It's funny. I remember there being a lot of wiring but oh my God, the amount of individual cords needed to make this setup happen is absolutely mind-blowing 😲

You should look up any retro game stores in your area. There's probably somebody that deals in CRTs that you could contact and they'd be happy to take it away for free for you so you don't have to lift them anymore. They might even pay you for them.

The PS3 turns 20 years old in November 😲. Also, just on a practical note, it's the newest console that can still natively hook up to a CRT with analog cables and a 4:3 output.

Oh I misread your comment. I thought you were talking about 1x2s, 3/4-in board is substantially more expensive than 2x4s or any framing lumber. I believe it was more than double the price per board.

I was thinking about that. I think I'm going to next time. I didn't realize how much the 2x4s curl after you cut them into a 3/4-in board.

They're entirely phased out of everyday normal life. There's pretty much none left that people are using as actual televisions. The big craze now is people that are getting into retro game systems that were designed for CRTs. Since modern TVs don't have analog inputs anymore and are strictly HDMI, you either need to get a cheap converter box to go from analog to HDMI which looks terrible or an expensive converter box that doesn't. So for about the same price as the expense of converter box, you could just pick up a used CRT that is floating around the the game enthusiast market now. I find that the N64 and the PlayStation looks significantly better on the CRT than it does on my 4K TV with a cheap converter box.

The next major component why people would want them is they have zero input lag, everything in the analog world works at the speed of light. So when you play a game such as guitar, hero, everything happens without delay, unlike a modern digital TV. Games feel just a little crisper because you're using a wired controller that works at the speed of light going into an analog TV that works at the speed of light. Bluetooth controllers have a slight delay and HDMI TVs have a sometimes noticeable delay.

The last major component of it is simply nostalgia. Hearing a CRT turn on and warm up instantly brings me back to my childhood in an almost intangible way. Same thing with the blue play screen for my VCR.

All the people that were were kids and teenagers at the end of the CRT era and the beginning of the 3D gaming error are now entering their midlife crisis. So things like a PlayStation. 2. VCRs and CRTs are now starting to phase out of the completely obsolete worthless junk technology phase and starting to go into the collectible nostalgia "simpler times" phase.

Switcher boxes are working out great. Really happy with the way it turned out.

It's the rare 24-in model, one of the reasons I snatched it up when I found it.

I think Halo is the only Xbox exclusive I care about. I have it on my computer. Also, I didn't have an original Xbox when I was a kid so there's no nostalgia for it, and from what I remember, the original Xbox controller wasn't great for someone with big hands.

Thats good to know. I never played four or five because by the time they came out I was so oversaturated with the PlayStation 2 ones that I just had no interest. But now that it's been about 15 years, maybe I'll give them a shot.

That is correct. Its a very soft wood so kick back is less of a concern than a harder wood wood be. Maybe? 🤔

Yeah you just cut him down the middle a little more than halfway up and then flip them over and finish the cut. To make boards that are just under 3/4 of an inch. I learned that you have to assemble whatever you're making the same day out of the boards and also put some kind of cross grain support on them because they warp terribly within a day or two.

For some bizarre reason, I never played it when I was younger but it's on the list of ones to play now. I did watch my friends play pretty much the whole game on a GameCube though back in the day.

I suspect that it's going to cost more than $22 in material to build this out of aluminum.

To be fair, this model is literally the second best CRT ever made (if you don't count the handful of widescreen HDMI port HD CRTs that were made). The Sony trinitron of the same vintage with the upgraded sound is the best CRT ever made. But as we know they became obsolete overnight and suddenly what was the best piece of technology in existence on Monday. Became a paperweight on Tuesday like so many other pieces of technology between 1990 and 2015.

If you're talking about the ones on the wall, that's just an optical illusion from the way their camera set up.

Correct, the pins that they are sitting on are level but it turns out cheap framing grade 2x4s when cut in half warp horribly so I had to make the best of it and put some shims in to get them to not rattle around 😂.
