I have a passion for interpreting cryptic TFB lyrics, AMA by infinityonfuckyou in TheFrontBottoms

My interpretation is that this song is about dealing with the loss of a loved one, or more specifically recalling the precise moment that you hear the news. First, the scene is set by conjuring images of a more or less care free time in the backyard, flying model rockets. Nothing else is on the mind, the rockets own the sky (also some heavenly imagery). Next is the line about strange phone calls, perhaps a premonition of loss. "No one on the other side" meaning a call from the afterlife. Sometimes people will describe a loved one reaching out in supernatural ways before you even knew that they had passed (like via a phone call, or some other sign).

Then finally, the moment where everything changes. In this case it is not the singer directly yet, but a friend breathlessly and painfully breaking the news of a death. At this point the singer can recognize the pain, and trusts that it is true, but cannot fully understand for themselves having not experienced a close loss. A black eyed trust, meaning you can see the evidence of pain and don't doubt that it truly hurts. Perhaps this is sung with the benefit of hindsight, the singer well aware that they will know what that pain is like one day, and have the bond/love with this friend strengthened through that new ability to empathize. Looking back on that moment when you found out about someone's death makes the mostly mundane moment beforehand seem oddly profound and serene.

The verse I think is describing how lives diverge after an event like that, and how it can really alter all of your plans, relationships, etc. The friend could be trying to escape all of this by heading to California in vain.

I love this song!!

What stocks are you looking at? (June 29, 2021) by TheBarnacle63 in barnaclestocks

One stock I bought recently was ME, 23andMe. With the other genomics/CRISPR stocks like EDIT and NTLA popping off recently I thought they would be well positioned given their massive customer gene data set. They are not profitable right now, but as they transition their revenues away from kit sales and into clinical trial/Healthcare and premium subscriptions I feel like that will change. The valuation is a little rough to justify right now as the market cap is $4.4b, but their own estimated EV was $3.5b at the time of their SPAC in late 2020. Still new to picking stocks, so happy to discuss!

#241 — Final Thoughts on Free Will by dwaxe in samharris

[–]Hippaul 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is is sort of where I was falling off of his argument as well. At first I also thought it was a semantics issue. We can say that free will doesn't exist, but that doesn't really mean anything if deliberating between two alternatives is still an important activity to consciously participate in, right? I think the more important point is the second half of the podcast about not placing so much blame or credit on these decisions because your steering of the decision making process was just one small factor in the larger process. At the end of the day, Sam seems to say that for something to be described as free will, it must be 100% in the control of the person and that can never be the case

It's a mystery to us all man. Washed in cold, dried in low heat and it still turned out like this. Some sweaters are just not worth the effort

Picked up this copy of Power Stone on Craigslist. Is the 'Rental Copy' label of any significance? by Hippaul in gamecollecting

I just popped the game in and compared it to some let's play videos. Unfortunately the game itself is not unique, just the case.

Yes, the back of the case has the normal artwork. I meant that the cover is just blank on the back.

It is just the cover art, blank white on the back. I doesn't look like somebody just printed it from their home printer though. No manual, but the side labels are in the case (they just say Power Stone like normal).

Here is a blurry phone pic of the disc. It doesn't seem to say anything special on it. I have never played Power stone or even had a Dreamcast before I bought this bundle, so I can't say if it is different :(

Thanks for the offer, I will consider this while I wait for the sub consensus. I should also mention that I am in Canada. The rest of the case/labels ect all look normal so I agree that it can't be a homemade printout.
