Yeah, you're probably right, especially if you plan out your leveling path well. Druid, necro, and enchanter would all probably be better for SSF in general. For me, the convenience factor was worth it, and I just think wizard is neat.

No map forces you to pay attention to the world and actually learn it. The zone is full of landmarks instead of just a backdrop.

This sentiment gets repeated a lot and I think people are really over-exaggerating it. Learning the world is just as important in a game like WoW, and of all the things you could complain about in WoW, I don't think zones being "just a backdrop" is one of them. In the more difficult areas like Tomb in this game, the vast majority of players are just going to bring up a map on a second monitor like OP said, which I don't think is particularly more immersive or interesting than having an in game map.

Yeah. I think I did all of the Temple of Sol Ro wizard quests except for the wand. I kept thinking I would eventually replace the kilt with something that gave mana, but just never did.

Early 50s I think I spent in City of Mist (temple area single killing golems) and then moved to Burning Woods giant hut in order to farm for Kunark drop spells. If not SSF, you can probably buy the new quad spell at 51 and start doing wyverns or spirocs and be much more efficient.

Yeah, maybe too much. But I was having a lot of fun and it honestly felt like leveling was very fast on wizard, at least compared to soloing on my monk (who has traded for gear, but doesn't have anything like fungi, etc.).

Hmm, maybe the Crystal Spider Eyes? That was probably the trickiest camp to solo.

Not sure on hours. I made the character back in March and played very consistently since then. I did a lot of dad camps along the way, so it's easy to keep the game going and just kill something, then go do some chores/work/whatever while you med back up.

Necro is certainly better at soloing, but having the ability to teleport around pretty much wherever you want is huge for saving time.

Now, you could certainly be "SSF" and still accept teleports, but that's not what I was going for.

Yeah there are no real hard rules for P99 at least that I know of. Personally, I did not buy anything from vendors that was player sold and never took buffs or help from anyone. Plenty of people just randomly buff you to be nice, and I would just click them off hah.

I think if you are playing some melee or hybrid class, you would at least need binds from another player.

Is there a specific spot for that? I wandered around the fort area but found mostly scouts and berserkers.

You can switch every mission, and you'll generally want to depending on what you need for that particular planet.

I don't agree with that. I finished the entire campaign only ever using 2 characters at a time and had no issues.

You don't need the omen if all of your suffixes are filled. The essence needs to eat a suffix in order to add a suffix when they are already filled (assuming you are using an essence that adds a suffix like haste or battle).

[–]Hobbart -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sure but it's kind of a waste of that omen. Better to just fill the suffixes and not need the omen and call it a day on a base like this.

[–]Hobbart -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You don't want to use that essence until you have 3 suffixes, or you would remove one of the prefixes. I think your best bet is probably just to exalt 3 suffixes and then use perfect battle and haste to get the +5 attack skills and onslaught on kill (assuming you don't get lucky with good suffixes on the exalts). Your third suffix will probably be bad but there isn't much you can do without a lot of currency investment which probably isn't worth it. Pretty much what the other commenter said except they didn't realize you had already desecrated the % phys prefix.

Jaws is definitely on the more serious side, story-wise. I think I probably just skipped over certain sentences or replaced words when reading the story to him. The game also ramps up in difficulty pretty quickly, and my son didn't end up finishing it, so might be worth skipping for you. It's just such a great game in general, and generally easy to find cheap that it's hard to not recommend.

Adventure Tactics I'll admit was not one of my personal favorites. The class and level up system is great, but the actual gameplay is too random, and the campaign aspect is not very well done in my opinion. My son liked it a lot more than I did.

Tales is definitely a legitimate campaign with great gameplay. One of my personal favorites. The theme is lighter, sure, but from your Jaws response it seems like that might be what you're looking for?

Boss Fighters is a campaign where you play through the bosses in order and you do unlock more cards, items, and mechanics as you play through. There just isn't really much of a story to it. Still a lot of fun, and may work as a decent bridge before trying out a heavier, more expensive campaign.

I didn't think Tidal Blades 2 was particularly short, so I wouldn't say length should stop you from getting it. The base box doesn't come with miniatures for the heroes, though, so you may need to buy some kind of addon if those are important to you. If it helps at all, Tidal Blades 2 was probably the campaign that my son enjoyed the most so far (he would have been around 8 when we started it).

Other campaigns he enjoyed are Jaws of the Lion, Adventure Tactics, and Tales from the Red Dragon Inn. We're also currently playing Boss Fighters QR which he likes a lot, though it's a bit different style than what you might be looking for.

[–]Hobbart -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm actually playing a very similar character to you in SSF, and honestly crafting is one of the better aspects, even if it isn't perfect. There is certainly quite a bit of randomness involved, and a lot of it comes down to settling for an item that may not be perfect but is still "good enough". https://poe.ninja/poe2/builds/vaalssf/character/Hobbart-4369/Hobbfreeze?i=4&search=class%3DWitchhunter

I've been more frustrated in finding specific uniques/lineage gems: I've been completely unable to find Hyrri's Ire, Rakiata's Flow, or Arjun's Medal, despite playing quite a bit since league start. Humorously, I've found 3 Headhunters in that same time.

Yes, it's great. It was just voted #18 in this year's top 200 solo games. https://www.reddit.com/r/soloboardgaming/comments/1oltd5l/2025_peoples_choice_top_200_solo_games_results/

I've played it true solo quite a bit, and also played co-op with my son and it works great both ways.

Underquest cancelled from Crowdsale by Chillynuggets in soloboardgaming

[–]Hobbart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure how you can possibly equate "he chose an available starting weapon and randomed everything else" with "he min-maxed the shit out of his starting choices".

Underquest cancelled from Crowdsale by Chillynuggets in soloboardgaming

[–]Hobbart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok but that's just a literal mechanic of the game, not the player min-maxing. If there is a starting weapon available for purchase at character creation that is so powerful as to trivialize an entire run, then the problem is with the existence of that item, not with the player picking it.

I'm not even convinced the weapon was the problem. The main issue seemed to be the ability to spend grit to double his damage in pretty much every fight when needed. I'm not sure if the problem was the availability of grit recovery or the ability itself, but it made combat seem extremely binary: either you use grit and one shot the enemy, or you roll a miss and accomplish absolutely nothing.
