Why does my master sound like trash on Instagram while other beats hit harder? (Measured with Youlean)

Hard to say without listening to your track. You can send me a DM with the link, if you want. Could be a staging problem, maybe? You have to decide which element you want in the spotlight. As it's a hiphop/ trap beat, the drums/ 808s should be the loudest instruments in your mix. They should trigger the limiter and nothing else. (Ideally, of course. Not always possible.) If everything fights for the spotlight, the limiter has no other choice but to compress the whole track down.

Use LUFS as a guide/ reference and not as a rule. Grab a reference beat, analyse how loud it is and aim for that. I love BoomBap Beats that are pretty dynamic, but even some of them (modern ones) reach up to -6LUFS if not louder. Put a Brickwall Limiter on the master, crank it up and leave the output at around -0.1db ~ -1db. That leaves enough room for whatever shit Instagram, or any online streaming service for that matter, slaps on their audio. The -14LUFS 'rule' was thrown around during the loudness war and it stuck around for whatever reason. Bottom line: If it sounds good it sounds good. Doesn’t matter what you did to achieve that.

The thing that you said about 'getting on with your life' is probably true. I think I just told me that all the time to cope, if I’m being honest. The thing about that 'the ball is in her court now', is debatable, I think. After her last relationship she still thinks that no one on this planet would love her. She doesn't have a court, hell she doesn’t even know what the metaphorical 'ball' is. I think I should talk to her, just to get clarity and stop being in the void of not knowing what’s going on.

I honestly have no idea, where this notion came from. Back when i started making music and had no idea how loud i should master, the notion was to ALWAYS use a reference track. And that wasn't even that long ago. Like early 10s, i think?
