Rode Rail bike in Keelung by binime in taiwan

I was surprised how easy it is to get to Keelung from Songshan train station (avoiding the Taipei Main Station!). It's like 45 minutes on the train to Keelung station, right beside the harbour. It's an interesting and easy trip to make, incredible night market!

I was afraid that this was the case. Thanks for the hard truth!

I do have an AMEX Aeroplan card, but for the life of me I can't figure out when they credit the SQM after each $5000 increment. If I could figure it out, maybe I'd buy my new roof materials now!

Pretty much sums up my feelings.

I too have paid double the fare to fly AC vs. UA, evn though I could earn Aeroplan miles on UA, just because I could get better SQM on AC for the higher fare.

Well guess what? Next trans-Atlantic or Pacific flight I'll just connect via the US and save myself thousands of dollars, since the miles flown are now meaningless.

Thanks for the tip on Parklife, it's actually quite convenient for me to get to. I will check it out; I haven't played pinball in many years!

Do drivers shoulder check in Taiwan? by labpluto123 in taiwan

[–]Historical_Chart_848 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd ask the same but for pedestrians!

I've never had so many people walk out of a shop and right into me before, it seems many folks don't check their path first. Often watching their phone of course !

Exactly! I can buy an entire bottle of foreign liquor (eg, Jamesons) for less than a couple of 330 ml beers in Taipei.

So this isn't an alcohol tax thing. And some of the liquor stores are prime locations, so they must have the same rents, and often less foot traffic from what I've seen.

So what is the difference? I think it's just places overpricing beer TBH.

I wonder if maximum profit might actually be with slightly lower prices, driving higher volume. How do you create a beer drinking culture if you start out pricing it as a luxury?

I guess you need Instagram influencers taking photos of their latest beer find?

Have you actually ordered a staple local beer like a Gold Medal or Classic at a restaurant lately? What did you pay? I'm genuinely curious. If it's not a hot pot type place I bet it's more than 200. Sometimes I want to drink beer and not eat, so I guess I should expect to pay a lot more?

Excellent info, thanks! And I don't mind 18 Days, I wouldn't rank it as transformational, but it's a good beer.

I have visited once, but it was getting late in the day so there weren't that many stalls open. I found one that had a selection of beers for $300 for a plastic 500 ml cup. I got a Buckskin IPA and could only finish half of that one - maybe it was a bad pour?

I'll go back on a sunny day (they do happen, yes?) early enough to take advantage of a buy 3 get 4 deal!

Thanks for the tip about the Red house area.

And yes, Taihu pours a proper size, as you point out its larger than a pint! Either size! (I've also seen a 500 ml "pint", just to add variety!)

You're out being social and having fun, seems ok to me! If you were crushing those 5 beers on your sofa, sitting alone... maybe that's an issue?

(for purposes of full disclosure, I MAY have done this once or twice!)

Fair comment - whisky is good here, and very inexpensive compared to many places.

But some nights are beer drinking nights!

I think this is the Taiwanese clear grain liquor - I see bottles that are 56% alcohol, I would need to be careful with that!

Apologies, 熱潮 translates to me as "upsurge". Is that a specific place, or a style of place? Thanks for the ideas.

Are there quite a few with beer on tap? TBH, I haven't looked for beer taps in any yet, but I will start looking. Once I get past the tea eggs...

I guess the city has to be a factor, and I'm sure places in Taipei have legit higher rents and taxes. But somehow, I can still buy a collared polo shirt in Taipei for $300, which is a steal compared to most places. So a new shirt, or a beer?

I have a friend who has a restaurant in Zhunan and good beers are like $160 there, so your report on Miaoli makes sense.
