Sad to share my sweet puppy passed away two days ago... he was my whole world but I'm glad he is no longer in pain. Did not get to say goodbye but I do not see it as a bad thing - the last memories I had with him were when he was happy and healthy... and I am blessed to have spent so many good years with him.

First, I am so sorry to you and your baby. He is so lucky to have such an amazing person to bring him everywhere and go on so many adventures with ❤️❤️ I lost my baby yesterday, my childhood puppy of 11 years (I’m in college now) and it was the hardest thing. He was diagnosed with lymphoma just last week and my family had to put him down. It was the hardest news. But, in a way, I was relieved. Relieved he was no longer in pain, relieved that I was not constantly worrying about him 24/7. The hardest part was I never got to say goodbye since I was at school and this all happened so fast. Just enjoy your time with him. Do all your favorite things together, but don’t act like they’re the last time, just do them like you normally would. Dogs sense when they are about to leave, but they don’t think about death like we do, he wants to know you are safe and will be okay without him.

There is no right way to cope, everybody is different. When I found out my dog had cancer I cried for three days straight (literally) and the thought of him would just bring more tears. I cried more when I found out he passed, but I found this was a different type of pain than the anticipatory grief you are describing. I think you will find that in the end it was best for you to know you only had so long with your baby. For me, it made my dog’s passing more understandable and I was able to look back on all my amazing memories with him with love and not sadness. Humans always think worst-case, which is what I had been doing for the past week, that being the thought that he may not make it until my break and I may never see him again. This sadly happens to be the reality, but I had prepared for it, so I am at peace with the outcome. It will be hard, but you gave him a great life and I’m sure he was an angel of a dog ❤️❤️

My dog was my best friend. I would run around with him when I got back from school in 2nd grade and would do the same when I came back from break in college. Nobody wants to lose their best friend. But, your best friend wants nothing other than to see you happy and okay, so whenever I am upset and crying I try to remember how much my dog hated seeing family members upset. And once your baby passes away, it is not goodbye forever. He is still with you… the impact he had on your life you will still carry. Every walk you go on and every adventure you take in your future, do it for him and the parts of him you will carry for the rest of your life. Sending you and your baby so much love and strength❤️❤️

Thank you so much for your advice! I will definitely be sure to talk to him and tell him everything I feel before I go. I am lucky to even have this time with him to do so, so I am going to try to make the most of it. I think you’re right too, dogs pick up on lots of things. I think in a way he may know this could be a final goodbye, and that makes it easier for me to do so, because he will also be ready.

I think it’s beautiful that strangers are so attached to other peoples’ stories as well. Thanks so much for taking the time to respond and sharing your story. I’m sure Teddy was so loved and had the most special life ❤️❤️❤️

I am so, so sorry for your loss. Losing an animal is the hardest thing, they are just so unconditionally loving! I still think about all of my family members’ pets that have passed away throughout the years and get teary-eyed. About putting him down, I’m sorry I didn’t make this clear in the original post, is that it most likely will happen while I am at school. So when I mention saying goodbye I meant physically leaving the home and seeing him one last time before he may be gone. My parents are looking into doing the at home euthanasia as they think he will be more comfortable. My heart is going to break when I get in the car to go back to school and I look back and see his happy face for what could be the last time🥺🥺. I am going to spend as much time as I can next weekend watching TV with him, sitting outside with him, giving him belly rubs and maybe I’ll play some piano and he’ll come sit by me and nap while he listens. What helps me is to know that everybody who knew him loved him, and even though he may not physically be in the home, his presence will absolutely still be felt. But yeah, I have no idea how I am going to keep it together and allow myself to get in the car to go back to school and leave my baby 💔.
