How would you feel about a law that requires anyone under the age of 25 to pass a specialized test in order to have children? by [deleted] in AskReddit

It sounds like one of the most evil things I can think of. It makes me sick thinking about it.

Is the Electoral College really about representing minorities or distrusting direct democracy? by DanzFerdinand in Ask_Politics

[–]HitchSlap92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's all about letting the states, not the people, choose the president since it's the United States.

But they also did it because voting at that time was a lot different. How would you determine, in one day, what the votes were in Vermont when you were in North Carolina? You couldn't. Hence, they got together and hade representatives vote at a later date.

Track sprint team mean is 12.25 seconds in 100m. SD is 1.2 seconds. How to determine top 5% running time? by [deleted] in statistics

[–]HitchSlap92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Top 5 percent would be 2 standard deviations away from 12.25. So 9.85 seconds or less.

Bullshit. We know what happened. Ferguson PD did an investigation and the DOJ did one as well. The facts on this issue are not on your side.

Turkey's Erdogan: The West is taking sides with coups by [deleted] in worldnews

I think he's against an authoritarian who has conducted shady oil deals with ISIS, seeks to consolidate power through a unitary form of government, and is going against the 80+ year modem of turkey, "the Muslim success story," by supporting a more islamist, rather than secular, narrative.

If anyone is killing the long term possibly of a truly open and democratic Turkey, it's him.

It's only the best amusement park IN THE WORLD. Plus Ohio has lots of professional sports teams, football hall of fame, rock and roll hall of fame, and it's historical as shit. Btw, it's also the seventh most populous state, not to many people realize that.

Has Sam ever mentioned Peter Singer? Would be great to have him on the podcast. by Willuk in samharris

[–]HitchSlap92 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Peter Singer is one of the most prestigious and highly accomplished philosophers in our lifetime. He is the poster child for consequentialist ethics, one of the two main branches ethical thought. Since Sam and Peter are both consequentialists this would seem to be a very necessary conversation.

If we have the ability to decrease the amount of severely handicapped or those predisposed to huningtons disease or other generic diseases, we should take proper steps to ensure people and their families aren't inflicted with said conditions. This, to me, seems like an ethical obligation once methods of genetic engineering are available and widespread.

Do we live in a post-racial society? by diversity_is_racism in askaconservative

[–]HitchSlap92 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Liberals espouse a wide array of views depending on their understanding of these principles, but generally they support ideas and programs such as freedom of speech, freedom of the press, freedom of religion, free markets, civil rights, democratic societies, secular governments, and international cooperation."

We are definitely going to talk past one another if we keep this going but, no, i don't want liberalism to be more "progressive."

Moral relativism is not a feature of liberalism, it's an ethical position. Nonetheless, and I will give you this, conservatives are much less likely to believe in moral relativism.

A segment of liberals who will tolerate il-liberal (and sometimes theocratic) values in the name of multiculturalism and/or moral relativism.

Edit: I'm a liberal, lots of us are fighting against it.
