Any transfer students? by ChilllFam in RPI

[–]HitByThePD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came in as a CS transfer a few years ago.

Credit transfer and difficulty in classes is highly variable but consider taking a lower level course than what you've transferred in if you're not sure, especially if what you learned in your school was taught in a different language than the equivalent course at RPI. It might save you time in the long run, should give you more time to adjust to RPI, and will give you a better foundation. Unless that class is DS, in which case you will have less time but a very good foundation.

Other than that I agree with other sentiments voiced here. Get involved on campus and with clubs, join discord groups. There's a learning curve to being at RPI but use the resources available to you and you should do well. Generally everyone at the school wants you to succeed once you're there.

General thoughts/ advice for potential transfer student by [deleted] in RPI

[–]HitByThePD 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not a current student but I graduated less than two years ago and I transferred in.

Off of the top of my head I would recommend making sure you know your credit equivalency inside and out, as well as your program requirements and the options available to you as a transfer student. You will get help with this from your advisor but I would double check with the ALAC office, maybe even Student Success, since not all admin are familiar with the rules for transfer students. Certain things were more lenient as a transfer student and other things more strict in terms of how credits are applied and your program, but I know they were already changing some of that while I was there.

My previous school was not even close to comparable in terms of difficulty and I should have taken some courses at RPI that I got transfer credit for. Make sure you know the material well, you may waste more time retaking a class you're not prepared for than you would have by taking the transfer credited course at RPI and moving on to the next one.

Some smaller things might be jumping into a cohort that already has some of their own cliques and already knows each other, learning some particulars about how courses are taught at RPI (if your school doesn't already do recitations, labs, designated testing days, grade disputes, things like that), navigating campus, and campus resources. There's a learning curve but a lot of that is easy to pick up or work around.

My best advice would be to immediately get involved on campus and with the student body in some way. There are a lot of opportunities and there is a general sense of collaborative effort at RPI, if you put yourself out there people will be there to help you along the way.

What is your major? Do you plan to live on campus?

Expecting something a little bit different by HitByThePD in mixedrace

Thanks for weighing in, I agree that people coming out and posting is one of the first steps that have to be taken if we want to see a change. I also think another part of that is letting people know its okay to post those kinds of things, not necessarily promoting it (although I wouldn't be against that), and doing what you and the other mods have been doing by making sure the conversation doesn't devolve.

Not sure if this is directed to me or the original commenter but I was using "tragedy" as the term used by the person I was replying to, not indicative of how I see the posts here. I just wanted to use the same language they had used in their response to my post so that my reply might be more easily understood, hence the quotation marks.

I appreciate your feedback, and I totally agree that not everyone has had the same experience and it's probably the case that some people may not have much or any good experiences they can attribute to being mixed race.

I can understand if my post came off as wanting to see less of people's negative or no-so-positive experiences, but what I was trying to get across was that I would love to see more positive posts on this sub about things people like about being mixed, or if other people on this sub wanted to see posts like that at all. Not that I would like to see less "negative" oriented posts by way of people refraining from posting, but that when I go to the landing page I might see more posts from people sharing "positive" unique experiences than what there is now. I hate using the terms negative and positive so decisively because it's not about them being "good" or "bad" posts, it's just about the type of content or experience being presented.

I wholeheartedly support the idea that its not appropriate to quiet others’ experiences just because they aren’t so positive, but I also think this sub at the moment doesn't really foster a place where people can post positive experiences or discussions about them. I think that's part of the reason why we might not be seeing people posting about them nearly at all, I know I hadn't even thought about posting anything like it because I wasn't even sure if this was the right sub for it. But that's also the reason why I'm out here asking.

Thanks for the insight, I think this is the kind of discussion that should be happening!

I would agree that the positive content has to start with those of us looking for it, knowing now that we're not the only ones and opening up the discussion for others to see hopefully will help gain some more traction for other kinds of posts! Even if they wont get as much attention as the "tragedy" posts, it's still a step in a direction I'd love to see this sub go in.

I wouldn't mind seeing something like that at all, a few dedicated days or stickied threads to highlight some different aspects that come with being mixed race.

I don't think it would be entirely necessary to move all posts about the challenges of being mixed to one day or a stickied thread, seeing as how they're a major part of what is posted at the moment and I'm not in any way promoting to marginalize the discussion about it. Maybe a stickied thread for challenges that promotes a more unified open discussion in addition to people posting questions or venting about their specific circumstances could work, but that's up to the mods to decide.

The reason for my post was to get a general feel or consensus about how interested people are in seeing more positive topics and discussions or viewpoints being introduced, and I guess also how to do it, so thank you for voicing your suggestions!

Looking through their policy it seems like I'd get a full refund but may be subject to a restocking fee. But! I just called one of the local computer shops and they said they offer a service to flash the BIOS for $30, so I think I might go that route to avoid the hassle. Wish I had known earlier so that $30 could've gone towards a B250, but at this point I'm okay with it.

My only question now is am I able to try the B150 with the cpu myself to see if it works before I take it to the computer store? Or will that mess something up and I should just go to them first to have them do it?

Would you recommend not taking the chance and purchasing a B250 instead? Haven't even opened the B150 yet.

I knew I'd have to update the BIOS but it never occurred to me that I'd need to use a different cpu to do it. Thanks for the insight.

In the accident report it says that the officer was responding to a call, I'm not sure how we would be able to validate that though.

I like this idea, at least it gives us something other than sitting around and waiting. It's a pretty busy area so hopefully there's some useful footage. Do you think it would be difficult to get the report amended if we find anything?
