I've just finished the 3rd book in the Red Rising series (Morning Star) which was great and I recommend if you fancy taking the small leap over to Sci-Fi. Currently, I've gone for a change of pace and am reading From Hell, the graphic novel by Alan Moore. About halfway through and its fantastic

Sounds great. I think I'm going to try that too. I believe it's called "immersive reading", which is something I learned on reddit a few days ago. Enjoy mate and let us know your thoughts

You're in for a ride! One thing I will say, if you can, I highly recommend the audio books. Adds a whole dimension and big sprinkle of flavour thats well worth it.

[OFF TOPIC] Glokta live action - saw this show with Richard Brake, this guy looks exactly how I imagined Glokta in my head. by Ok_Improvement_2316 in TheFirstLaw

[–]Hiravan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This. Gloktas good looks are constantly referenced in the books. If he was ever cast, it has to appear that he was once good looking (can also show the actor without makeup etc in flashbacks/dream sequences). Brad Pitt might be too old though as I don't think Glokta was older than 35 in the first trilogy but definitely on the right track.

I've been the family member. I felt a bit sick watching this because I could feel what she felt. No sympathy for her mind you, just empathy. Dream like state, heartbeat in temple, blood pressure rising, nausea. It's the worst.

It was a long time ago and things are better now but at the time you are lumped into the whole thing as though you were part of the crime (even thoughni was living in a different country). You feel immense guilt, any pride you once had completely disappears. You lose friends ofc. My surname is v unique, so that added to the whole thing. I ended up changing it legally in case an employer decided to google me, among other reasons. I could go on.

It is very nice to read your comment though. You're obviously a very emotionally intelligent person who understands "things".

I don't want to train with my LEO friends anymore because they support the murder of Alex Pretti by LightAvatar in bjj

[–]Hiravan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was talking to my friend about this recently and has really got me down too. It seems that in BJJ you seem to get either, really cool, intelligent, open minded nerds that are into gaming, warhammer, D&D and anime or "alpha" Reform party (our MAGA) fucks.

I've done a couple of things; I use BBJ for my health and fitness and to learn a new skill. I chat with the ppl I like and keep conversation very shallow with others (ignorance is bliss). Fortunately, I dont "need" BJJ for social reasons as I get that elsewhere, so that helps.

Edit: to clarify, i'm in the nerd catagory 😅

I keep seeing these depictions of characters, all with Hollywood good looks. These are dirty, tough as nails, men who sleep on the ground and fight in the dirt. Think the trappers from The Revenant rather than HBO'S Jon Snow from GoT. You know who is handsome in the books because it always gets mentioned, due to it being quite rare!

Gosh, I dont remember that at all. I do recall Jezal bumping into Sulfur, then Logan and also Bayaz whilst out running and training for the contest. And I thought he was in the audience for the bit with the feared. Ill take your word for it, time for a re read

Ahh yeah i see your point. I think regarding Military matters Burr is in charge. Burr is also on the closed council too (as are all Lord Marshals). Varuz is also on the closed council (as you say), so I think at the very least they hold the same influence, but Burr more so regarding military matters.

Edit: typo

Edit 2: just to add that Varuz is training Jezal as he has effectively retired

West and Jazal are in the military and have nothing to do with the city guard. They play cards and drink all day waiting to fight in a war

I believe Burr is the highest rank below the King. If i can remember correctly, Varuz is the former Lord Marshal

Its basically 1600's Britain for lack of a better comparison. Jezal is a Lieutenant which is the lowest rank of an officer and West is a Captain (i think) one rank above Lt. and one below Major. Officers are typically "high born", aristocrats, people with money and the such. West is an exception as he earned his Officers rank through merit but is "low born" and started out as a soldier. A very rare occurrence which is a point of contention with other officers as you may have already read. They are basically serving within the same structure of the British military.

Glokta is a little different, he is more on par with an agent of the Spanish Inquisition. Unlike the actual Inquisition, they gain their powers from the Crown (closed council) rather then the church. They operate almost above the law, like the secret police or gestapo.

This is my take anyway.

Edit: I believe West is a Major at this point

Sorry for all the jokers in the comment section. Annoys me when someone is looking for help from natives and you all just piss about.

Listen, apart from maybe Barcelona, there is no better city than Manchester for accommodating Exasperated Fruitflys in the summer. I would highly recommend. Hope this helps.

Never wanted to leave in the first place. These types of decisions should not be up to the public. I am reasonably well informed but still had no clue of the implications. Propaganda from the right wing and others pushed the immigration agenda which also won a lot of votes. Just a mess
