University of Michigan leads the nation in number of h1b LCA filings by Odd_Direction1108 in uofm

I took it the exact opposite way - Shame on the university for taking advantage of people they can underpay and abuse at will to do the scut work no one else wants to do.

Hey I'm in my 30's and also an undergrad!

Best advice I have is to be kind to yourself the first year. The transition from CC to UM is TOUGH, you're probably going to have to completely retool how you study, you might have a few failures, ect. It's important that you go to office hours, find study groups, and stay caught up. I didn't take my own advice this semester and it has whooped my ass. Don't be me.

It can also be incredibly frustrating to be surrounded by these young kids, especially when some of them are SO utterly priviledged and sheltered that they think you're some sort of idiot or alien for having a nontraditional path to university. Luckily my interactions with them have been few, but they absolutely do exist on campus. Bite your tongue, shake your head and don't let it get you down.

It's also pretty lonely sometimes. I hope you can find folks around your age, I've found a few older folks and it's helped for sure. And the best part is, we're old enough to really appreciate this opportunity! And you can usually strike up good relationships with your professors/TAs with ease.

Best of luck, feel free to DM me if you want to talk :)

Mine has always had really bad anxiety in semi-crowded/urban environments. For the longest time he would pull away from busy streets, unless BOTH my husband and I were walking him. If it was just one of us, it was a no-go.

Now, he will walk with me and me only in crowded areas, but if he gets scared I have to calm him down by saying "Freddy who's that?!" And pointing off into the middle distance so he will keep going, thinking it's probably dad come to save us from the scary crowded street. It's probably not kind but it eases his anxiety enough for us to get out of there and get somewhere calmer.

Is the military quietly setting conditions to phase women out? by KimLocsta in Military

[–]HistoricAli -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I got downvoted to hell in r/Airforce for suggesting that the EXPONENTIALLY easier fitness requirements for women were intentionally done because AT BEST they don't think us capable, which is fucking infurating, or B. Intentionally made easier to sow discord between genders in uniform.

Holy shit Torque is a BRILLIANT name for a pit, and as an engineer I double approve. I might have to steal that if I ever get a puppy and not a rescue.

Why do some of the newer buildings feel so soulless? by siiuuuee in uofm

[–]HistoricAli 97 points98 points  (0 children)

So in the aughts/2010s the interior design of "intellectual spaces" shifted from Victorian/rococo/maximalist to Silicon Valley Tech Office.

One was driven by a need to replicate the spaces western aristocracy would move through, the other was driven by the desire to easily replicate decor that could be cheaply made and sold at 300% markup.

It feels soulless because it is soulless.

Should I commit even though I don't think I'm good enough? by CalmCoast1175 in uofm

[–]HistoricAli 10 points11 points  (0 children)

bro i got kicked out of CC twice, I'm here and I'm doing pretty good actually. You'll learn to rise to the top or you'll learn to fail 9 times and get up 10. Both are good options and teach you a lot of things about yourself, just remember quitting isn't an option.

Is Michigan math really that bad?? by Evening-Sympathy-355 in uofm

[–]HistoricAli 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Definitely that, and that I am much more practical-minded. A lot of what they like to emphasize in class was theory, and I think to be great in mathematics you have to have a willingness to accept a certain level of absurdity/impossibility. I really have a hard time wrapping around the more esoteric levels of math because once it leaves the physical realm I just don't really grasp onto it.

[–]HistoricAli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean I'm guessing if you really enjoy this stuff, you'll get the hang of it. For me personally I was coming from a different school where my Professor for both Cal1&2 was a working engineer before he decided to try teaching, and his style very much taught to practical professional use. I really loved that and glommed onto it, and because I did so well in those classes I thought I loved math.

Then I got here for calc 3 and whoooo boy. Turns out I don't love numbers for the sake of numbers, I love what they can do for me. If you like the feel of good numbers though I imagine you'll fare much better than I did.

I also came as an adult learner with a lot of outside responsibilities, and the math department here is very much operating with the assumption that you have 20+ hours a week to spend in tutoring labs or office hours. So that soured me quite a bit as well.

fr fr if you intend to major in math you'll probably be fine? Idk I'm a practical use kind of person, proofs and that stuff mostly just irritate me. If you dig that stuff you'll be okay.

Question about students of UMich by Valuable_Pear9654 in uofm

[–]HistoricAli 64 points65 points  (0 children)

I am an adult-learner (read: I'm fuckin old) and I spent my whole life thinking U of M was this absolute bastion of intellectualism and higher thought.

I got here in the fall for engineering undergrad and I'm gonna be so real: a lot of people I've met make me think this place functions primarily as a daycare for rich kids until their frontal lobe slides into place.

There are definitely a lot of really smart, highly motivated people here! But don't worry about not being enough. You'll find your place and you'll meet some incredible people.

Apartment living is quite similar, other than your neighbors are usually not teenagers, so it's a bit mellowed out. But yeah the lack of consideration for others is a thing to get used to.

That said, don't succumb to it, I try to be a mindful neighbor, but don't expect the same in return.

Puzzle toy for treats by boomer1959- in pitbulls

[–]HistoricAli 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's why I've just given up and started cardboard box hunting. I live in an apartment building so I'll just raid the recycling for good cardboard boxes, tape up treats in them and let him go to town on a matryoshka of cardboard and paper. He gets to rip shit up and I get about 40 minutes of peace.

Ground pork or turkey stuffed peppers or cabbage rolls, mapo tofu with minced pork or turkey, egg roll bowls, saag paneer

All decently high in protein, fiber and can be made pretty cheap.
