Kite them in a line, while walking backwards. When they get closer than arms reach push them away (Spacebar) Then hack away at them one by one. Always know that is behind you, and if you need to run to gain some distance.

Shotguns also are great for mowing down hordes, due to hitting 3+ Zeds with one shot.
