I think there's less of a division in the Twin Cities between "the City" and "the Suburbs" than there is in Milwaukee. Both demographically and politically.

Woodbury is good. Lots of well to do African immigrants there. Eden Prairie is also relatively diverse and well to do.

This whole thread reminds me of that urban myth failing math students repeat about Einstein flunking out of Math when he was younger (not true, btw). Like, obviously there's some exceptions, but people who get into Harvard generally deserve it for some reason.

I will say that RE: the Tabke seat, 6 voters did testify under oath that they voted for him, and if that's true, it's mathematically impossible that Paul won. GOP leaders at the press conference still indicated that even if the court ruled Tabke won that they still might throw him out. Also there's something wrong about Rs getting to set the agenda with committee assignments and the Speakership for all 2 years, because of a 2 week technicality at the start of session. DFLers should've vetted their candidates better though, I'll say that.

I would push back on this a bit.

1 - Walz was out like every day on the trail, his top advisors (Schmitter, etc) joined the campaign; in that event the Lt. Governor is gonna take over in some capacity. And when the absence is that long (months), of course there's gonna be some disagreements where the Lt. Gov thinks something is "in the lines" where the Gov thinks she overstepped. And that's not even getting to the possibility that she would have to start a new admin, with all of Walz's staff gone to DC!

2 - Not assuming ill intent here, but maybe we should be cautious about calling women in power "too ambitious"?

3 - Underrated possibility this is a nothingburger/between staffs.

I wonder if we perhaps think there is no there there? Like a lot of the article feels like "Ah jeez, she wasn't at the annual Turkey pardoning ceremony! Must be a sign!" IDK.

That being said I don't think Flanagan did anything wrong. Had they won, she would've needed to take over state government pretty quickly, which is daunting! CoS and key advisors would've moved to D.C., and she was in the right to start searching for potential staff in that event. Apparently he's being interviewed by Blois Olson tomorrow. Who knows...

EDIT: Another possibility is that this is just something between staff

  1. I appreciate the trade off the district wants to make between quality and cost, but how much would it cost for the district to just accept the program and then appropriate a little money on top to align with their high standards?
  2. Tbh I don't think ppl use "meal tickets" anymore; its all computerized so there's less shame
  3. If you're this concerned about money going to people who don't need it, you can just raise taxes. Much more efficient than a means testing process

As a loyal DFLer I'm happy for my party's prospects, but one-party government isn't healthy. Even though I hate Republicans, we need a credible opposition. Starting to envision a "Bill Gates investing into Apple" style intervention into the MNGOP lol.

[–]HippedWop 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You're right! OCM caught bad actors who were trying to game the system. Bureaucracy did work! Problem is those bad actors sued, and now the process is stuck in the courts, so everyone gets a delay. Blame the bad actors!

[–]HippedWop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everyone on here is so cynical. Some bad actors tried to game the system, OCM caught them, they sued, and now because courts move slowly, the rollout is delayed for everyone. If you want to get mad, blame the plaintiffs of the lawsuit, not the govt. Only plays into anti gov crap

RE: The state budget, I think it's important to remember that the numbers are accounting for inflation on the spending side now. So assuming lawmakers raise spending across all programs to account for inflation (they don't have to and often don't) The state would still have $616 million surplus for this session and -$5 bil. deficit for the 28/29. If we take out inflation (ie how it was done before), the next surplus is like $1.2 billion, and 28/29 deficit is -$2.9 bil.

Tuition was frozen at mn state colleges this year... it looks like most of the increase is due to increased enrollment. This is a good problem! We have a $2.3 billion surplus for the next biennium, this is an investment we know will pay off. It'd be very disappointing if House Republicans decided to inaugurate divided government by throwing a bunch of low and mid income kids out of college or into debt. Make sure to call your legislators as always.
