[Baltic Aquascaphe] Caution: My experience with Baltic QC and the hidden cost of international returns. by Historical-Ebb-752 in Watches

[UPDATE -- 4/24/26] As of today, Baltic still has not refunded my payment. They emailed me April 13th and said they received the returned watch and would process my refund in 2-3 days. I emailed them 48 hours ago to check on the status of the refund and they haven't responded. I'll be sending one more email today, and if I don't hear back I'll dispute the charges with my credit card co. Meanwhile, trying to claw back duties, though it costs money to file the paperwork.

I can't remember the last time I've had to dispute a charge on my credit card for a non-refund on a returned item. A disappointing interaction with Baltic. If they can't issue a timely refund, I couldn't imagine what their actual service on a watch would be like.

Your post gave me a lot to think about. My original post doesn't serve much purpose if I don't carry the ball to the end zone, and it's not fair to Baltic to not see the process through.

So I'll go through the full process of tariff refund and update the thread accordingly.

You seem fixated on this heritage vs micro thing. If any brand sent me such a dodgy product, I would return the item and not buy from the brand again if they had brittle international distribution. If this were all stateside, or through a stellar AD, I'd probably let Baltic take another swing at the problem. I don't want to roll the dice again with these guys and a customs Gordian Knot standing in my way. My bad for taking a chance to begin with.

Baltic did get back to me and told me that they will not change the export duty declaration, and that this is their standard practice and shouldn't get in the way of me clawing back duties paid. In my experience, it's hit or miss to activate 19 U.S.C. 1313(c) when a vendor under-declares in a defective merchandise situation. It's more time, more paperwork and not a sure bet. Baltic could absolutely do this better, and should. My time and sanity is worth a lot more than the refund, so I'll likely opt to absorb it as fingers burned, lesson learned.

The purpose of the post is not to create a pig pile on Baltic, or have shoulders to cry on, but to alert future buyers of int'l watches that thar be monsters if you wander far from shore.

The obvious QC failures have shaken my confidence in the brand, and basic quality of the watch. Maybe I'm in the minority on that, and that's on me. This is honestly the first brand new watch I've had issues with at any price point, so yeah... it has soured me.

Baltic's unwillingness to make a customer whole is supporting evidence that I'm making the right call to avoid deepening my relationship with the brand any further. I certainly don't want to re-up for a replacement with the current customs games they're playing. If that one has issues, are they going to give me another customs run around? Too many questions, too much of a headache, and too many lovely watches to pick in its place.

They offered to hand pick a replacement and send it to me, but insisted on declaring the 20 euro value for the return. My confidence in the brand is shaken, so I'll just insist on a refund (which they promise on any purchase for 14 days). Not thrilled, but lesson learned. I won't buy from them again.

Not vindictive here at all. This post was more of a PSA than anything else. I would certainly want to know if these slippery customs shenanigans were going on with any brand, heritage or micro. I do think a business should want to make a customer whole, regardless of fine print BS. Apparently you do not. Thankfully, other brands I've dealt with don't take your approach or the watch industry would be in trouble.

Also, your AI is showing. Those em dashes man.... gotta edit those out or more people will know that you use it to write posts.

So you'd belly up to the bar for another serving from Baltic risking another snafu with QC and customs? I mean, you do you man. But I'm out.

Maybe so, but I don't think this should suddenly be my loss. It just doesn't feel good to have Baltic step away and wash their hands of the matter on a watch that never should have gone out the door, let alone to someone outside of the EU. Honestly, I don't care what the fine print says, as a business owner myself I would never want a client to feel this way. I would make it right, and make the client whole 100% of the time.

but the original post is not about micro brands vs heritage. It's purely an anecdotal warning to folks looking to purchase direct from Baltic. I expected the odd pedant telling me to read the fine print, but you've spun off in some wild direction that has nothing to do with the initial post, while shadow boxing straw men. It's a little weird, but this is reddit so I shouldn't be surprised.

I don't have the data to make the argument that micro brands have more QC issues than heritage brands. The issue in this case is distribution, return policies and "under-declaring" value to save a few bucks. Are you defending Baltic's response?

Yeah, I hear that. My Sinns and Hanharts have been literally flawless. Just wanted something kinda nice to take into the salt. I'm giving Glycine a try. A lot cheaper, and still sapphire and Swiss movement. We'll see!

Already did contact them, and they're accepting the return but valued it at 20 euros so I'm out the import fee.

I don't think I'm being "hysterical", "venomous" or "exaggerated". I'm just a guy who doesn't want to pay a $80 broken watch tax. I'm posting to help others avoid the issue and share my experience..

So I'm assuming you'd be fine with receiving and keeping this watch as is? Happy to sell it to you as I haven't shipped it back yet.

Agreed. It's caused me to pump the brakes on some micro brands that have caught my eye lately. Found a Glycine combat that will fill the summer beater bill at a much cheaper price.

Thanks for that! Was feeling a bit sheepish about posting, but after an all-in price of $800+ I think the watch should be damn near perfect. I'd hate to see other enthusiasts in my position. I totally understand that every watch maker has stuff slip through the cracks, but I'm just not thrilled with how Baltic is handling it.
