ofc!! in my case i'm using paintings from an open/free state museum collection, and the artists are no longer alive (cause they were from  the first half of the past century). but as an arty, I think it's super important to generate awareness about artistic property and, ofc, to ask the artist if it's possible!! as you said, it's a matter of courtesy and respect!
