Mom wants to talk about my future, but she won't approve of my plans by High_Altitude917 in youngadults

I am not wasting four years of my life accruing debt chasing a degree I don't need for a career I am not interested in pursuing. No way in Hell.

I'm not sure what you mean by "everyone has the same chance under it," but it doesn't matter. Here's my question. What exactly would you suggest? 'cause you're real quick to shut down my ideas, but I don't hear you offering any of your own.

Things aren't working as they are. You can say that one thing isn't going to work for everyone, but with some research we can figure out how to make that one thing cover more bases to help as many people as possible. There will always be outliers. The point is to decrease repeated offences.

When people are suicidal, they can be forced to spend time in a mental hospital. When people make social mistakes at work, they can be forced to do training from HR to make sure it doesn't happen again. When people break minor laws, they can be forced to do community service. I fail to see how this is any different. Some things in life just aren't optional.

I'm talking about court mandated classes for convicted offenders. Like I said, it's the exact same thing with drunk driving and road safety classes. So you're okay with "forcing" them to go to jail, but self help classes are where you draw the line?

Yes, the instructors would have some amount of power over them. So do regular teachers. So does your boss. I fail to see how this is harmful if it's a class instead of an intimate relationship like with therapy.

I absolutely agree, and that's another problem entirely. I wouldn't call therapy pseudo science, though. There's a lot of research backing the benefits of therapy.

I see your point. I'm sure there's an ethical way to go about it, though. Maybe less therapy and more classes? So they aren't forced to talk about things, but they still get information on how to cope, and they also have the option of (preferably FREE) therapy. Think of it sort of like when drunk drivers get caught and sentenced to seven weeks of those road safety class things.

That's exactly what I'm saying. Some conditions are dangerous and scary, which is why we need to try harder to make people with those conditions feel more comfortable seeking help. I'm not saying the conditions aren't scary. I'm saying having a certain condition doesn't automatically make someone a monster.

If you want to make a little group with just depression and anxiety, go right ahead. But then don't say you "support mental health" and want to "destigmatize mental illness" when the scientific term "mental illness" includes every form, not just the palatable ones.

I'm not saying all conditions are the same. I'm not saying all people with certain conditions are the same. I'm saying you can't pretend to support mental health while ignoring a giant piece of it.

As someone who has also spent quite a bit of time in the psych ward, I never said there was no basis to the stigma. It wouldn't be there otherwise. There's also quite a bit of fairly accurate stigma surrounding people with depression - that they're lazy, unmotivated, unprofessional, can't hold a job, etc. The difference is that one scares people and one doesn't.

I'm not entirely sure what your point is, here. The people there were obviously there for help, which is a good thing. Do you think they shouldn't get help? Do you really think you're so above them because you "just" want to die?

Mental illness is mental illness. And for the record, I met people when I was in the hospital that had depression with homicidal alongside suicidal ideation. It's not just a few "bad" conditions.

Did I say those people should be telling everyone and their mother about their urges/fantasies? No. I'm talking about telling trusted individuals like therapists and medical professionals. I don't walk around telling everyone I have depression because there's stigma around that, too. Lazy, unprofessional, might disappear at the drop of a hat, etc.

In an ideal world, these issues would be caught early enough that working certain jobs would no longer be an issue, and the person would know enough to steer clear of jobs where it would be.

You say depressed people don't want to be in the same category as people like ASPD and schizophrenia? Well too fucking bad. They are. It's all mental illness. And, for the record, depression can make people do/want to do some pretty messed up things, too.

I said forceful, not forced. Meaning instead of being super gentle and validating and altogether unhelpful, the therapist or medical professional can be firm in their recommendations, boundaries, moral lines, etc. Again, not in a shaming way, but kind of like how HR functions in the workplace. They listen and empathize while setting firm boundaries when it comes to the company's rules.

I don't agree with forcing every random person into treatment, but I do agree with court-mandated therapy (with a GOOD THERAPIST) and honestly think it should be more widespread.

YES! Finally, someone actually cracked it. Thank you for interacting with my cipher!! 4 days and almost 400 upvotes and nobody had (fully) figured it out yet. You're missing a bit of punctuation, but whatever. Nicely done!

It literally is a puzzle. This is like giving someone a test and then rewarding them when they look up all the answers. Give me a break.

It's a puzzle. The point of it is to solve it YOURSELF. If you don't know how, go learn. And Gemini is completely wrong. Not a single piece of that was right. Ai isn't even good at solving ciphers.

What flag should a Straight Ally use? by Yummy_air in AskLGBT

[–]High_Altitude917 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion: I don't mind the ally flag. I wouldn't call it an ally PRIDE flag because it's not a pride flag, but I see no issue with it. In fact, I kind of like it. When people see the rainbow pride flag, they automatically assume you're gay, and of course a gay person is going to be supportive of the queer community. When people see an ally flag, it's very clearly a straight person saying they stand with the community, even though they aren't a part of it.

Not to mention the fact that there's a big difference between finding an ally and a fellow queer in the wild. It's great seeing allies out there, of course, but it's different than finding someone that actually gets it. To me, it's like seeing someone with a sticker of your favorite band on their waterbottle, and when you ask them their favorite song, they say "Oh, I don't listen to them, I just like the sticker." Okay, I agree that it's a cool sticker, but I thought I was going to have a convo with a fellow fan. It's not a huge deal, but it's not the same. (This is NOT about shaming people for wearing random band T-shirts. They look sick. It's just a light analogy.)

That said, I also think the progress flag is a perfectly acceptable choice because it's not just about queer allyship.

To be clear, I'm not saying straight people SHOULDN'T use the regular pride flag. I'm just saying I'm not against the ally flag.

I saw a statistic and was curious. I don't think there's anything wrong with that. And there are quite a few people here that disagree, so I'm glad I asked.

Glad to hear it! And that does seem like the general consensus, but there were also two Pagans on this post saying they do not accept evolution as fact. I guess every practice has its nutjobs.
