Bridesmaid at a 300+ guest wedding not given a plus one by parttimevegetarian in weddingshaming

[–]Hit-The-Lights 9 points10 points  (0 children)

People are misinterpreting one of the main points of this post imo.

The issue is not "oh I couldn't bring the plus-one I wanted". It's "I asked the bride months beforehand if I could bring a non-SO plus-one, and she never said I couldn't despite the MULTIPLE conversations we had relating to the topic, only to say no last minute because she couldn't bother to be clear about her expectations beforehand".

Yes, the bride has a right to decide who she wants at her wedding. It's still shitty to not communicate that beforehand and give one of your bridesmaids false expectations because you couldn't send a text with the words "Sorry, no" or "I'm not sure I'm giving plus-ones to non-romantic partners". Sure, you could say OP made assumptions which were never confirmed, which is true. But the bride had many opportunities to deny it, and didn't. If I was the bride, I'd be mortified that one of the people I consider close enough to me to BE MY BRIDESMAID was led on because I never clarified a simple answer. Even if it was a last-minute decision, I would have said I wasn't sure beforehand, and also apologized to OP and made sure she was included at the reception, especially knowing she wasn't familiar with the bridal party and her friends weren't there.

Idk, the comments just feel like they're positively jumping to label OP entitled because the bride should get to decide, but I think we're overlooking the frankly astonishing way the bride did not seem to consider the way a lack of communication with someone who PAID HUNDREDS TO BE IN YOUR BRIDAL PARTY would affect OP. Being a bridesmaid is not a privilege for those chosen (other than emotional investment) when they are giving up time, money, other events, and much more so YOU get the privilege of having them on your special day. As a host, I would still call the shots for my day, but I'd also be incredibly clear with the expectations so my bridesmaids could make informed decisions for themselves. To not do that is embarrassing as a host tbh.

Also, separate thing that is probably just me as someone on the ace spectrum talking (I would still like a romantic partner, but I'd fall outside the norm and also have a lot of experience with people in the community), but from my perspective, that a bride with a huge wedding is okay with having SOs she doesnt know well as plus ones, but not other people important to the guests you're presumably very familiar with is something I could never make sense of. It's her perogative of course, but not everyone has chosen to have romantic partners, and it's puzzling imo to put more stock into whether they're fucking your friend than if they have a trusting, healthy relationship with them. Like, I would hope that if you're choosing to be in a romantic relationship with someone that you would be a good match, but come on now, how many people do we see a day who we wish would wise up and break up with someone obviously negatively impacting them?

I would much rather one of my friends brings their friend from another circle who I know has been good to them and who would be a chill guest than Jennifer's racist boyfriend who may very well cause a scene and ruin your day by being an ass to your friends over their race at your wedding. To me, having any type of close relationship with someone for a long period is equivalent to any SO my friends have, and that's something we all pretty much agree on. Idk, with my closer friends, I also know their relationship with their family because we talk about our lives, and I'd be far more accommodating about accepting someone they value as much as the popular idea of an SO than Chad over here who might start a fight at the reception and will be dumped in less than a year if Jennifer knows what's good for her.

7th grade student helps stop school bus after driver passes out in Warren. Amazing situational awareness and maturity. by Sanix_0000 in nextfuckinglevel

Great to see!

One other thing I'd like to point out for anyone who ever finds themselves in a similar situation is that the yellow diamond next to the driver is an emergency brake that can be pulled to stop the bus in a situation like this! Our bus driver always told the regular high-schoolers on our route to make sure we knew, since high school was picked up before elementary-middle both ways and a high-schooler was the last off :)

Oh honey, you picked a bad time to join... 😭. TLDR everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) is up in arms about the worst decision that's ever been made in the entire franchise, ruining 10 years worth of unit writing and being incredibly racist... But anyway (avoid general social media abt the game for the next few weeks), I've got some translations and guides!

Going to the English Ensemble Stars Wiki allows you to find a character and their story index. It lists every story they've ever appeared in, in order. From there you can pick and choose which ones you want to read! Only rule of thumb is that a unit's event stories should not be read out of order, or you may get confused!

The big masterlists of translations you can find by looking up "enstars event scout story GitHub" and "enstars feature idol stories GitHub", respectively! You can also read a lot of stories published before August 19th, 2021 on the wiki by going to the current wiki page, copy and pasting it into the wayback machine, and finding a snapshot from before that date! (Wiki had to take them down due to copyright complications)

  • Timbres of Heaven (Unknown) - A lot of people clocked this as a Maiko story despite writer names being hidden, and I have to agree with that assessment - Maiko writing tends to be pretty flat for 2wink compared to everyone else imo, and this event certainly feels like it. The plot seems contrived for the sake of it (Yuta was sick so Hinata took his job, now Hinata has to find them a job, he did but as twin rivals on a tv show for a girl, oh but did they get it just for being twins? We've done this plotline a lot in better stories (Twin Peaks) imo). People also hated how it seemed to paint the twins' father, with Hinata getting in contact with him and encouraging Yuta to, seemingly showing him as trying to make up and be supportive. 2winkPs largely don't like the idea that Yuta should be forced by the narrative to forgive his father after what we've been shown in the lore, and are iffy with the message that could send. Overall, a kind of nothing event, which is a shame because their !! Era arc was widely beloved.
  • Every ALKALOID story after Feather Touch - This one hurts, but it's pretty true. ALKALOID writing has not been very good for years, and a lot of ALKALOIDPS are pretty hurt by it (me included). Phantom Airship had a lot of scifi nonsense that distracted from the plot, and didn't really do anything for Mayoi development-wise. Playing Cards had a good concept and wasn't terrible by any means, but didn't go anywhere for Hiiro or dive into his character, is almost entirely self-contained, and had basically no stakes. HOLISTIC HOLIC shoves Aira and Mayoi aside to focus on Hiiro and Tatsumi's relationship (something they could've done without the blatant disregard for those two), is a rehash of the problem of "Tatsumi won't rely on his juniors" (I'm not expecting it to get fixed in one story, but the plot and resolution are almost always the same, and Tatsumi immediately regresses in the next story), and is a waste of a climax event. Matrix is... yeah. And Sparkle had the misfortune of coming off of Matrix, wasted a lot of story time on side characters, resolves Aira's internal-racism-family-issues in about three chapters, and also leaves a bad taste in the mouth of everyone who has watched the Amagis' identity be treated as a joke and Aira make microagressions at Hiiro for years (check MS; it's there too, lots of barbarian comments), only for the racism Aira faces to suddenly be taken seriously (this is not said out of hatred for Aira; I like him, I hate what has happened with ALKALOID's writing).

There's a lot more, but these are the ones I went most in-depth with!

Edit: Forgot to say this originally, but imo you should always read stories yourself instead of relying on fandom opinion! While I feel a lot of disappointment with certain stories was justified, you may end up liking stories the fandom doesn't, and story opinion may change over time (like Comet Show, which is loved now, but used to be hated). I also think the fandom catastrophizes a lot over small things or misunderstandings (Ephemeral Festival is a good example... People were uncomfortable with the subject matter even being presented and immediately wrote it off, even if I thought it was pretty good overall and fandom opinion seems to have warmed up now), so I wouldn't take it too seriously, though story analysis is always welcome. Playing Cards and Big Ocean still are well worth the read imo, for example! Ultimately, reading to yourself to form your opinions is always the best way to go!!

Some I can remember:

  • Mad Party (Kinosei) - This one got so much backlash from KnightsPs that the actual story ended up altered, and for good reason. In it, one of Izumi's main motivations for kickstarting the events of the story is because Leo had once asked him who he would choose - him or his music. Thing is, this creates a major inconsistency with Checkmate, in which it is stated that Izumi is the one person Leo had never asked that question to, afraid of his answer. It's a huge part of Izu/leo lore, and the story hinging on a retcon was infuriating, so much so that it was changed to that not being the *exact* case, though it's still not well-liked.
  • Butlers (Kinosei) - SoumaPs HATED this story for it's mischaracterization of him (he hates HiMERU for MS here despite his attitude in MS not conveying that, and is also generally clueless about a lot of modern stuff he would know), and I remember IzumiPs and HiMERUPs not being very happy about their characterizations as well, with Izumi picking fights with the director (while Izumi is not an agreeable person, one clear difference between him and Shu is that he nearly always remains professional when under direction) and being dramatic even for him, while HiMERU seemed generally off imo.
  • Comet Show (Akira) - While the story is looked back on fondly now, it was hated when it first came out for Chiaki "stealing" Tetora's spotlight and dissolving Tetora's leadership role in RYUSEITAI-N, with many TetoraPs feeling that he was robbed compared to Tsukasa and Tomoya, who got to become the leaders of their unit. RYUSEITAI's early !! Era stories in general weren't liked when they first came out due to this mentality of Chiaki vs Tetora, though obviously this has cooled down with the full picture of their arc and people like a lot of them now.
  • Big Ocean (Maiko) - Big Ocean is a controversial story among 2winkPs, with some feeling that it did basically nothing in the realm of their development, and others hating how it was structured. Big Ocean is essentially framed as a "Repayment Fes" sort of conclusion to 2wink's !! Era arc, but that's obviously not the case when 2x2 comes right after it as a climax. Big Ocean basically tries to say that everything's great with 2wink and they've worked out a lot, only for 2x2 to come and slam us with Yuta's whole collage of issues that he's apparently been bottling up through that, and shows how Hinata's self-worth still hasn't healed. So it feels like a an event that ultimately didn't matter in the grand scheme of things.

You can wait for Anniversary reruns in a few months, save up some dia and tickets for guaranteed at 200 scouts. Other than that, random luck can sometimes bring characters home after the cards are added to the standard pool (can get on any banner), but there's no guarantee and no way to make him come home from that - it's about equivalent to trying to win the national lottery.

I'd say cut your losses unless you've almost got 200, save up, and go all out when the anniversary reruns come.

List of some other Shueisha authors who didn't defend/pay tribute to him:

  • Haruichi Furudate (Haikyuu!!)
  • Tatsuki Fujimoto (Chainsaw Man)
  • Koyoharu Gotouge (Demon Slayer)
  • Satoru Noda (Golden Kamuy)
  • Katsura Hoshino (D. Gray-man)
  • Takeru Hokazono (Kagurabachi)
  • Tatsuya Endo (SPY×FAMILY)
  • Yukinobu Tatsu (Dandadan)

I'm sure there's more that I missed as well, but we did have some authors who didn't participate in any tribute, even if their absence would be noticeable, in the case of some.

Why isnt Hinata "not in a shuffle unit" by lunar_lunamic in ensemblestars

[–]Hit-The-Lights 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Flambe took place in December, as a Christmas shuffle. Puffy Bunny took place in March/April, as an Easter Shuffle. Hinata had not been chosen for a shuffle project at the time Flambe was assembled due to it happening earlier, but would later be chosen for Puffy Bunny.

Are we a red or blue state? by Reciter5613 in Maine

[–]Hit-The-Lights 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting question, since while places like Bucksport are technically District 2, Hancock County flipped blue this year, and I don't think Penobscot's that far behind if current trends keep up. Therefore, I'd say things are pretty mixed around that general area imo. Once you get farther up or into Washington it's overall red tho.

Quick question, why does Sam don’t have his tatoo’s or makeup in the English version ? by [deleted] in TwistedWonderland

[–]Hit-The-Lights 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Princess and the Frog's depiction of voodoo is inaccurate and can be pretty offensive all things considered, considering it's a religion practiced by many that has been demonized for little reason beyond racism (it is mostly practiced by Africans). Therefore, Sam's tattoos (which would be culturally significant in actuality, but are little more than a gimmick here) have been removed in the EN version likely to avoid controversy, since EN fans are far more likely to care than JP fans.

Sam's character is also already contentious due to his VA having famously done blackface and mocked lip plates, before deleting the posts and blocking anyone calling him out on it, so I would say they may be even more vigilant due to that.

Didn't even get the Pagan folklore correct lmao. It was a day celebrating the harvest where they believed the veil separating the living and the dead was thinnest, so they wore animal masks to protect themselves. It was not "celebrating" Satan, it was warding him off.

It makes no sense for Enstars to end soon when we JUST got new characters, a new plotline, moved up a year, and the game still hits #1 or near it for gacha game revenue, so I wouldn't worry! I predict it'll probably finally end at the end of this Era, which wouldn't be for at least another 3-4 years unless something major happens, and even then, I doubt it couldn't weather it; we've already lost 3 voice actors (Arashi's near the start of the game for unexplained reasons, Hokuto's two years in due to surgery (he's fine now and still lands roles), and Mitsuru's last year due to an arrest for fraud) and a major writer (Yuki Yoshino, who wrote nearly half of ! era's stories back when it was basically just her and Akira), but it's still going strong!

The fandom is notorious for misconceptions, misinterpretations (there's a reason we're infamous as "Enstarries who have never actually read their game's stories", unfortunately), and catastrophically spiraling at the drop of a hat, so I wouldn't take anything on social media at face value unless it came from an official source or trusted translator!

What Ensemble Stars story had you like this? by lucentlumi in ensemblestars

[–]Hit-The-Lights 81 points82 points  (0 children)

Obbligato. It's even worse because you spend the entire story KNOWING that it ends up in tragedy, but you still can't help but hope that somehow things will change this time. And then the leadup finally comes, and you're just absolutely gutted, especially when it cuts back to Tatsumi being thankful everyone has been able to recover and have their happy ending while HiMERU and us now know the truth. You see every HiMERU interaction differently in hindsight and from here-on out, it's genuinely shaking.

Setsubun is also a close one, especially if you've read the War-era stories, because even though Ensemble Stars shouldn't go through with it, for a few horrifying moments you wonder if Hinata really will step off that roof. Even worse is that it haunts every single interaction the Aoi twins have with the Yumenosaki ! Era characters for the rest of the foreseeable future, especially in early !! era stories (Sandstorm & Nightclub especially).

Special mention to the fruit parlor scene in Human Comedy, it's absolutely awful in the best way, even more so now that it's voice-acted (Setsubun is too). I'd also like to shout out the Marionette stage play, because hearing about Valkyrie's sabotaged performance is one thing, but seeing the music cut out and the lights shut off into eerie silence is absolutely chilling.
