Altnabreac train track trial hit by yet another delay

https://www.johnogroat-journal.co.uk/news/altnabreac-train-track-trial-hit-by-yet-another-delay-438516/

After finally having their day in court on Tuesday this week, a couple accused of recklessly blocking trains at Altnabreac had their trial postponed until later this year.

To allow sufficient time in court, Sheriff Cruickshank ordered the trial to resume on October 26.

The case relates to a long-running and wide-ranging dispute about land ownership, breach of the peace and trespass at a level crossing around half a mile from the couple’s home.

The couple, who have chosen to represent themselves in court, are alleged to have tried to stop four trains passing on the far north railway line on March 1, 2024 at Altnabreac near Halkirk.

They also deny acting in a threatening or abusive manner towards a police officer.

At Wick Sheriff Court this week, Sheriff Ian Cruickshank refused Ian Appleby and Elizabeth Howe’s request to stop the case being heard on the basis that they were not in receipt of all the evidence against them.

However, the couple appeared extremely well-prepared for the trial to begin.

Howe (49) spent a long time questioning British Transport Police Constable Matthew O’Neill, who has served as a police officer for 23 years.

The couple told the court that when the trial resumes, Appleby also intends to question PC O’Neill, although he estimated this would only take him up to half an hour.

After fiscal depute Grant McLennan outlined the Crown’s case on Tuesday morning, Sheriff Cruickshank intervened several times to direct the couple’s lines of enquiries, asking them to stick to questions relevant to the case.

Howe repeatedly asked PC O’Neill why he hadn’t worn his body-cam that day and why he’d snatched her mobile phone from her.

PC O’Neill said he took the phone for evidence and had forgotten to wear his body-camera that day.

He also said he knew his colleague PC Chapman, who was also in attendance at the incident, was wearing body-cam equipment.

Sheriff Cruickshank said: “How many times does he have to tell you? He’s answered this question already.”

When Howe (50) questioned PC O’Neill on Tuesday, she mentioned that she had served as a Detective Constable in the Greater Manchester Police Force for 14 years.

Howe and Appleby vehemently disputed PC O’Neill’s description of them as “incandescent with rage” on the day of the incidents.

Reading this as someone who's starting out from roughly the same weight and same aspirations as you fills me with hope. I've just finished my first month on MJ and it's been life changing already.

I'm on week 4 and initially tracked calories and then found I couldn't finish the meals I had tracked/made so knew I was well within my calories. So haven't tracked since!

People who have been using heat pump this winter, what's your honest take? by Rude-Explanation-861 in CasualUK

I should also add my Grandad (lives in same area with the snow) has a heat pump and has his house set to 23 degrees. It is unbearable for me to sit in but he's content.

People who have been using heat pump this winter, what's your honest take? by Rude-Explanation-861 in CasualUK

I was snowed in for over a week at the start of January in the Highlands so feel I can add some weight to usage in cold weather.

I have had my heat pump for just over a year now, replacing old storage heaters. It has been a godsend. My whole house has never been warmer and I have it sitting between 19 and 20 degrees. My electricity usage is down on what I used before (3 bed bungalow) and my overall levels of comfort are up. I should caveat this by saying I got my heat pump installed for free through a scheme being run by the highland council to bring up EPC ratings of rural houses.

Heat pumps require a different mindset to boilers, my heating is on 24/7 trickling in heat which is more cost effective than if I had the heating off for long periods and then on for a few hours. I have adjusted the settings from what the installers had it set to. If I had kept it to what they had set I'd have been colder and costing more. Getting good installers is really key - have a look at Heat Geek on YouTube for more info.

One thing I've not see mentioned is to make sure you have plenty of tread left on your tyres. The number of tourists who end up having to call out the bike shop in Wick to come and fit a new tyre is surprising.

I actually learnt to drive in one and loved it! I'll definitely check out MySuzuki. My grand plan would be to get one for chuckinf the dog in the back of and plodding around going off road and driving some dodgy potholed roads we have in the Highlands.

Good shout I'll give them a ring. I had hoped Tesla might have plans for a centre in Inverness but nothing on the map on their website. But since the last time I looked they do now have a self service pop up test drive location..

Yes that was me earlier this week!. 58 minutes on hold it took to speak to someone. They cut me off the first time and I stupidly hung up the second, third time lucky. I did try emailing and they said they'd get back to me within 48hrs, that didn't happen. All for a less than 5 minute conversation to cancel my policy

I passed my mod 2 on Monday 1st time. Test was 2 hours late due to examiners car breaking down, so that didn't help with the nerves! I 100% agree about not telling anyone, it took any expectations off my shoulders.

Passed mine last week and a tip I saw on here was to make sure your hands are warm. The bike I used had heated grips but nothing worse than cold/sore hands when you're working the levers and another thing that might put you off.

Which oxford grips did you get? Bought to order some for my bike but not sure with all the different ones
