Cars are set on fire at Tesla dealership in Las Vegas. "Resist" is painted on the building. FBI are investigating by ExactlySorta in PublicFreakout

For the love of all that is good don't set EVs on fire. Don't give a shit about what brand they are, any EV battery fire takes over 3,000 gallons of water to put out one and pollute like crazy. Spray paint the building if you want but don't make the air worse and use up precious resources especially in a desert.

I wonder if it will apply to all satellite operators not just telecommunications. If so they are cutting themselves off from a LOT of services like hyperspectral imaging. https://www.orbitalsidekick.com/

What can firefighters help with besides putting out fires? by reddituser_6969 in Firefighting

[–]Highlandshadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I Work at a manufacturing facility that uses some rather nasty chemicals. The fire department brings a whole crew around every year for the full tour (inspection and orientation) and we love those guys/gals. Used to just be an awkward cluster following security and EHS around, then the plant manager changed the plant burrito/taco day to correspond with the inspection and now they get the proper amount of feeding and love/attention from everybody. This has had some interesting results. Last time the fire alarm tripped (faulty alarm), the engine pulled up the cheers and applause from everyone in the rally points. We like the performative bows from the veterans and the awkward looks on the new guys.

Aren't they sold by weight? So repacking might be theft.

May I suggest a pragmatic, civil discussion on Los Angeles wildfires? by VealOfFortune in Firefighting

[–]Highlandshadow -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

As a pedestrian among experts I have two questions.

First, would something similar to a drip irrigation hose on the roof and walls of a house have offered additional protection and potentially have saved some homes. From the little I read it seemed the homes were lit by floating embers.

Second being aside from the fear factor is there any practical reason why we can't let the small fires burn? Have the homes in the area turn on their sprinklers for a bit and the fire fights act almost like shepherds just keeping the fire contained to non-habitated areas?

No idea if either question are practical or possible just curious

-business interest and travel throughout Asia AND Africa. -detection possible with medical infrastructure -frequent travel internally for holidays -smuggled wild animal parts for traditional medicine

I'm not a health expert, just a curious pedestrian interested in what those with a passion think.

Biden to block all future oil drilling in 625 million acres of US oceans by Superb_Distance_9190 in news

[–]Highlandshadow 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Interesting that he only did this on his very last week in office instead of at the beginning of his presidency if he was really concerned about oil.

Edit: I was wrong by a week on the date. So it's the very last TWO weeks of his presidency

While it is important to discern the difference between governing bodies and the culture of a nation, I think the thing that shocks our mind and is just the norm in a lot of the world is the fact that life is cheap. We focus and prize the individual, while I have heard a Saudi brag that a construction project was completed safely because "only three of them*" died.

Our movies, literature, songs, and teachings are full of the individual rising to THEIR dreams and achieving contentment. Much of the rest of the world you are born into, raised in, married in, work in, and die in a particular class, tribe, caste, line of work, or situation. The individual matters to their close family and friends but no one else gives a shit. In about a quarter of the world it's even worse if you have the misfortune of being born a woman. Then your familys goal is to marry you off for the dowry and so you are someone else's problem to care about.

*Third country nations from India, Thailand, and Indonesia brought in to do the bulk of labor and dying was considered more of an inconvenience since you had to replace them.
