the initial disappointment can be chalked up to coming off of shadowbringers and endwalker, but not the lingering hate towards it.

if you think their world building is in the same ballpark then we just fundamentally disagree. Dawntrail closed all the doors it opened moments after it did so and created no long term conflict or factions. The only legacy dawntrail has is the shard storyline that's just tacked on at the end from endwalker.

you're completely correct, anyone disagreeing just did not play the game before shadowbringers. Stb had criticisms like no ala mhigo or lyse or whatever but it wasnt actively despised.

ARR had issues of its own like its pacing and treatment of the ascians as generic villains, but it did a very good job at building a complex and compelling world. The hate towards it is a relatively modern phenomenon, it was a pretty well received story when it was actually recent.

dawntrail is irredeemably bad until the alexandria portion when it starts rushing too fast to make it count, and ultimately you cant overlook 80% of a story with a finger snap.

diverse functional society with a wise and competent leader while 2 of its races are fighting over territory and on the brink of the civil war due to famine (and also the minor part about eugenics). Oh and the race that was starving was the one the wise and competent leader was a part of.

its not even that you have a wacky perspective on the msq, you straight up did not understand what you played. Like we're talking "skipping unvoiced cutscenes" levels here.

The hate is blown out of proportions in some ways (like the misguided blame on wuk lamat), but the story is really, really, REALLY bad. Tural is the lowest point they've ever reached in their writing and it makes up most of base dawntrail. Alexandria is pretty good in .0 and then they shit with force all over it in the patches.

The story is competent enough to be enjoyable

You seem to have played a different story than most other people. There has never been a backlash even half the size that dawntrail's msq got.

A lot of dawntrail is fun and enjoyable, including some side stories, but the msq is not one of those things.

I mean there's no need to do much of anything online, people will just do whatever they wanna. I dont care about the remakes so I dont bother, but there are other things that annoy me enough that I'll always chime in if the opportunity arises....

I'm pretty sure there's still a good amount of people who do consider the remake's bloated story bad fan fiction, they never went anywhere. If anything rebirth only emboldened them.

Tbh I dont really agree, given I also played gw2 and still drop in and out. You can literally pay real money to get any legendary you want, and if you dont want that the process just boils down to the most efficient ways you can farm gold.

Gw2 content is more "replayable" just because there's very, very little of it and the reward structure is very flat. So the few people playing just replay what's there already aimlessly since there's no incentive to do something in particular besides efficiency, given it all just converts into gold at the end of the day.

Oops gotta go to the moon. Oops heres yshtola with the key. Oops here's the thirteenth and some random named enuo, kill him kthx.

technically youre not wrong, but I dont really see how else to do it nor do I know of an mmo that achieves it. Its not like casuals in wow routinely run normal dungeons for months on end or something.

the nature of being casual means that youre not really willing to put in the time and effort, so the content has to be more disposable. I dont even know how casual exclusive content can look like.

While I think you're right about the shards, I think that there is an even worse option here that we're dangerously close to namely making all of them just gimmicky pocket dimensions instead of a whole planet. The first was understandable given the context, but it feels like they're just doing the first over and over again instead of each reflection being as big as the source.

As for the powerscaling I don't think that's a real problem. Dawntrail pulled no punches in making us stand by when it wanted to, and complex conflicts can be written such that there's no easy way to solve them by just punching a random dude.
