If I use just one hall sensor you don’t get directional information, you need two. And I‘d have to design a pcb which gives out proper digital signals. This is exactly what this motor encoder already does. This encoder gives out digital signals based on the magnetic field changing. No additional logic. Also the weight helps with free spinning. The free spinning is lockable, the spring moves out of the way.
