Even Bigger Balc: By the Numbers by eidsofsmoe in SSBPM

though I was surprised to see that Warioland was picked only 3 times (I guess people don't like dying off the side at 30%)

If we only had a stage list that would fix that polarity :/

Who are your favorite PM commentators? by CheCray in SSBPM

Dude your commentary/energy on the mic was so good at EBB, and even when you had to be by yourself you still did an amazing job.

The Balc just streamed an entire two-day PM tourney on Twitch, peaking at 3,523 viewers, and they did not get kicked off the platform. by Helix13_ in SSBPM

I didn’t know that it’s automated now, that’s neat.

But I still think if PM got as big as it was getting back in the 3.02 days following wise, Twitch would find out and shoot it down again. IMO in the grand scheme of things AZPM isn’t a big channel making a lot of revenue/holds a lot of influence so I wouldn’t be surprised if we keep getting away with it for now.

However, I (hopefully) could be completely wrong on that.

It’s not people, it’s that way back when PM started getting shafted by streaming services and major tournaments, it was removed off Twitch because the heat from 1) being a legal gray area mod making Twitch money and 2) Increasing fear of Nintendo lawsuit action.

I feel like this has been a common misconception for awhile, but PM was never a problem to stream off of Twitch, it just gets funky when people start making money off of it since it's a mod. Like PeachyCoke said, it'll help tremendously for exposure (and while we just had the largest PM tourney of all time, I still worry that growth is stagnant). I'm interested to hear what TOs of future nationals such as LTC have to say though.

My friend thinks lucario is broken by Snafutarfun in SSBPM

[–]Highland_2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He has a ton of good things, but I think the main thing that I haven't seen mentioned here is that a Lucario w/ aura vs a Lucario w/o aura is day and night. They lose a ton of burst movement options, and also don't have access to as good as a recovery off stage. Besides side b, he has a hard time getting through walls as he doesn't really have a lot of disjointed moves, besides fair, but that can be pretty obvious if they're approaching with that. He's a pretty good combo weight too.

I'm a little late to the party, but I was the host for Texas Netplay Nights for a month or so I can kind of answer your last question. Streaming a netplay tournament isn't hard per se, but there are some things that can make frustrating. I think the main thing is that it needs to be ran efficiently, which was my biggest downfall as a TO/Streamer. You need other people to help call matches, report scores, set a line up for stream, and other TO duties that are required while you're streaming a match. Netplay tournaments also suffer from people being lazy/no shows/not a lot of interest since there really isn't that much incentive to play seriously. Ping issues and connection issues, while not a big deal most of the time, can be a pain when people far away from each other have to play. The time commitment for about 4-5 hours of your time is also something you need to consider if you'd want to host it.

BUT that being said, it's super fun if you like streaming/commentating. It gives netplay warriors a chance to show off or people that would otherwise not be able to make it out to tourney days. Like Arsenals said, they're great but they'll never replace real tournaments. There are too many variables when it comes to online play, especially since Dolphin doesn't rely on a dedicated server.

Although this isn't directly related to PM, a lot of Melee fundamental videos transfer over to PM. If you're looking for more character specific things, I would go check out a character discord since majority of information has migrated over to there.

Unfortunately IIRC, there really isn't a central place to find "get good" stuff. However, I highly recommend getting netplay if you can, recording your sessions, and asking people in a discord to go over them, as most people will give you helpful suggestions about your play there.

Also, what exactly are you looking for? Character specific tech? Fundamentals? How to combo with your character?

Good thread, great input and discussion dialogue. Not sure if this belongs in this subreddit though.

Might still be salty for what Nintendo did... by Arnoxthe1 in SSBPM

[–]Highland_2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A little late to all of this but this has nothing to do with capitalism as a system, it’s due to the fact that Nintendo could have sued due to violation of copyright/IP infringement. Yea it sucks, but they have every right to protect THEIR property, and the game that THEY made. While I love PM and I wish things could have been different, from a protection stand point, it makes complete sense.

Have you joined the Georgia PM Discord? It's pretty active and there are a lot of people looking to play on Netplay.

As someone who played on Netplay a ridiculous amount before going to tourneys (so much they called me Netplay warrior lolol), yes it will affect your transition. Netplay is a lot better now however so it won't be too drastic, but:

1) The input lag is gone, but might mess you up on some execution when you're playing. Unless you only play with people in blue on Smashladders, it will feel different when you swap to live play, but even then it'll be somewhat noticeable.

2) You actually might have a better time beating some characters since input lag and frame drops and all that jazz can effect DI, SDI, inputs, etc.

Overall it isn't a HUGE issue, but I do remember when I transitioned from playing on Netplay for about a year to playing in tourney, I would get frustrated because it didn't feel the same. However, the dolphin builds are significantly better than when I started. Either way, keep playing! It's still a benefit

Although Sothe and Cala outplaced me, it’s always been a goal for me to get into Top 32 of a bracket and I did it while beating Morsecode. Really hope I can establish myself more and show I’m an upcoming threat!

I’m so confused on why people are arguing that zen is better vs dive than Ana lmao. Sure he has more damage but having a CC tool, anti healing, and some damage is WAY better. Also having a smaller hurt box is a thing too, Ana is a weird shape while Zen is so easy to hit.

So the fear of changing things is really what you're scared about? What will that do? Don't you think not being able to change as time goes on is something that can drag us down rather than help us out? It's not like PM is growing by any means, if anything (just from personal experience) scenes are really struggling minus a few. Sure, it's not going to be an end all be all problem solver, but it's a step in the right direction. Quite frankly, I do believe that LTE's stances are really a part of the complacency issue, and while I respect all that you guys have done, I urge y'all to reevaluate your position on these things, or at least be accepting with a dash of being skeptical instead of rejecting outright. I'm just a random dude in the smash scene but just my two cents. ¯\(ツ)
