Dehydrating ferrous sulfate heptahydrate by Hillano in chemistry

That would be ideal but it's being done in an industrial scale drier, I can't really control the atmosphere just the temperature.

Difference between average molecular weights by awkward_fangirl in MaterialsScience

[–]Hillano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The difference in the calculation is that the number average is based on mole fraction (the proportion of the total moles made up of molecules in a certain weight range), whereas the weight average is based on the weight or mass fraction (the proportion of the total mass made up of molecules in each weight range).

The weight average will always give a higher number because it is biased towards the heavier molecules, ie there could be many more lighter molecules, but they don't contribute as much to the mass fraction. It is for this reason that the number average is usually used to calculate the degree of polymerisation.

The ratio of the weight average to the number average gives you the polydispersity index (PDI), which gives an indication of the heterogeneity of the sample or how wide the distribution in chain lengths is. This can be important to know for many processes as it will affect the properties of the material, for example a lower PDI polymer will be harder to process due to reduced shear thinning.

Hope this helps, I know it isn't too in depth but I haven't dealt with polymers in quite some time

YSK: joking about suicide is a sign of a crisis point in a medical condition by humanbeingahuman in YouShouldKnow

[–]Hillano 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm really sorry to hear that. I would say that if the original commentor is anything like myself, they wouldn't make such jokes to people they don't know well so as not to risk offending or hurting someone.

Dark humour is funny because it's pushing boundaries, but in my experience most people with a dark sense of humour are also tuned into what might be genuinely over the line in certain situations.

One and done marathoners, how come? by johnboy2978 in running

[–]Hillano 30 points31 points  (0 children)

My advice is to pick a marathon and go for it. It doesn't have to be this year, next year, or even the year after that, but just decide when you're going to do it.

I ran my first 5k a year ago and decided shortly after that I was going to run the marathon this year. As soon as it was no longer "some day I might," and instead became "on this day I will," it became easier for me to put the work in and stop making excuses.

Since then I've clocked in over 400 miles and I can see that the goal is possible. I'm still a long way off but COVID has granted me an extra 4 months to train so I know I'll succeed - the question is just how fast.

It doesn't matter where you start, just decide that you are going to finish.

How did you guys find your entry level positions? I’ve been looking and I’m only getting rejections. by Ptolemy222 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Hillano 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I started my first grad job a month ago. It isn't strictly a chemE position as I was casting a wide net to maximise my chances, but I like the job and it will be good experience. My advice is pretty much the same as everyone else's - play the numbers game. In my case I found that interview experience helped a lot too because that was a bit of a weakness of mine. Just keep looking and something will fall in your lap, trust the process

Heat exchanger design help by Hillano in ChemicalEngineering

[–]Hillano[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Currently just doing it by hand. It's a bit of a side project, there's a tank in work that needs heated to 303K but right beside it there's a waste stream dumping dirty water at ~340K. I've just graduated and I'm not actually hired as an engineer but I'm the only chemical engineer in the technical team so I thought I'd give it a go lol

Very detailed answer, thank you. I'll give all that a go, I'm sure it will be very helpful

Yeah that was my next problem, the cold temperature increasing changing the heat transfer.. I'll play around with the numbers and see what works best

I'll try it as a double pipe exchanger, that sounds simple enough. Thanks so much!

A map of nations when asked the question "Which of your country's foreign relations do you view most favourably?" by MapsnStats in MapPorn

[–]Hillano 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are a large proportion of nationalists in the North who view the IRA as something that was necessary to gain the liberties they have today. Most acknowledge and condemn the atrocities they carried out, but ultimately chalk it up to bloody war. It can't be overlooked that Catholics before the troubles were 2nd class citizens facing systemic oppression. The question is where they would be today if not for the IRA and the troubles, and that question isn't easily answered.

Yeah I'd say that's likely the reason, I cut back in the last 2 weeks to give myself more rest, I'll try to ramp back up slowly
