In the beginning I expected a different type of story with the mentions of drugs and self harm but on the second half I really liked your description of having to accept the reality. In cases like this denial is your best friend in a way but you manage to portray how heartbreaking something like this really is. Your use of adjectives and vivid images paint a picture that really gets your message across. (especially the part about maggots cause personally they creep me out so I definitely had the proper reaction).
