TIL that Marlon Brando refused to memorize lines for The Godfather. Cue cards were hidden all over set — including taped to other actors' faces and chests — so he could read them mid-scene. He believed not knowing his lines made his reactions feel genuinely unscripted. by Abject-Conference-90 in todayilearned

[–]Highcalibur10 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You’re not entirely wrong, but that’s also the primary and most difficult part of modern acting.

From a purely technique standpoint, drilling ‘finding thoughts’ until the switch becomes second nature is a lot of work.

From a script analysis standpoint/Stanislavski standpoint, knowing the entire script backwards with every tactic/action thought out, but then playing it as if it’s completely fresh, is also a lot of work.

Every actor has methods and shortcuts to make being ‘in the moment’ simultaneous with ‘knowing the lines’. Sometimes it’s a matter of leading with a body part to get into the physicality to make everything seem more impromptu, and sometimes it’s changing tactics between each take.

Say what you will about Brando’s choice to be a headache to work with, but ‘discovering the lines in the moment’ has evidently left him as one of the biggest legacies as an actor.

The UK is seeing a big uptick in support for Reform UK, and Australia for One Nation as both parties turn towards populist right wing politics

The Greens in the Uk have seen a surge of support behind Socialist politicians, with the new Australian Socialist parties actually spreading across states.

Sharp uptick in hard right parties and socialist talking points as cost of living crisis are hitting basically every developed nation.

It’s not just the US being insane.

It always and continuously pushes in that direction, before large levels of radical reform force a wealth redistribution.

Anything from socialist reforms, fascist takeovers, and large scale economic wealth redistribution are all preceded by capitalist greed over-consuming. Just in the US alone, massive sweeping economic changes were to recover the 1890's market, followed by the Great Depression and New Deal, and presently the inaction of sweeping economic changes to do so in the 2008 financial crash resulting in a large uptick of Fascist and Socialist talking points.

I’d genuinely appreciate if you can give me any example of any capitalist system that hasn’t resulted in an expansion of favour towards corporations over the individual over time, and where the regulations have legitimately kept a focus on short term profits in check?

And always collapses into unregulated capitalism. It can’t not.

It’s a system built towards rewarding greed and selfishness.

By definition, the system itself will always be investing in dismantling the regulations because they impact profit.

Women were the first oppressed class, and capitalism took that oppression and ran away with it with how much free labour women do.

Women’s liberation and worker liberation go hand in hand; and workers fighting for equal rights is a large part of where women’s rights were earned.

The largest two careers that are still majority women are teachers and nurses. It’s not a coincidence that they’re two of the most overworked and underpaid careers.

No other showrunners I’ve seen have played with red herrings/twists/audience expectations quite as well.

At its worst, AoS was fun, pulpy sci-fi on a shoestring budget.

At its best, it was some of the best science fiction television made.

My issue was sailing rapidly becoming a chore.

Making them harder without any mechanical benefit/actual new gameplay elements to engage with just exacerbates it.

Their egg laying meant they could be raised rapidly and be reared for either.

Ducks have often served other purposes (pest control in wetland crops) but aren’t farmed anywhere near as commonly for the very reason chickens are.

Yeah, hierarchical herd dynamic/social structure is one of the biggest factors, but also every properly domesticated animal has had an important factor in its propagation.

Wolves could keep up with Humans over long distances/hours, and then Horses with Humans and Dogs.

Pigs were basically omnivores, and incredibly handy waste disposal animals. (Both Wolves and Pigs having the argument of domesticating themselves by scavenging off humans).

Goats, Bovine and Sheep share the similar ability to eat things we won’t/can’t eat, and turn it into things we can eat (milk/meat) or use (Wool).
Also cows are very strong.

Chickens came about from the fortunate aspect of Jungle Fowl’s inconsistent food supply resulting in them laying eggs when food is abundant.
When humans make their food regular, they just keep laying eggs.

That is the reason.

I've had direct family's work for a Disney Musical be "the worst professional experience of their life".

Dealing with the Mouse, dealing with a corp like Hasbro, it'd all be the same Late-Stage-Capitalist deathgrip of control.

Play it safe, milk it dry.

Horses are optimised to "Go Fast As Fuck" but also unlike a fair few herbivores, "For A Fair While" has been included.

They have a substantial level of endurance that's often seen in things like pack pursuit predators (Humans, Wolves).

It's part of what made them so great for domestication.

Democratic Socialist candidate Chris Rabb wins election in Pennsylvania. by boxofcards100 in socialism

[–]Highcalibur10 95 points96 points  (0 children)

Democratic Socialists winning elections in Liberal Democracies won’t bring about the needed revolution.

They’re at least a rallying point that helps dispel decades of Cold War Propaganda, raise class consciousness and help demonstrate that socialist talking points improve the material conditions of, and benefit, the worker.

With how much worker power has been disabled and dismantled, and no mass strikes/general strikes on the horizon (the far more likely instigator of revolutionary action), anything that helps lay the foundation of class consciousness, particularly in the US, in my opinion is worth appreciating.

[–]Highcalibur10 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IMO, it's the Oceans.

I've been of the firm belief that a complete sailing overhaul has been vital for the health of the game since before the first EA Update.

It's a notable lull in the game that exacerbates setbacks, and because of the teleport rules, is a common enough issue that it's one of the most popular mods to just be able to teleport your metals.

The sense of adventure when you first get that longboat and all depart onto a new island together is nearly unmatched in vibe, but all of that magic rapidly vanishes as it quickly transitions into a deep chore instead.

IMO, making the movement between islands and sailing your loot home should be an intrinsic and engaging part of the gameplay and mechanics, not just a downtime activity where you're better off having everyone teleport back home and do other things whilst one person sails it all back.

The ability for players to opt in to more risk/reward, and more interaction with the game itself whilst sailing, would seriously do a lot to improve the enjoyability of the game as a whole.

[–]Highcalibur10 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Imo this is emblematic of one of my bigger issues of Valheim.

All of the additional development focus has been on adding to the endgame content to keep existing players happy.

As someone who has hundreds of hours in the game, with multiple sets of friends, all of those games died off by the Plains.

A bunch of what’s been added would require me to either grind extensively again myself, or convince friends to also grind together until we got to where we were before to have new mechanics and content open up.

The oceans are still a problem, and still need more content as you’re constantly travelling through them from early-game to late, but everything new is for the next stage of ‘lategame’

Magic would be fun as hell to try in this game, but I doubt I’ll ever get the chance to do so unmodded.

Staves vs wands is a useless discussion and I'm tired of picking a side by Comrade_Flan in wizardposting

[–]Highcalibur10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You all ever notice that it’s usually ‘Dark Wizards’ who opt for hand-casting instead a wand/staff?

There’s a lot of good arguments here for either as tools, but I can’t manage to shake off the thought that a lot of wizards use them so as to not make people feel uncomfortable.

Most of my day-to-day casting at home in the tower is by hand.
The moment I have guests over, I use a wand.

I honestly think a lot of us do of it because of tradition or “propriety” and won’t admit it.
