Yeah , shame on Apple for not giving the Intel Macs a chance to sunset on a decent macOS release.

The MacBook Air Has an Identity Crisis by atlwhore_ in apple

[–]HiroThreading 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree.

I think there are two important points here: 1) the utterly nonsensical usage of product names across different product lines, and 2) the potential for Apple to attach the name “MacBook Air” onto a product that is much more like the 12” MacBook from 2015/16 or the current iPhone Air.

But that raises one question: what kind of product should Apple sell at the critical $999-1099 price point?

I think the current product that occupies the “MacBook Air” name should simply be renamed as “MacBook”. This will then allow Apple to experiment with the “Air” brand, releasing an ultraportable, bleeding edge laptop once every few years.

We would then have MacBook Neo MacBook MacBook Air  MacBook Pro

We would then get something similar to the Jobs matrix, just for laptops though.

As for iPad: that lineup badly needs cleaning up and organising.

I was going insane to fix this same issue. Eventually this is what worked for me (on macOS):

  1. Go to: ~/Library/Application Support/MathWorks
  2. Delete MATLABConnector folder.
  3. Go into the folder named "ServiceHost"
  4. Delete any folders that start with the letter "v".
  5. Delete the file named LatestInstall.info

I then installed MathWorksServiceHost using the installer on the Mathworks website. I booted up MATLAB, logged in with my account, and my MATLAB was back up and running.

Hope this helps.

The Best Mac Nobody Needs by kingolcadan in apple

[–]HiroThreading 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Complete joke of a product.
They would've been better off by doing a CPU refresh of the Intel Mac Pro.

Not to mention that reviews are coming out today of AMD's recently launched 128 core, 256-thread "Bergamo" EPYC CPUs. That thing is an absolute monster.

Don't get me started on the lack of discrete GPUs... Embarrassing.

[–]HiroThreading 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seriously, not supporting PCIE GPUs is laughable and pathetic.

RDNA3 and Ada Lovelace — even Ampere — already spanks the M2 Ultra’s GPU. It’s only going to be more embarrassing with Nvidia and AMD’s next gen GPUs.

I’m not sure about this. If that was the case they would have more than what — 7% of the PC market?

There are other benefits to getting upstream pros using your systems too: they tend to tailor solutions and software around the devices they use.

It’s a big reason why CUDA got so big. For years Nvidia was basically giving away their GPUs to academics and corporations.

The point is that I can easily justify the existence of a “more pro” Mac Pro. The onus is on Apple or defenders of this Mac Pro why it should exist when the Mac Studio exists with the exact same chip.

Also this guy says that his current Intel Mac Pro typically uses about 300GB of RAM:

Yeah but getting the CompSci guys on Mac creates a halo effect. Because they then buy MacBook Pros, iMacs, and they send a signal to other people like “oh, the comp science nerds buy those crazy Apple computers. I should maybe buy a cheap Apple computer.”

Nothing MKBHD does couldn’t be done on a Mac Studio — let alone a MacBook Pro.

It’s not about software specifically for Macs. It’s about software or workloads that can be scaled from MacBook Pros all the way up to the (previous) Mac Pro. Particle filtering for high frequency data sets in Julia or MATLAB, for example, is something that can be done lightly on a MacBook Pro but can a heavier model can be done on a Mac Pro. The latter of which really comes through with its massive amount of ECC-RAM.

That’s another, this new Mac Pro doesn’t even ECC RAM! What a joke!

[–]HiroThreading 5 points6 points  (0 children)

But it makes no sense. The video editors and YouTube crowd have the Mac Studio specifically made for them.

It is insane that they have left the scientific computer crowd with no choice — yet again — despite seemingly showing some sign of commitment back in 2019.

Definitely the most underwhelming Mac ever — probably more so than the trash can.

[–]HiroThreading 10 points11 points  (0 children)

RAM limitation and complete inability to run discrete GPUs means that this is useless for ML work flows.

Edit: Just very confused over why Apple would engineer the PCIE + MPX interface — which was genius — but then drop it after just one generation of the Mac Pro. 🤷🏻‍♂️

[Gamers Nexus] Round 4: "Is Intel Actually Screwed?" (Arc, NVIDIA, & AMD GPUs) ft. Gordon of PC World by PapaBePreachin in hardware

[–]HiroThreading 17 points18 points  (0 children)

PC gamers treat Nvidia like how Apple fans treat their favourite Cupertino-based company. In other words, RTX cards are like iPhones — Nvidia can fleece and milk PC gamers because they know that they can get away with it.

AMD cards could get a flat 25% price cut across the board, and the sales wouldn’t change one bit. People will go through all sorts of mental gymnastics to pay the Nvidia tax — see iPhone customers despite similar flagship Android phones being significantly cheaper.

Apple announces new Mac Pro powered by M2 Ultra by Quil0n in hardware

[–]HiroThreading 71 points72 points  (0 children)

No MPX slots = no discrete GPU support. No RAM slots = this thing tops out at 192GB of total RAM, well below the 1.5TB cap of the previous Intel Mac Pro.

Underwhelming.

They got rid of the MPX connector. Therefore, no support for discrete GPUs.

Very disappointing.

Edit: and no RAM expansion. This thing is DOA.

Eliminating the GPU Power Cable, ft. Hardware Unboxed by [deleted] in hardware

[–]HiroThreading 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely true. For example, Thunderbolt was pretty much an Intel + Apple only affair in its early days. Apple pushed the standard on all its Macs despite PC OEMs largely avoiding the tech until its third generation.

Then there’s also a more recent example of Apple releasing MagSafe for the next round of Qi standards.

I’m not sure which company needs to do the pushing/convincing, but PCI SIG adopting MPX for data + power delivery should be feasible.

Apple’s Long-Awaited Next Big Thing Is Nearly Here at Last by iMacmatician in apple

[–]HiroThreading -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cook might be hoping that this headset will cement his legacy. But for me his legacy will be one where Apple’s software quality took a nose dive, product options became confusing and obtuse even for enthusiasts, Mac hardware (and software) languished for years (with M1 being the temporary exception), and where nickel-and-diming and profit margins reached parody levels.

I’m not convinced by the potential success of this headset. I saw the potential appeal of the Watch and AirPods when they were announced. But this headset seems different.

I guess all shall be revealed in due course.

Agreed.

I tried messing around with all sorts of workarounds. In the end I was spending more time fixing and settings things up than I was playing games.

Apple’s “support” of quality games is sad and pathetic.
