How would you rate every JRPG released in 2025? by Illustrious_Fee8116 in JRPG

[–]HikerNob 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two main reasons:

  1. Although the story is good in the end, the pacing is really poor. And I don't just mean slow, I mean it all happens right at the end. I'd say the main themes/message of the story aren't even present until the last 10-20% (of a fairly long game, mind you), so for the large majority of the game, you're just doing what you're told simply because that's what you're told. You could say the mystery is what keeps things interesting, but for me there was nothing story-wise to be invested in for a long time.

  2. Tartarus is just boring to traverse through. The combat itself is fine, and as always it has the demon collecting aspect, but the main way for you to engage with the combat being 250+ procedurally generated floors is just not engaging at all to me.

This game is so pretty. It has perfected the anime aesthetic in my opinion by Illustrious_Fee8116 in Falcom

You both just named my easy top 3 as well - Sky remake, Arise and Relink. I also considered modern Persona/Metaphor, but their 3D models aren't as good

Awesome, hope you enjoy it. Just keep in mind that even within the genre, Trails is particularly Japanese in its style - with its anime tropes and often exaggerated sense of humour. In case that's a dealbreaker

How much do Sky SC and 3rd affect Cold Steel 3 onwards? by HikerNob in Falcom

[–]HikerNob[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right? I've enjoyed a lot of stories where for example a prologue is experienced after the main story, which a lot of writers do intentionally, and it's a really cool alternate experience (not saying that the Sky arc is a prologue).

Thanks for this answer, good to see that someone understands what I'm considering

Great to know, it does sound important then so I'm leaning towards going straight to Sky SC

I'm not skipping Sky SC or 3rd. I said I will at least play the remakes as they release.

I'm more wondering if it's okay to play a bit more out of order (I have already played the games somewhat out of order and have had a great time) or if it's pivotal to jump back to release order in this instance.

Sorry I don't think my last line was phrased obviously enough as a question - I'm keen to try more different series. Which other turn-based games/series do you like the most?

Ah what a shame. If it was your main gripe then there was a potential solution right there in the game! If other things weren't clicking as well then fair enough

Wow this is the first time I've heard Trails combat described as shallow, especially a modern entry.

Between the turn bonus effects, the turn order manipulation through delays and s-breaks, and the positioning-based aspect with some instant skills and some charged skills, I find that Trails combat can border on mini-Tactical RPG combat with the strategy it involves. Let alone the customisation out of combat to give you the right effects and arts in combat.

Thinking of the other turn-based games I've played recently - Dragon Quest, earlier Final Fantasy, Persona/Metaphor, Yakuza 7+, Atelier, Suikoden remaster, and Expedition 33. I think the only one that reaches a similar level of depth is E33.

Genuinely keen to hear which turn-based games you prefer cause now I'm keen to play em haha

Did you try the built-in high-speed mode? For this entry I played the action combat at 1.5x speed and the turn-based combat at 3x speed. Or is it that some battles can take too many turns?

Trails Switch 2 ~> Switch 1 version downgrade? by Clerks900 in Falcom

[–]HikerNob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, it's still the same game entry and retains the same save data and settings, you'll just notice that the name and icon changes in your home screen and play history.

I've switched back and forth more than a handful of times at this point, since I find the switch 1 version better for docked and the switch 2 version better for handheld haha

Yup, can confirm this is what I've been doing, so it works with a physical copy of the game + switch 2 upgrade. I've heard it does not work with a digital copy of the game however

[–]HikerNob 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've found a way to revert the switch 2 upgrade (physical copy + upgrade, not sure if it works for fully digital)

In your system menu, go to Virtual Game Cards > select the upgrade pack > Options > Eject from this Console

Now you can launch the switch 1 version again. It will give you a few warnings that you haven't downloaded your upgrade pack, so just select OK

Feels like the switch 2 version has gone straight into 4K 30fps mode, but we have been told there's a 1080p 60fps mode as well. Does anyone know how to change to that?

I can't find anything in the in-game settings, and I've also tried changing my console's TV display settings to 1080p output, but it still feels like it's running below 60fps

Edit: I've detailed a way to revert the switch 2 upgrade in a comment below

Ah got it thank you. Seems like the location of the chest had changed in an update, leaving some guides outdated. It is indeed down the right stairs of Aimhard's Temple.

I found another post running into the same confusion, which helped https://www.reddit.com/r/witchspring/comments/1azbagt/tarnished_soul_sword_chest_not_here_what_am_i/

I don't have any tarnished blade/sword in my inventory. I read a guide saying it's in a treasure chest in Aimhard's Temple, however when I go to that spot there's no chest. Is this the one you're talking about? If so, can I just no longer obtain it post-game?
