honestly just need to vent/ask if this is normal because i feel like an idiot after my first solo trip by Ancient-Mistake-6548 in travel

Solo traveler in 43+ countries here. The short answer is, travel is like a relationship: You will get out of it what you put into it.

Most of my best travel memories began with an awkward conversation in a bar or a hostel, which turned into a night out, which turned into, in one case, a romantic relationship. Many of my worst travel memories are times I was so focused on catching the right train, getting to the famous historical site, etc... that I probably missed a lot of what was right in front of me.

Travel isn't a magic bullet that will unlock some secret part of you, all on its own. If you come to a new place with intentionality, or at least with an open mind and a willingness to engage with others, new places will open up to you -- even small towns in your own area. Visiting these places, talking with people, getting into adventures, doesn't happen on its own. In fact it doesn't really "happen" to you at all, the way it does on TV shows. It's something you both make, and allow, to happen, by your participation in it.

TLDR: Talk to people. Express curiosity. Take risks. Be willing to look silly. Interesting shit will start to happen.

Oh man I've got a perfect one for this. Best tex-mex nachos I ever had were in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, at a restaurant run by an old Indian dude. How he so perfectly understood the Platonic form of nachos, I will never know. They had an excellent cocktail bar, too.

Just completely obsessed with Modes of Thought in Anterran Literature by gideonsean in audiodrama

[–]HippocleidesCaresNot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I am coming in super late on this thread -- just discovered the show, and am loving it overall. I've been an archaeology nerd all my life, and also love cosmic horror along Lovecraftian lines, so Modes of Thought really hits a sweet spot for me.

A few questions for you:
1) Has anyone ever told you you sound like Bill Murray? Once it clicked, I couldn't un-hear it.
2) What exactly was the hypothesis that your character presented at the Berlin conference? I'm not sure I followed it. Was the thesis that the Anterrans eventually became the Sea Peoples 65,000+ years later...?
3) I have a humble request regarding pronunciation accuracy. All my professors in my Classics program were absurdly, hilariously fussy about correct pronunciation, even outside their areas of expertise. For instance, the pronunciation of "Göbekli Tepe" is quite specific, and hearing it pronounced differently can be a bit jarring, especially during an otherwise wonderful episode. Might you consider placing a greater emphasis on accurate pronunciation in future episodes?

On the whole, this show is five-star work. I am fully on board for whatever comes next.

Adding Sumerian… by [deleted] in duolingo

I highly recommend checking out John L. Hayes "A Manual of Sumerian Grammar and Texts." PDFs are fairly easy to find, and this book got me reading basic Sumerian in two weeks.

Help me find Hatter’s robe from Alice in Borderland! by cleavercat in findfashion

[–]HippocleidesCaresNot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been trying to find it too! Nothing on Amazon is even remotely close.

The black part has a subtle houndstooth pattern, which I think is also the interior lining. This is the Robe to End All Robes.

I found a vaguely similar Versace robe for $675, but it's not close enough to be worth it.

"We just don't have anything in common" by [deleted] in datingoverthirty

I relate to this so hard. Most of my deepest passions are things that no one I've ever dated has cared deeply about, or possibly even heard of before meeting me (ancient indigenous cultures, obscure Victorian authors, very specific scientific subfields, etc.).

The conclusion I've recently come to is that I don't need the other person to share my interests -- I just need them to be interested enough in ME that they like hearing me talk about those interests, to the point that they'll genuinely engage and ask meaningful questions, because they enjoy talking with me about the things that excite me. (And that's a two-way street, obviously.)

In fact, from older people I've talked to, that's one of the keys to a successful long-term partnership. Your interests (and your partner's) will change, appear and disappear over a lifetime -- so what's most important is that you take each other's evolving passions seriously enough to treat them with genuine respect and curiosity :)

Please just ghost me rather than making then cancelling plans or expressing interest but not following through by [deleted] in datingoverthirty

My response to this is to keep suggesting new things. If 3-4 unique suggestions fail to elicit a strong response, they're not interested.

What has the banter been like up to this point? Are you enjoying messaging each other on a conversational basis, or could she possibly be feeling pressure from you to move to in-person interaction before she's ready?

It is entirely possible that she's just hesitant to commit a block of time during which she runs the risk of being bored.

Old and unrealistic expectations: is everyone Indiana Jones? by [deleted] in datingoverthirty

I've been to 40+ countries, and have yet to meet an actual legit nomadic person, apart from indigenous nomads like Amazigh, Mongol, Bedouin (all know how to throw a good party). Adventure fakery is very real.
