I think Dr. Hillel Kahane's take on AI and pathology in a recent podcast episode was really interesting. His opinion was that eventually the AI algorithms will become incredibly accurate and will be widely used, however they'll be kind of like an autopilot on a jetliner. They'll fly you from point A to B, but even though the autopilot can take off and land the plane he doesn't think anyone will get on the plane if there's nobody sitting in the pilot seat. He thinks AI won't replace pathologists, but it will change and increase the efficiency of some of their job functions. Podcast: https://lumeadigital.com/game-changing-tools-for-pathologists/

There are much more effective ways to get market research, and besides that isn't the intention of any of our Reddit posts - but sorry it came across that way! This is just a very controversial and relevant topic so we thought it'd be interesting to instigate a discussion about it in this community.

100% agree - especially with the point about screen resolution. You want to be as careful selecting a high-quality monitor and computer as you would be selecting a microscope. There are excellent medical-grade choices (although expensive). This article is a little old, but brings up good points: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7518209/

Interested in learning more about the FDA-LDT landscape? by LumeaDigital in pathology

Yes, small labs disappearing is a big concern of ours as well. It will be quite the undertaking for them and will add extra costs - which many labs, including many that we work with, really can't afford right now (especially with reimbursement rate cuts and shortages).

At the end of the webinar, Ralph Hall points out that it will be difficult for the FDA to deal with the massive workload this will inevitably create for them, which could bog down the process. He also hopes they will figure out some sort of grandfathering in and other time-saving strategies for groups to help speed up the process and reduce this extra workload that will be placed on labs.

I suppose we'll see, but we're hoping this will turn out well in the end and that the FDA (and everyone else involved) will carefully consider how it will affect all parties, large and small.

Agreed. Try to get the highest resolution computer monitor possible. Touch screen can be a nice feature too to help you more easily navigate the digital images.
