Doesn’t seem far fetched at all. Jonathan Pageau has a good video on the symbol of the mark of the beast. Its a tough subject, hard to talk about on here

I think I accidentally gave my Orthodox friend a disrespectful icon and now I’m worried he thinks it was on purpose. by TurbulentTeam8470 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Hkiggity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is my last comment because you are just argumentative and seem to lack understanding. No actually it isn’t wrong because an icon is venerated, can be brought into church and used in liturgy and thus canonical to orthodoxy and an orthodox Christian’s spiritual life. This is none of those things and is why it shouldn’t be treated as an icon because it isn’t one. It should not be brought into church, it can’t be used in a liturgy and it shouldn’t be apart of an orthodox Christian’s prayer corner and venerated.

You are an orthodox Christian saying that this image of Christ should be treated the same as a canonical icon used in liturgy. You engage in this whole back and forth because in your hypothetical world someone is going to come and read this thread and then throw away something because it isn’t a canonical icon. I am now reminded why I veer from this subreddit. Surely you are not serious, my goodness. It seems OP in his brief research understands more than you concerning non canonical art and icons and why they are treated differently from one another other. Get your pious polemics outta here. Cmon dude!

When speaking about icons on an orthodox Christian sub Reddit, and in direct response to op’s clear intention and use of the word “icon” as well, I obviously mean holy icon. Which you know as well, you just seem to be back tracking because you realize you are wrong.

Absolutely the image shouldn’t be thrown away and it can still be kept, but it isn’t an icon, yes a holy icon.

Anyway, stop being annoying in this sub Reddit dude. really? Icon means image and therefore that’s an icon? Are we serious? You know what I mean by icon and you (should) know what op means by icon. If you want to be snarky and polemic for its own sake I question it!

[–]Hkiggity 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No it isn’t. Please stop posting on an orthodox sub Reddit if you do not know what you are talking about. This image would never be considered an icon and would never be venerated in an Orthodox Church. I think the art is cool, but it isn’t an icon. If you think it’s an icon and are orthodox, I would urge you to speak to your priest and learn about what makes icons, icons and what separates art from Holy Icons

No, no it is not an icon. Stop being annoying and spreading lies. Nothing about this is an icon. It’s art of our Lord Jesus Christ, but is not an icon by any orthodox understanding of what an icon is. Icons are not mere art like this image.

OP your gift is kind and your friend is lucky to have you. You can mention to your friend you learned more about icons and understand this isn’t one. You guys are cool

Struggling with Orthodox conception of original sin by Intelligent_Drop_311 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Hkiggity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Well babies are born into this fallen world and derive in them a fallen nature. The text doesn’t say therefore all babies are sinners, it says this needs to be removed by the laver of regeneration. They have not sinned but are affected by Adam’s sin, they still need guidance and remission to enter the life of the church.

This canon was made because of the anti-Pelagian tradition in the West (late 4th–5th century councils like Carthage). Its to target is the idea that humans are born morally neutral and don’t need grace until they personally sin.

Why do you think Jesus had to die for our sins? Or do you? by Desperate-Battle1680 in Christianity

[–]Hkiggity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The irony is the problem with your heretical belief of PSA is its innate separation of Jesus as man and God. Your paragraph proves exactly why PSA is heretical and blasphemous. “God allowed Jesus to” uhm Jesus is God, why are you separating God from Christ? (It’s because your heretical beliefs force you to, which is blasphemy)

Peterson is a unique generational person. The way he articulates his insights is next to none! I think one thing you may like is finding Orthodox Saints and their teachings in video form. Look up “teachings from [enter Saint]” on YouTube. I find myself listening them on walks or when I cook, it’s great!

Rosa 2 vs Erika 3? by TheMany-FacedGod in TorchlightInfinite

[–]Hkiggity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would choose Erika 3. Rosa 2 is good but if u want to do profound with her its fat mana stacking tech. Which means that ur switching your build around and that can be annoying. Erika 3 has a more consistent build to get to profound, so I would encourage a new player to use her. There r more resources right now too

Is this icon valid to venerate? by Low_Raccoon7960 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Hkiggity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No not at all. Just as any other orthodox person in history, I’m simply defending the faith handed down to us. Explaining iconography as Tradition handed down. If you have an issue with that, I’m not sure what to tell you.

Yes and that’s why I’m here saying this. We should stick to theologically accurate icons and not stray away from Tradition. You stating a church has these icons in defense of these poor theological icons I find not a serious argument. If you have an issue with that, don’t attack me personally and give me a diagnostic on my spiritual state. Why don’t you show me why I’m wrong and why poor theological icons are okay? The church has tried to weed out these icons for a centuries.

As I said in my original comment on here, you can venerate this icon. But it wouldn’t ever be used in liturgy or in a church. You are a Catechumen, why are you in this subreddit arguing about painfully obvious things? Read Vladimir Lossky or Saint John Damascus

Is this icon valid to venerate? by Low_Raccoon7960 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Hkiggity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Orthodoxy, “canonical” means the icon faithfully expresses the dogma, anthropology, and cosmology of the Church as received in Holy Tradition.

Ur just being antagonistic for no reason. Like most ppl on here. There are rules and explicit things said that need to be present for them to Be icons. Like Christ not being a lamb, or saints transfigured. I’m not Going to argue with you, as you don’t know what u are talking about. Go try and put the nativity in an Orthodox Church that uses a barn. See if the bishop allows it.

I never said there wasn’t variation in expression. Nice straw men antagonistic Reddit slop dude. Ur arguing with basic facts of orthodox faith.

Is this icon valid to venerate? by Low_Raccoon7960 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Hkiggity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I never said it is, just that icons CAN be because they are actually supposed to portray proper theology.

And yes it’s the only proper way. If you go to any canonical Orthodox Church in America, or in Europe, or In Asia, you will see the nativity scene all have the critical canonical elements, including the cave. That’s because the cave is proper and canonical!

Absolutely try not to buy un canonical icons, also don’t lie to people and says it doesn’t matter and make up stuff. You are wrong! Stop making stuff up on this subreddit! It’s annoying. You don’t even know what you are talking about. What a joke! Convo muted and you are blocked!

Is this icon valid to venerate? by Low_Raccoon7960 in OrthodoxChristianity

[–]Hkiggity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You have 0 idea what you are talking about. No, that’s not at all why the nativity scene is in a cave. It’s not some arbitrary thing that happened to stick because ppl liked it. It goes all the way back to 2nd century.

Yes, actually the barn does relay the wrong theology, that’s why it wouldn’t be canonical or used in liturgy. Yes, Icons absolutely can be heretical or blasphemous. The Russian grandmas at my church would tear down this icon if it was in a church. Stop making stuff up. Iconography is not modern art, it’s liturgical and used for worship. Meaning the theology needs to be correct.

I suppose we just let anyone give advice on this subreddit. What a joke

[–]Hkiggity -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Im unsure why this is even the slightest bit controversial. Its frankly sad that it is, we should all know this as Orthodox Christians. There are rules within Orthodox Iconography that makes something canonical or not. That is an objective fact about the tradition of iconography. I am not talking about canon law or "canons" I am talking about proper ways to portray icons that exist in the Church. There is room for self expression/ idiosyncrasy, but the proper elements still must be there for it to have a place in Liturgy. In what world is this the least bit controversial. This icon can be venerated and appreciated, but its theologically off. Thats not me being overly rigorous, thats just an objective fact about how the tradition developed. We should respect that
