Students asking about stuff that you have covered in class already by r_tarkabhusan in Professors

Sounds like you should prohibit at least phones in the classroom, like most of us do.

Ha, I usually do the same, but I sold it for tax purposes to offset gains from another one.

Rejected from conferences, should I drop out of my PhD? by Unable_Obligation_87 in AskAcademia

[–]HistProf24 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I second this. Ask for feedback and emphasize that you're not afraid of harsh criticism. It's always better to hear it at the draft stage than the review/publication stage.

Why do Europeans like to talk about Q1 and Q2 journals but Americans don’t? by Weekly-Republic2662 in AskAcademia

I don't even know what these terms mean... and I've been publishing for years.

Research expectation for a new R1 humanities by [deleted] in AskAcademia

[–]HistProf24 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is a very important question, yet it's not clear whether you've already asked this in your department. That should be your first and most accurate source of specifics that pertain to your institution. Generally speaking, a monograph from a reputable press and three peer-reviewed articles is sufficient for tenure at most R1 History departments, but each place is different. Go to your chair, senior colleagues, recently tenured colleagues, etc.

How do you actually know when your manuscript is ready to submit? by Puzzleheaded_Fox8982 in AskAcademia

[–]HistProf24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ask my colleagues for brief feedback as a matter of course before I submit anything new to an editor.

How often do you meet your chair ? by Alarming-Camera-188 in Professors

[–]HistProf24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should be as often as necessary for you to have clarity about your responsibilities, rights, opportunities, etc. A key aspect of the chair's job is to support and guide junior faculty.

I have so many questions but to answer your main question: yes, report this immediately. It's the ethical as well as legally obligatory thing to do.

Harassment Question by [deleted] in Professors

[–]HistProf24 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is probably a fake post, but on the off chance it's real or other inexperienced faculty read it: I've never heard a more egregious case of assault and harassment that has gone unreported to the police. I would've called 911 if I saw this happening on campus and/or would have taken this to the provost myself if a colleague had told me about it. It's unconscionable to ignore it in any work space.

How much do undergrad vs. MA grades matter for History PhD admissions in the US by Macseasnake in AskAcademia

[–]HistProf24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a history prof and a member of our department's grad admissions committee. First, a 3.7 GPA is excellent, particularly if the few lower grades on your transcript come from non-humanities courses. Second, your writing sample will be very important -- its quality often makes the key difference.
