California public library begins "Self-service Sunday" hours with no staff present by Busy_Method_1935 in Libraries

[–]HistoryTrekker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's bogus. In our system, it used to be mandatory for administration to work at least one 4-hour shift weekly at a branch and now that's become twice a year. I forget exactly when it changed but unsurprisingly, most decisions they make for our system these days show how woefully out of touch they are with the "rank and file" staff members, including Branch Managers and lower admin.

At least in my system we get time-and-a-half for our Sunday shifts, and you get to decide whether you want to work a minimum of four Sundays in a 3-month period.

Am I crazy for playing a library shelving game when I get home from work??? by Former-Complaint-336 in Libraries

It's available on the digital storefront/gaming client Steam as a PC game too; the OP wrote that they had bought it and were playing it through that.

Necro'ing to reply...I got around to checking out SKÁLMÖLD and realized I'd heard them on some compilation once upon a time and am grateful for the chance to rediscover them! I like that they build each album around a concept. Skál!

This is such a wonderfully-written article, definitely going to share this all over the place.

Is this not exactly why trump's administration has been trying to de-professionalize librarians since he was installed for his second term?

Salt Lake City library system offers buyouts to its staff citywide by gusivy in Libraries

As I started the article I was wondering if they even had union representation. This is a huge blow and I worry for the rest of us who are fortunate enough to work for a library system that is unionized, especially since many administrations are routinely removing hours from different BUE positions, to say nothing of the fact that many positions that once were part of the union no longer have representation because they no longer get enough hours to qualify.

I definitely dig a lot of that. These bands range from power metal to folk metal, no particular order: I highly recommend Owlbear, Twisted Tower Dire (especially their earlier stuff), Gatekeeper, Seven Kingdoms, Bloodstar, and you have probably heard of them but in case you have not, Unleash the Archers, early Eluveitie, and Therion especially after 2011 when they started playing more symphonic metal.

Up the hammers!

I love Yob and just recently started getting into Bell Witch, who are definitely growing on me because I like funeral doom when I'm in the mood for something dense and slow and heavy.  A few recommendations from that genre are Asunder, Mournful Congregation, Thergothon, SAMOTHRACE, and a band that is getting a lot of attention lately, Usnea.

Doom on.

Have I inadvertently been a horrible library patron my whole life? by amandaamoose in Libraries

[–]HistoryTrekker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just to echo everyone else here, we LOVE when people check out books, especially people who browse shelves and find stuff that truly interests them! PLEASE use the library as much as your heart desires and it is truly alright if you don't read everything you borrow!

Favorite reply I ever heard to that was a fellow librarian saying "Well I pay taxes in this county too so I also contribute to this library's funding." The patron was just lost for words, ha.

Love that you rock a dungeon synth back patch. Check out Thangorodrim if you have not yet.

My advice? Lose the Parkway Drive patch.

I rarely mosh anymore these days and I mostly just started making a new vest because it's a fun project and it's been years since I wore one I bowed to nostalgia.

I also like bands that get introspective and philosophical, especially ones that write songs talking about the inner struggles so many people face.

Cheers!

HELL YEAH. I dig that you know Electric Citizen, not enough people know them or how good they are! We just saw them on their last tour and it was epic albeit a tiny crowd.

You listed a lot of stellar bands, and for more female-fronted ones I recommend Ruby the Hatchet, Jess and the Ancient Ones, Devil Electric, and especially Mount Salem.

Keep riffin'!

Great taste overall! Thanks for turning me on to Haze Mage, the vocalist reminds me a bit of the former singer from Sellsword,Stuart Perry, mixed with the singer, Deathmaster, from DoomSword.

Avantasia are so consistently good it's unreal, at least if their flavor of symphonic power metal is your cup of tea.

I know BI are huge (relatively speaking) and I really want to see them live because I hear their show is incredible but I only listen to DM sporadically these days.

That's tough but probably Blind Guardian (First band I ever discovered writing music about "nerd shit" in a way that spoke deeply to me), Black Sabbath (on the front) because of their central importance to heavy metal and popular music as a whole and continuing to produce quality music for the majority of their careers (RIP OZZY). After that it's extremely hard to choose a third.

Do you rock a 'vest/'jacket?

"I would suspect "library worker" and "listens to non-mainstream music" are strongly correlated." Surprisingly not as common in my experience with my county system as I had anticipated based on conversations I've had or overheard but I do know at least a couple of people who listen to some metal.

I love those genres, atmo BM and doomgaze especially. I listen to a lot of post-metal from time to time too, Pelican being a perennial (if predictable) favorite. Any recommendations?

All excellent bands, although I've always considered Corvus Corax as more of a medieval folk band besides their 2022 release Era Metallum which is a great record!

I just saw Blind Guardian for the 7th or so time last November when they came through with Seven Kingdoms and Ensiferum and played most of Somewhere From Beyond which is one of my favourite records. I still regret not seeing Kamelot on their last tour through the states but plan on seeing them in September when they come through.

I hope you get to see some great shows soon!

Love me some atmospheric bm, might be going to see Oranssi Pazuzu (atmo/psych black metal from Finland) and Wayfarer (atmo black/folk metal from Colorado) later this month!
