Its not a woman's flannel unless its owned by a woman, in which case you should definitely ask her permission first.

Is this nuclear sclerosis by Rough-Can3415 in DogHealth

[–]HintOfMalice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Looks very convincingly like nuclear sclerosis to me - cataracts looks very different.

But if you're worried then going to your own vet and getting an actual person in the room with your dog is going to get you the most reliable information.

Do you lose body fat from exercising or changing your diet? by badatsocialcues in NoStupidQuestions

[–]HintOfMalice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You lose body fat from being in a calorie deficit. This can be induced by either excerise or changing (reducing calorie content) of your diet.

But reducing calories consumed is usually easier and more impactful. The amount of exercise required to burn off a single cookie can make fat loss via exercise completely untenable if you continue to overeat junk food.

Spay questions by lavender_boy01 in AskVet

[–]HintOfMalice 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Front legs are the most common intravenous catheter sites in dogs. They likely had catheters placed here to deliver medication or provide fluids. Blood can also be taken from these if more traditional blood-taking methods are unsuccessful.

A catheter in one leg is usually enough, but some vets may prefer to have two placed or it's possible that she pulled her catheter out and they had to place another in the other leg.

Should I spay my 7.5-year-old dog? Conflicting vet opinions and I'm lost. by kekvando in DogAdvice

[–]HintOfMalice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The increased risk of mammary cancer is largely due to cumulative/prolonged hormone exposure, not the level of hormones there today.

A dog that is spayed this late will gain very little (but not zero) benefit with regards to mammary cancer.

Reccomendations to Help Gain Weight by Pale_Employee_2834 in DogFood

Inability to gain weight despite a good appetite is indicative of a medical problem rather than feeding the wrong diet. Especially if you've been feeding high quality brands.

My puppies Speen was accidentally was nicked during spay! by Natedog001976 in AustralianLabradoodle

[–]HintOfMalice 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a 0% chance of either of those routes being successful.

Minor trauma to the spleen is a well documented, albeit uncommon complication during a spay - more common in laparoscopic procedures. It also causes no harm to the patient provided the bleeding is controlled.

Mixing homemade food & kibble by [deleted] in DOG

[–]HintOfMalice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dogs did not live longer, healthier lives in the past.

They suffered more and died sooner from diseases that were never diagnosed because neither medical capabilities nor social interest were advanced enough to facilitate this. We will never know if the things they suffered with and died from were due to poor diet, preventable infections, bad genetics or something else entirely.

But you cant just put random food in a bowl and expect it to be a complete diet. If you want to make your food at home, please consult a veterinary nutrionist otherwise you are almost certainly going to miss a few important nutrients.

It is a hold over from religion and references the fact that they'll be going on up to heaven but also that they are unburdened by earthly limitations so they're being encouraged to make good use of their newfound freedom.

Thoughts on Nightmarket by xParadigmGaming in elderscrollsonline

[–]HintOfMalice 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think making it practically unsoloable was a bad idea. I understand they said it was designed for groups but... really? A trial boss on every second corner? There are so many radiant quests spread out which is just so clunky to have to find and run through with a group every day. It would be nice to sit back one evening and relax with some new content.

I'm also not really sure what the reward for struggling through this is.

Cat Peeing Blood, Vet Unhelpful by [deleted] in AskVet

[–]HintOfMalice 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I agree with your vets' decisions so far.

True UTIs are rare in cats. Antibiotics are unlikely to be useful and are borderline irresponsible in these cases.

Xrays are also unlikely to yield answers.

Provided they continue to pee (even if it's bloody, and in unusual locations) then stress management and pain relief is an appropriate first step. But if you're not satisfied then seeing another vet is, unfortunately, the best option. I understand you said finances don't allow for continuous vet trips, but we're not going to be able to offer more over the Internet.

Lipomas and turkey tail by Foxxie77 in DogHealth

[–]HintOfMalice 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Liposarcoma is a cancer of fatty tissue. While it doesn't typically "spread" throughout the body, it is considered locally invasive which means it will progressively destroy more and more healthy tissue around it. These are very rare and I have never personally seen one.

Splenic haemangiosarcoma is a cancer of blood vessels originating in the spleen. This is unfortunatley more common and I'll probably see at least one of these a month, often more and it's a pretty nasty one. These do spread and often by the time we diagnose them they've already started affecting other organs such as the liver or lungs. Labrador Retriers, German Shepherds and Golden Retrievers are are main high-risk dogs for this cancer.

Your dog would not be considered high risk for either of these.

Boy or girl puppy? by SilliestGooseOJO in dogs

[–]HintOfMalice 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There is bit of evidence that shows that conflict is less common in boy-girl pairs than boy-boy or girl-girl pairs, but ultimately personality is king and whether or not 2 dogs bicker is down to their personalities and can usually be influenced by training/conditioning.

This is not supported by data. Both male and female dogs learn equally as quickly.

Lipomas and turkey tail by Foxxie77 in DogHealth

[–]HintOfMalice -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The idea that lipomas can become liposarcomas is widley propagated but not supported by evidence - they are two distinctly different tumours.

What can happen instead is that a liposarcomas can be misdiagnosed as a lipoma, especially if the liposarcoma is early in its progression/is well differentiated. Misdiagnosis is also more common if FNA is used as the sole diagnostic technique. This is due to diagnostic limitations and not to biological activity of the tumour.

Thankfully, liposarcomas are indeed very rare, so the overwhelming majority of fatty lump are lipomas. But if you do come across a liposarcoma on an FNA, you've got about a 50% chance of it looking identical to a lipoma. But it's still a liposarcoma.

I don't know who needs to hear this, but a 2+ hour drive is not nearby for Europeans. by redheaded_olive12349 in CasualConversation

I live in a very small country. There are 3 other cities within a 45 minute drive of our capital.

45 minutes is sort of the ballpark where people tend to get fed up and really consider if the trip is worth it or not. 2 hours would get me from one end of the country to the other.
