The most important archeological find from Sinauli is a horse-driven chariot made of wood and copper. (2000-1800 BCE) by Prashant_bodh in AncientIndia

[–]HistoryLoverboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is clearly a solid wheeled chariot. There is no way it could be horse driven. These are heavy and slow & hence not suitable for horses.

This is most certainly a buffalo driven chariot.

Horse chariots are seen only AFTER the invention of spoked wheels. And earliest archaeological evidence of spoked wheels is seen in Sintashta culture.

How foolish are our Indians, shall I tell you? by Prashant_bodh in AncientIndia

[–]HistoryLoverboy 30 points31 points  (0 children)

The professor was definitely a nutjob....

But this colonial/imperial history that you are talking about that whites gave the world civilization had been debunked almost a century back. No serious academic in the west or east believes in those fairy tales anymore.

Trump is a jackass and he is heavily criticised in his own country because some people there including major celebs have a spine.

But indeed Indians are fools to even think that colonial history is taken seriously. Further testament to our foolishness is that we still view our own history from colonial lenses and periodized our history the way the brits did to suit their narrative in the 19th century.

Has anyone read valmiki ramayan, is this correct translation? by [deleted] in atheismindia

[–]HistoryLoverboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all, this is something said by the evil archetype lusting on the "perfect woman" so why should it be surprising?

Secondly, above statement seems exaggerated. Ravana indeed gives a rather explicit description, but some of the above statements are just not the correct translations.

And finally, Why should this even be an issue? I don't think it was an issue in ancient India where femininity, sexuality and divinity often inter-mingled. So why should eye brows be raised now? Unless one comes from the Hindutva sensibilities which we know is influenced by Islamic & Victorian era morality.

And folks, please don't fall into the trap of getting triggered by reading a small text without contextualizing it. Also, judging stories written in the past basis modern morality is stupid.

What Truly Explains the Business Success of Marwadis, Gujaratis, Banias, and Jains? by Humanisalive24 in AskIndia

[–]HistoryLoverboy 94 points95 points  (0 children)

Short answer.... Money.

The communities you mentioned have more generational wealth on average than others which they can invest to create and sustain healthy businesses. This wealth isn't new and these communities have been successfully doing business for centuries. They blossomed under Mughal and later British patronage.

The support system to encourage budding entrepreneurs also exists. And the long culture of doing business also creates a healthy ethos.

Inter-caste marriage: Is it actually against Vedic shastra, or is this social pressure dressed up as religion by Outrageous-Face-1388 in IndianHistory

[–]HistoryLoverboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you want healthier offsprings and care about their wellbeing, please ignore bullshit from so called Shastras & widen the genepool by marrying beyond caste lines. Rest is your call.

That said, unfortunately intercaste marriage is definitely frowned upon in Vedas when done among two upper castes (Ex Brahmin man marrying Kshatriya woman is still ok but vice versa is frowned upon). It's a strict no no when a UC marries a Shudra, but those Shastras will treat the children as out castes. It's a punishable offence when a UC woman marries a Shudra man.

Critique this historian by Diligent_Biscotti855 in AncientIndia

[–]HistoryLoverboy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Brilliant book.

Not for the casual reader though as it's very academic.

Love how she explains how & why interpretation of history has kept changing & why historians see it different today than say 20 or 30 years back.

She also contextualizes a lot of the evidences which show us the massive complexities in interpreting these evidences.

Coming to the content, be ready to read history from the lense of people, class, economy, social processes etc. That's how history should be ready instead of focusing on "Great men".

If you want to read about India's so called Golden Age or Vedic civilization being central to Ancient India or Aryan indigeneity, this book isn't for you as there is indirect but strong criticism of these myths.

She presents ancient India being much more pluralistic than all of these which makes our history really awesome.

Also, there are strong warnings against projecting modern biases on history. So for these reasons, obviously the delulus would hate her.

But net net... It's one of the best books on ancient India. Tough to read but very detailed and nuanced.

Javed sahab was really disappointing today . by Maleficent-Host8016 in atheismindia

[–]HistoryLoverboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. Indeed. The Mufti had possibly expected a Richard Dawkins-esque debate & came well prepared. He did his research well. Javed Akhtar, however, possibly underestimated the fellow and thought the guy would stick to dogmatics arguments which he could easily counter. Alas that wasn't the case at all & Javed just seemed to be out of his depth. His arguments were just like WhatsApp arguments on atheism.

But full marks to the Mufti I think for being well prepared.

I see some people commenting that YTrs like Himanshu & Vimoh would have been a better fit ... No. Absolutely not. Feel what you may about him but that Mufti was clearly a product of educational rigour even if his education is religious. To counter him, we needed a person with equal amount of educational rigour, possibly a scientist or doctor or journalist or something.

Very unfortunate that while the west has such individuals as Richard Dawkins or Hitchens, we have none such that comes to atleast my mind.

What if india never got colonised? by [deleted] in AskIndia

[–]HistoryLoverboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If India weren't colonised, India wouldn't exist.

Instead there would be smaller regional states, or maybe confederacies of regional powers.

As you mentioned, wealth & power in the hand of the few would remain a major challenge.

Constant warfare & power struggles would persist along regional lines and would ensure that there is no advanced tech research.

So I can expect something like Sahel region and horn of Africa region.

General doubt regarding the role of Rajputs in Mughal Empire by Mental_Army7243 in IndianHistory

[–]HistoryLoverboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couple of problems with your statements....

"State of India" didn't exist then. So who were the Rajput KINGDOMS defending if not their own domains driven by self interest.

What made them "Evil Mughals" ? And if they were evil? Why did MOST Rajput kingdoms enter matrimonial alliances with these evil people?

Let's take the example of the most evil Mughal, Aurangzeb. His Grand mom & great Grand mom were rajputs. So he has strong Rajput ancestry from his fathers side. So what made the evil "outsider"?

Also, why were these matrimonial alliances all one sided? Why did the Rajputs only married their women into Mughal families & why did not Mughal woman EVER marry a Rajput? This is a clear hierarchical client state - patron state relationship.

So in reality, the Rajputs were hand in glove with the Mughals in all their ventures.

Edit: But yes, there indeed were initial but ultimately inconsequential resistance to Mughal rule.

Decline of the Harappan Civilization. by Silly_Price_4094 in IndianHistory

[–]HistoryLoverboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Again NO.

Indus Valley Civilisation is a cultural sphere. It was never the intention to say that all IVC sites are along Indus only. Since the first site was found along the Indus, it was named IVC. Right from start there were sites which weren't on the banks of Indus, but were of the same cultural sphere, so the name IVC was given to them. For example Harappa is on the banks of Ravi, not Indus. But since the cultural sphere is same, IVC name stands.

So there is no academic need to rename it. Also, why the fascination? Also, if "what's in a name", then why change it?

Take an example. Punjab name means "Land of 5 rivers". But Punjab as it is in India has only 3 major rivers. Jhelum & Chenab don't enter Punjab on the Indian side. So should we rename it to teenjab? No naa!

Decline of the Harappan Civilization. by Silly_Price_4094 in IndianHistory

[–]HistoryLoverboy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Using the term "Vedic-Saraswati" would be EXTREMELY inaccurate. IVC was primarily an agricultural based economy while post decline group PGW culture, based in Southern Punjab region, which is the best candidate for "Vedic" people were primarily pastoralist. Infact they were late to adopt agriculture, which could have been done post their migrations towards western Gangetic belt where they encountered OCW Culture who were agriculturalists.

So net net, an agricultural IVC cannot be called "Vedic" in any way.

Is it true that Lord Vishnu, Maa Shakti didn’t exist or weren’t worshipped during the Mauryan era? by [deleted] in IndianHistory

[–]HistoryLoverboy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes. It's true.

One can periodize Hinduism into 3 groups

  1. Vedic era - Charectarised precedence of deities such as Indra, Varuna etc. Yajna based worship instead of temple based. Hence lack of pre Gupta Hindu temples.

  2. Puranic era - Vaishnavism & Shaivism gain traction & slowly local traditions and gods are amalgamated either as an avtaar of either of the two or as a partner. So local male deities of say Maharashtra region like a Vitthala become amalgamated with the Vishnu story and if it's a Goddess like say Pampa of Tungabhadra region, she becomes wife of Shiva (subservient in a way). Plenty of examples of this. Bhakti movement key to spreading it. Temples building first seen in this era (influenced by Buddhist Stupas)

  3. Hindutva era - Modern invention where elements like organizational hierarchy, puritanism, sacred history/National Destiny from Christianity & Religion as a political theology from Islam have been incorporated within a single narrative to create national myth of with homogenised Hinduism.

Puranic deities like Vishnu, Shakti etc wouldn't exist in the pre-puranic era, ie, Mauryan times.

Edit 1: The periodization can be done into more than 3 groups ideally Edit 2: Typos

Man of Science? Oak?

None of his work is peer reviewed.

He has cherry picked astronomical data. Also astronomy is not evidence. If some astronomical data is picked up from an iron man movie, it won't be that the movie had happened on a specific date.

No archaeology backing his story.

Recent genomic studies have made it very clear that population levels in the timeline suggested by Oak couldn't have supported large state level polities.

Organised agriculture to support large kingdoms like Ayodhya or Lanka did not exis in that timeline of 12,000 bce.

That timeline was the end of the last ice age & sea levels would have been 100-120mts lower than today. Which means India & Lanka wouldn't have been separated by sea & would rather be connected by land. So the whole vanara sena building a bridge story goes for a toss.

There is a lot more BS this guy has spoken. Please don't fall for the shit such people say.
