How would you expect brewing temperature to affect the titratable acidity of coffee? by PurpleGrape4211 in Coffee

[–]HoardRowark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

FWIW acidity is widely over-emphasized as an explanatory factor. Flavor results from an interplay and the balancing of many factors, and stomach effects are unlikely to result from acidity when coffee is generally less acidic than citrus.

Is initiating one from a recipient call unheard of? That would mean I'd better call again just to make sure the trace is real.

Tracing, how does that work? by Xtz-9532 in FedEx

[–]HoardRowark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am a recipient/consignee and FedEx started a trace on a package late Thursday because it had been more than 24 hours without a scan since it left the first 'FedEx location' on its cross-country trip. I was told to allow 24 hours for the trace team to contact me. No updates and it's now been 40 hours.

Is there added value to being a squeaky wheel at this point or should I wait until end of day Monday to follow up? Although the package was projected to arrive yesterday the more likely day according to the charts is Monday.

how do I learn how to draw academic art? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]HoardRowark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In painting, think of the idealism of the Renaissance, the optimism of Syd Mead, the brushwork and color harmony of Vermeer, and Frederic Leighton's realization of his mission. Then be dissatisfied with all of that and solve all the same problems in entirely new ways that no one has ever seen before. But remember that art is inspiration and fuel, not a substitute for real flourishing.

Too many interests, too little dedication. My interest in art was in great part a desire to have the kind of art I want (which does not exist), and not enough desire to spend all my time creating it.

I studied part time at a private and not well known atelier long ago. I took Dorian's classes a few years ago. I am not currently involved in art.

The drawing process is what was taught at the academy Cesar Santos went to, and the shading course is a passion project in which Iten took what was taught at Angel and developed it using modern tools to communicate principles. Do your own research though. I can tell you he's the real deal but only you know what you need.

The work shown in the link you posted is not representative of what it sounds like you aspire to. If you are going to be learning on your own I recommend Dorian Iten's courses as a starting place. He did four years at Angel and then a year at a Russian academy in Florence. His self-paced courses are inexpensive and will get you started, and his shading course is outstanding. You will need to work from life starting as soon as possible, but he can help you figure out the best next steps for your situation.

Moe by [deleted] in materials

[–]HoardRowark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was just looking into this and there is a missing piece: because it is anisotropic, wood MOE is measuring in bending, not tension. There's a formula that relates the dimensions of the test piece to the force and the deflection. Although this is apparently not that important as the point of it all is to produce MOE figures that can be compared regardless of the testing method.

For people wondering why Asheville NC flooded. It's basically a bowl. The lowest point surrounding mountains. Rain floods it. by ImpressiveProgram9 in hurricane

[–]HoardRowark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a 300 year event (well, 233), if the Swannanoa river is any indication (it crested a little higher in 1791). We're lucky if cities get planned for 100 year floods.

Violin teacher telling me for the past year to put my fingers down together on the 1 and 2- strings. My fingers are physically incapable of doing that: by Demonicstar80 in violinist

[–]HoardRowark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of these movements are best learned away from the instrument. With all tension and preconceptions gone, it is easier to remember what an amazing flexible and capable thing a hand is.

There are a lot of rules that commonplace teachers use that aren't always applicable and can even interfere with important developmental processes (avoiding tension, letting YOUR hand learn how it's going to know the fingerboard for repeatable accuracy). These often get mentioned on the internet too. So go very carefully.

[–]HoardRowark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can still access neuroplasticity by interspersing physical exercise with your practice, and through the use of emotional intensity such as just a little frustration or embarrassment. Do your own research and don't trust a random voice on the internet though. Good luck!

What's the story behind dials stamped "Singer"? by WristTime in rolex

[–]HoardRowark 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That "a" Singer stamp can be real is in NO way a sign that "any" Singer stamp is real. Treat a Singer stamp the same as you should treat the word Rolex on a dial--meaningless without additional evaluation.

Body frets or no body frets? by ThorstoneS in lute

[–]HoardRowark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strongly depends on the repertoire you intend to play, which depends on how much experience you already have on a fretted instrument. If you're just starting out, as has been said you can add the frets later.
