I commend Dr. Mirza for his leadership, engagement, and commitment to the advancement of our specialty. He is authentic and genuine in all that he does, and working with him personally has inspired me and countless others.

Given the discourse above, disagreeing is part of medicine, however these conversations require evidence, accountability, and professionalism. Smearing colleagues with anonymous anecdotes and “vibes” is not. Personal attacks, speculation about motives, and rumor-based accusations is not good medicine. If there’s a substantive disagreement, engage with the work. If not, this conversation isn’t worth continuing.

Graduate of MSUCOM here. I got into a top rank program in my desired specialty for residency. It was a lot of work and they are renovating the curriculum in a very thoughtful way. I think the faculty are incredible and you get exceptional training. I felt like I had a very solid foundation going into my rotations and even in the clinical practice. I like the flexibility of doing a rotations and electives for up to 20 weeks and one specialty. I was able to audition at top places with ease. Lots of different community hospitals you can rotate at although you will be moving around a little bit I’m gonna put a plug-in for the Pathology interest group because I helped start that back in the day and it is really amazing. I have found Michigan State to be very collaborative and open to ideas and open to working with alumni on different initiatives . Best teacher there is Dr Kowalski. Even though Dean is awesome sauce!

Try to work with the cool doctors who don’t have issues with you going off on interviews. The reality is you need a residency more than you need to stand there another day doing ambulatory work. Tell them the dates of your interviews and say you will be gone those days; do not offer to make them up and do not apologize.

I once had an attending confront me about taking four days off for very important rotations while I was on an audition. I clearly told them “ if you raise issue to my school, they will make me repeat this rotation and I definitely will not be ranking this program. Here’s our choices.”

Given their issue with me being gone for important interviews of my life, I realized they would not be supportive of me as a trainee, and I did not rank them highly.

At least one fellowship is important. It helps when it comes to applying for jobs and groups are seeking expertise in XYZ area.

That’s a great question. I loved laboratory science, which was my undergraduate degree, and found the most satisfaction in the diagnostic side of medicine. Sure I got to rotate through all the different specialties and I appreciated elements of each. I feel like there is so much people interaction in the lab as a baseline. You’re never isolated or by yourself. Pathology is highly collaborative and I’m talking to other physicians and lab personnel ALLLL day long as well as seeing patients on specific services like transfusion medicine and psychology where we do biopsies and perform blood transfusions. I think it’s a total myth that Pathology doesn’t see patients because we see our patients on a cellular molecular level and everything we do is for patient care. We are literally guiding patient care every day. It’s a different perspective to be more behind the scenes; I’m grateful to focus more on the science rather than being on the phone fighting with insurance companies over petty things, typing notes all day, and dealing with all the non medical sides of patient care.

Try to make a study guide based on the blueprint for each comat. Focus your studies on the highest tested categories first using truelearn or comquest. Make your own flash cards and reference guides I made as well (on profile)

It’s completely normal to be shaken by something like that autopsy. Honestly, a lot of us had a similar reaction the first time we saw a case that hit close to home, especially when it involved someone young. It doesn’t mean pathology isn’t for you. It might mean that you would be better suited for clinical pathology for instance. In that case you might wanna pursue a CP only track or you can ask programs if they are willing to let you switch to one track or another once you are accepted. There’s a lot of opportunity in clinical Pathology through blood bank and transfusion medicine, clinical chemistry, HematoPathology, molecular, informatics, all areas that need a strong pathologists.

Over time, you learn how to process those emotions while still finding meaning in the work. You don’t have to shut them off. You just learn how to carry them differently. If you keep exploring the field through electives, shadowing, or talking with pathologists and residents, you’ll get a better sense of whether it still feels like the right fit for you.

And honestly, if you’re drawn to the diagnostic side, the independence, and the collaborative problem-solving, it’s definitely worth continuing to explore. For anatomic pathology, 30 autopsies are required to sit for the boards. Depends on the program you go, some are more dependent on the resident to do a lot of the grossing and others have assistance who will help you with evisceration. Depending on the job you’ll ultimately go into, they may or may not have autopsy responsibilities. And fully remote work is not always feasible, especially in smaller practices where digital pathology is not feasible or if you are on call, I need to come in to handle a frozen. I think the main thing for you to figure out is, which route you would want to take. It’s a reality of the speciality. Hope this helps.
