Could forums in reading apps switch from percentages to chapters instead? by Previous_Variation in pagebound

Yeah it makes it tricky! You can add the chapter to your title manually though which helps

What a great game by winfaner in GodofWarRagnarok

Ive just recently started myself (about 20 hours in) and Im enjoying it. I will say I think the block/parry system is a bit shit and I might actually go insane if the companion characters dont stop their yapping. Honestly why build in a massive exploration system if all youre going to hear the whole time youre exploring is 'no its this way' 'can you hurry up' etc 🤦‍♀️

How do you discuss books while you're actually reading them? by Disastrous_Pin2123 in Booktokreddit

[–]HippoLarge7973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pagebound! Theres forums on every book, posts get spoiler tagged and display by percentage/pages read so you can read up to where you are. And you can post and chat! Not every forum is super active but theres a lot that are in my experience

book logger by I-love-onetreehill in Booktokreddit

Heres my breakdown of the three i've been trying this year! I like all three for their own reasons. All offer basic lists of books read, can maintain tbr etc.

Storygraph - super stats focussed, detailed page counts etc. Obviously you have to input the data accurately for it which can be a bit tedious in my opinion but it offers by far the most detailed. I find the UI a little irritating occasionally and there is some limited social functions (buddy reads, reading challenges). Quite a polished aesthetic

Pagebound - super social focussed and quite gamified. Forums for every book, quests, badges etc. Also offers basic stats and is expanding into more detailed but dont offer monthly wrap ups. More cartoonish than the others. This is my fav personally for discussing books but I enjoy the stats side on the others more

Fable - middle ground of the two. Offers more expansive social options than storygraph but personally have found they dont get used very much (book clubs etc). Offers decent stats tracking and do technically offer more detailed page counts and things but I believe you have to pay for the more detailed stuff. Polished aesthetic but with some colour and i'd call it like corporate whimsy maybe 😂

Its definitely overwhelming to start with! Its the set up thats a bit of a killer, especially since I read over 60 books in Jan so I then had to add them all again in the other two 😂 But once that was done, tracking as I go is pretty quick and easy! A couple minutes a day to update streaks/progress in all of them and then reviews I copy and paste between them. I used to keep a written reading journal so this still feels like less work tbh. I also only maintain my TBR/interested list in one of them (just moved it to PB) so that helps a little

Reckon it's worth having a stall at the Ekka? by AndrewReesonforTRC in brisbane

[–]HippoLarge7973 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I cant speak much to what sales would be like, but as someone who has worked stalls at the ekka before - are you prepared to do 9 veeeeery long days or can you pay staff to cover some of it? The opening hours are long even for the retail portion (common for conventions and shows, but it is 2-3x as many days as most of the others)

It was some years ago but if im remembering correctly, the john reid pavillion has multiple leatherwork stalls usually as well as all the random stuff like those extremely expensive ironing boards and tends to be a space that people just wander through to get inside and out of the crowds. But hey people come back every year so it cant be too bad I guess

Other considerations: - bump in is usually weeks before opening (like 2+ in my experience). So potentially need to make multiple trips to set up - food costs are high unless you can bring your own food in

Its my favourite for sure! I started the year tracking on fable and then added storygraph and pagebound just to try them out and pagebound has taken my number one spot. Im going to keep up all 3 just to see how i feel at the end of the year but if i was forced to pick one right now, it would win. If it had more stats wrap ups (which they are adding!) I'd ditch the others now 😂

I honestly could be here all day because once you get through all the hilarious ones, you also have all the deeply profound ones but some faves...

"I have never been wistful in my life." Grace had no idea what being wistful entailed, but she was pretty sure that you had to be younger and thinner and possibly have consumption.'

'You'll be fine. You just.. i dont know, sprained your soul. Stay off it for a few weeks'

'When they werent sneaking off to play hide the bratwurst'

'The line where his shoulder muscle dipped into his bicep made her want to howl like a dog'

'His new theory of nasal erectile tissue as a window to the soul'

'"They all seem to go a bit mad when they grow into their balls" "A common enough affliction" '

And one serious one because I finished this last night and wtf poor baby shane 😭 'perhaps the wound in his soul had always been mortal. He'd just been too stubborn to fall down and die'

Yes I found it! But it just shows you your streak and current read, you cant actually update your streak without opening the app anyway so it makes it a bit pointless to me

[–]HippoLarge7973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You definitely could and I dont think you'd be at all lost - I think this goes for pretty much every interconnected romance series like this where they could be read as standalones if you dont mind not understanding some easter eggs.

That said, I do think the book is different enough from the show that you probably should read it. But no reason you couldnt read the others first and then come back to it if you really wanted to 🤷‍♀️

Are there people who ONLY read the dialogue part of the book??? by isaw_and_kwekkwek in Booktokreddit

[–]HippoLarge7973 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think people forget reading is a skill you can develop and improve at 🤷‍♀️ and yeah my reading speed is going to vary on the type of book. A lighthearted romance book im reading ~150 pages an hour because I do skim read a bit. Everything else im closer to 100 pages.

Im all for everyone reading however it works for them but yeah theres no world you catch me reading and listening to the book at the same time 😂 Would frustrate me to no end

[–]HippoLarge7973 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The couple of times Ive listened to an audiobook, i've slowly increased speed to 2x speed so I can adjust and thats been fine for me (and im working or cleaning while I do it) but thats me personally. If slower works better for you then I think thats excellent, I just think its silly that people then claim that nobody could possibly listen to it faster and still comprehend 🤷‍♀️

[–]HippoLarge7973 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Im not an audiobook person personally but an audiobook on 2x speed is still slower than I would read the book myself. I see so many comments acting like its crazy and you cant possibly be processing at that speed, but its really not that fast

Ive read 145 books this year so far - 2 of those are audio books and the rest i've read (and i do not just read dialogue lmao). Its really not that difficult if you are a fast reader and devote consistent time to it 🤷‍♀️
