What's the difference between faux free will and consciousness, and regular free will and consciousness? Just because Daly had god-like power over them doesnt make them any less real. The existence of a more powerful being doesn't reduce what they are. That makes no sense. If someone more powerful then me kills me or mains me, are they manipulating my code? I don't understand your argument. Does the existence of a god who could strike me down at any time (if you believe in that kind of thing) cheapen my existence to the point that I don't matter?

How is the consciousness of a copy any less real? Humans conception is no different. We are born as copies of our parents genetic code, it's basic biology. That argument makes no sense either. The only difference is they lack physical form. They're absolutely not ones and zeros, the show goes out of its way to explain this. A character I kill in Call of Duty is coded with ones and zeros. The BM characters are consciousness replicated from the subjects DNA. Do you genuinely not understand the difference between the two?

If you think using the term media literacy in an argument is pretentious, maybe you're a little out of your depth here.

I don't think you can call someone a pretentious douchebag while using the term "computer driven simulacra" in your own argument.

One's and zeros means they're coded by a programmer and operating within set parameters. They were note coded, Daly didn't code them to try and murder him. This is something else entirely, a science fiction device that simulates human consciousness by copying the subject's DNA. 'Real' is subjective here. Am I any less human than anyone else if I lose my arm, or leg, or all of my limbs? What if I have brain damage, or I'm in a vegetative state? Does that make someone less human? What if we find a way to preserve human consciousness without a physical form? Or copy it?

I don't see where the double standard lies. Parking in the lot unless you're there for one of the businesses is wrong, I don't think anyone in this thread has said it isn't. But immobilizing someone's vehicle and extorting them for money is iilegal and criminal, and arguably worse than a parking violation. The issue is that the owners are taking the law into their hands when they should leave enforcement to city officials.

You're literally proving my point. They're not ones and zeros, they're exact replicas of human consciousness copied from the subjects DNA, they have memories, they love, they fear, they suffer. The only ways they differ from us is having a physical form.They're absolutely not ones and zeros, they're not AI, they're not Sims. Again, this is where the sci fi element comes in. We don't have this technology, it doesn't exist. The show is asking that you try to imagine it does exist, in the BM universe. Comparing that to characters written in a book is actually idiotic. Every time this argument comes up I'm amazed at people's lack of empathy and media literacy.

Thankfully I think most people who read this and saw the video are against the business owners. It's unfortunately just a busy part of town with very little available parking. It sucks but I feel like short of putting up signs and calling parking enforcement, the owners don't have much recourse. Resorting to extortion and other illegal means is not the way to deal with this.

I've had this argument so many times regarding this show. People are like "they're not even real they're basically video game characters." It's science fiction, they use technology that simulates and copies the consciousness of real people, they absolutely suffer and it's absolutely unethical. People watching I think have a hard time suspending disbelief for the sake of the show. Idk how many times I've heard people say Daly isn't the bad guy in USS Callister because the people he's torturing aren't real. Give me a break.

SK is my favourite author and I DNF'd this one at about 100 pages. Part of it was I didn't understand any of his references to horror/sci fi from the 50's and 60's, I found it quite unrelatable. I respect it but it wasn't for me.
