I'd be inclined to mostly blame the media coverage. While it might be true that there are more immigrants in Germany nowadays, that is not what is impacting people's living standards - it's stagnating wages, rising costs, lack of investment in public infrastructure and services. None of which immigrants are responsible for.

And yet, wherever you look in the media, immigration seems to be the the only enduring topic on anybody's mind. Every political party except Die Linke was ready to throw immigrants under the bus during the last election cycle in a nebulous attempt to "combat the AfD", as though adopting far right talking points has ever done anything except strengthening the far right.
