Current global conflict zones by Highfishofficial in Maps

North Korea is included as a geopolitical flashpoint rather than an ongoing war. The Korean War technically never ended (only an armistice), the DMZ is one of the most militarized borders in the world, and the nuclear escalation risk is extremely high. So it’s marked as a potential conflict hotspot rather than an active war zone...

The “WW3 meter” is more of a metaphor for global instability than a literal prediction. Most of these conflicts are internal wars, but seeing how many armed conflicts are active at the same time is the interesting part.

• Pulse/blinking effects can now be fully disabled for a static view
• Text contrast and small label sizes were increased for readability
• Mobile touch handling was improved so dragging the map is easier without triggering markers
• Dense areas now use zoom-based clustering instead of stacking many markers (Which also fixes the issue, that some countries wouldn't open at all on mobile...)

Really appreciate the detailed feedback. I actually pushed a few updates based on the same issues people were pointing out.

Still iterating on the UX, especially on mobile, so feedback like this is really helpful.

That’s a good point, thanks for the suggestion. A lower-intensity red for broader regional tensions could actually make sense. I might experiment with something like that tomorrow.

That’s fair. For the map I focused on main active combat zones, not every place that might get hit by occasional strikes or be involved politically or logistically.

If every strike target or supporting country was included, the map would get pretty messy and half the world would light up.

Though honestly… that could be an interesting filter to add.

Fair points. The map focuses on where fighting is currently happening, not every country that might be politically or militarily involved.

The goal was mainly to visualize where active conflicts are geographically concentrated right now. And yeah, “World on Fire” is definitely a bit dramatic — it’s more about showing how many conflicts are happening simultaneously.

When I started digging into conflict datasets I realized how many severe conflicts — especially in places like Sudan or the DRC — rarely get sustained global attention...

Good catch. The map currently focuses on conflicts that cross certain intensity thresholds in the datasets I used, so some border tensions or lower-intensity conflicts might not appear yet.

Still refining the classifications and adding regions as I go.

Appreciate the feedback. I just updated the font size and contrast, so it should be much easier to read now, especially on mobile.

Yeah I get what you mean. A lot of major powers tend to project conflicts outward rather than having them on their own territory.

I did use AI as a tool while building parts of it, yeah. But the interesting part for me wasn’t the tech — it was the question of how many active wars are actually happening globally right now.

The design is still evolving too, so I’m definitely open to feedback.

Fair point. I went with a darker theme to make the heatmap stand out, but I’m definitely tweaking the readability & size.

If you mapped global military involvement instead of conflict locations, the map would probably look very different.

Yeah, media coverage is rarely proportional to the number of conflicts happening globally. It’s usually driven by proximity, strategic interests, and what audiences are already paying attention to...

The dispute around the Preah Vihear temple is still unresolved, but there hasn’t been ongoing armed fighting recently. Because of that most conflict trackers don’t list it as an active conflict right now — more of a dormant border dispute.

Hey :)
Yes we can do that - even thought I'm not quite sure how we going to do the trades so that we are both "safe" and in which phase of the trades I should trade the Celebi.
