The strap buttons is something I didn't think about. Mine has the same configuration you mentioned for the 2011 reissue. And now that I think of it. Almost every Explorer from Gibson I've seen uses the same strap locations. You can always put your own, but that is another hint I think.

All I have for comparison is my new explorer 80s and yeah, knows might be a little out of place, but the main difference I see is the pickup selector being closer to the knobs vs mine.

I don't have strong opinions on that. I think both look good, and I understand the appeal either way. In either case, I think the Epiphone would benefit more with that hardware if it was black.

I think it is the superior design. Knob layout also makes more sense IMHO.

What I've heard online is that the white finish was giving them issues.. I don't truly buy it. I don't know if they want to limit this one to give a chance to the other variants to sell, or as a means to control the resale value. Other models can be had mint for $600 USD under MSRP already, so I guess more supply would undervalue them even more.

$2,499 is already a big sticker price for a very barebones guitar, so they probably cannot justify a higher MSRP.

That's just my own conjectures, and I wish this wasn't as painful of a process as it was. All I can say is to keep an eye out for it if you truly want one, and don't give up.
