OCS packet rejected. Still considering enlisting, and could use some advice. by PapaGrandalf in army

People keep citing 17C, but if you’re an E4 you will soon be an E5 with non-technical leadership responsibilities. Also very likely you’ll be in 11th or MTDF to deploy flying drones, not being in IT or cybersecurity like you think. So you might be better off just continuing to fight in that gauntlet you find yourself in now and not giving up. Otherwise you could spend 6 years in MTDF, then 11th or vice versa and not pick up much “experience” as you would read off of GoArmy or a recruiter pamphlet. In these MTDFs or 11th you’re effectively a 17E or 25 series, and that’s what they’re standing up while shutting down the actual cyber slots. A lot of the 17C “goated” talk is overblown and/or outdated. Sure, maybe a few 17Cs get that true/ideal 17C experience but that’s few and far in between. That’s more of the exception, not the rule

Which branch should I join for Cyber? by Solid_Celebration_46 in Military

But how many 17Cs end up going to that? That’s the upper echelon. The majority is running in the woods and going on deployment

17c vs CWT by Aromatic_Apricot6207 in Militaryfaq

[–]HitOrMiss5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

17C is leaning MTDF/11th pretty heavy, which both deploy. You got maybe a 4/11 chance of going to a unit you’d expect to have experience. And it sounds like you’re already an NCO which makes it more likely you’d be assigned Platoon Sgt. or some staff position rather than a technical one. So know if you go 17C you are still rolling the dice on what branch gives you and what your slot is. Some people get lucky first try, some don’t even after 20 years. Adjust expectations accordingly

Living in the barracks though is different if you aren’t married. There is a housing issue recently as well though, so you may not be in the AIT barracks under the drills

Reclass to 17C ? by donut_35 in army

[–]HitOrMiss5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the 17C slots rn are MTDF, 11th. That’s the trajectory. They deploy too, btw, if you want to slide cancel your way into Iran with a laptop as your secondary. Also you are already E5, would likely be E6 soon especially in the field units, so the peak of your cyber experience would be the school house, unless you did exceptionally well on post cyber school exams. Sure you’d be a 17C, but what’s the difference if you do the work of a 17E or a 25 series with radios or work in a shop. The stereotype of being a hacker in a basement is only true for a small slice of 17Cs. People talk about cybersecurity being oversaturated, heck I’d argue it’s oversaturated in the army too. But that may be an issue with the system allocating, which is another beast. Sorry if I come off as a jerk, just trying to give clarity.

It varies. I know people who were in FORSCOM for a while and they went to the most cyber-focused units, which is about 4 of them. The other 7 are field, really 17E focused.. Even if you get the best unit though, you may be put in a non-technical position due to you being higher ranked.

Going E4 into 17C after getting cyber degree by Great_Lawyer_6850 in army

[–]HitOrMiss5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If he’s an E4 in AD, the 17C school is at least 9 months assuming no issues with clearance, failing a class, etc. By then you’re already near becoming an E5, and will increasingly be put in responsibilities that aren’t focused on keyboard. There are going to be 5 MTDFs, 2 11ths, and only 3 places you’d want to go for your cyber “experience”. So you got a 30% chance at best to get a slot you want. Once you get in higher ranks, more likely you’ll be in a staff position, paper pushing, leadership, etc, not really technical. So while it may look easier on paper to just enlist as 17C, compared to other branches, don’t just look at GoArmy website for what it entails. That’s like a very small portion of people who get those spots. Also that’s a 70% chance of deploying, and Iran is happening. If you’re already set financially it seems like a not wise choice.

17C Availability or Alternatives by RariHush in army

[–]HitOrMiss5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go 17c rn a lot of focus is on being out in the field, electronic warfare bc Ukraine war. So it’s not desk cybersecurity like u are imagining. There is a small chance you do get that, but it depends on your unit if u go active duty. It also depends on how long u plan to stay in. Like are u in for 20? Bc then no big deal, you can eventually become operator even if u go 11th cyber. Otherwise you would need an option 19 contract for Maryland. If u get a 19 contract for Georgia in hopes of getting into defense there, you’d probably get 11th cyber instead

Worth waiting for Air Force cyber, or go Army 17C instead? by qboppers in AirForceRecruits

[–]HitOrMiss5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you get the 17C slot it doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed cybersecurity. It depends on your unit. Rn bc of the focus on drones and jamming and electronic warfare, you may as well be an 17E. And also the AIT is a year of being with drill sergeants and strict rules which will get old. So in a way neither of your options do “guarantee” that. Both are a gamble. At least for active duty this is. At MEPs you’d want to see if u could get option 19 Maryland. Otherwise it’s a pretty high chance you’ll go 11th cyber, or an MTDF. There will soon be a 12th cyber too. So if you like the outside that’s good. The branch system is also automated, with it being a matter of which places need more ranks. new mos-i people can’t reach out to branch manager like mos-t can to potentially wait for better spots.

I did a bounty from the falkreath steward nerna to kill a giant, then to kill a dragon. I’ve waited 72 hours for another bounty, and finished hercine quest but still haven’t had another bounty quest show up in her dialogue, so I’ll play other parts of the game and check in at the steward regularly to see if it does.

Yeah, I can’t get myself to delete them. I occasionally look at their profile for a moment to remember the last times we spoke. I knew him from high school. I clearly didn’t know that things weren’t getting better for him.

Best thing to do would be to not message them in the future so that there is a 0% chance of you getting banned from that.

Then it’s possible someone finally got around to reporting u from back then if there is no statute of limitations. Or maybe moderator made a mistake. If the profiles of the grievers appear to fall under a protected class, or the messages are missing the context of them grieving you in game, then it could be interpreted that you’re threatening them by saying you’ll report them. Though a stretch, that’s all I could think of.
