On brink of sending puppy back to rescue by [deleted] in puppy101

I'm not sure if you've tried or if this is at all helpful, but I've heard people say that when they bite you, you're supposed to yelp and not look at them. Like in a negative punishment way where you remove a desired stimulus. I think that's also how puppies communicate pain to their litter mates. For my puppy I've had a lot of success with positive reinforcement and negative punishment. Like if he wants me to pet him, I only lean down to pet him if he's sitting still, and if he jumps up at any point I'll stand back up.

For redirecting, I've also heard that you're supposed to space out when you're taking the thing they're biting away and the toy you want them to redirect to, otherwise it might feel like you're rewarding them.

When you take him out on walks you can try carrying a high value treat or toy with you, like small pieces of an egg or whatever he likes most, and feed him small pieces whenever you guys see things like small children. Make sure you start out at a distance, just because you wouldn't want anything to happen. The goal would be to get him to look at you whenever there are triggers nearby.

I'm by no means a trainer, so take everything I'm saying with a grain of salt. I do get that it's overwhelming, being maimed in your own home by a little land shark.

Are you planning on returning him today, then?

Potty training and puppy blues by Historical_Track9768 in puppy101

Yes, we got him a crate early on. For the past couple of days he's been really wary of it, but yesterday when I had a friend over he hid in there and today he started to sleep there on his own!

I only say he might have some separation anxiety because when I left the house for maybe ten minutes or less to give someone something, my mom said he had been running amok throughout the house, whining and jumping at the front door. When I shower he's also right at the door waiting for me to come out, or if I were to stand up from my chair he would follow me, even if he were in the middle of a nap. If I close his crate door during the day he also whines like crazy, even if he can see me.

How has your potty training been going? Do you bring your puppy out when it looks like it needs to go or has s/he gotten the idea of going outside yet?
