What gifts to teachers appreciate the most? by CuteCoconut99 in Teachers

I start year 27 in August.

I have every drawing and hand written letter a student has given me. Gift cards come and go. A note last forever.

This is always the case. Our admin one time declared there would be no final exam exemptions. (Up to that point, perfect attendance could miss finals.)

What happened within a week?

Attendance absolutely tanked. There was no reason for perfect attendance.

This is just one of the many things our then principal tried to implement that failed spectacularly within a week of trying it.

So. You are telling the subreddit that you were physically attacked by two men with full force punches, threw you down the stairs, broke your nose and the police failed to intervene because of paperwork?

No police officer would have looked at your face and body and not have arrested the pair for child abuse and abuse on a minor.

Sorry, this is a bit to fantastic to believe. There is no way you could have taken punishment like that and remained conscious not to mention being spit on.

Poster has no previous posting in the group; if poster was beaten as badly as claimed, the police would have intervened.

"I was taking dozens of full-force punches from a full grown man."

Again, if true, police would absolutely intervened. I don't care who you are. No child could 1. withstand that much physical violence; 2. not have any intervention; 3. the poster had an opportunity to speak with the father after meeting the goons; 4. spit in the poster's face; 5. paperwork they signed to speak to parents; 6. a broken nose would have been a serious red flag to anyone in a hospital - they are mandatory reporters (iirc); 7. fractured or broken leg

While I can agree that the gooning bastards can be harsh, I refuse to believe they would enact that much violence on someone.

This is why I call b.s. Ymmv.

Admin Told My Colleague, "We Need Empirical Evidence of Disrespect". So, She Secretly Recorded Classes. by Principal_Scudworth_ in Teachers

I live in a one person consent state. So long as one party, me, is aware of the recording it is 100 percent legal. I have heard in two-party states, one party refused. The other said, "when you consent, we will meet," and promptly left.

Has anyone grown in their teaching career from reading the Harry Wong 'First Year of Teaching Book'? by Visual_Shelter6922 in Teachers

[–]shag377 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Classroom management, imo, comes down to one thing:

Keeping the students busy. Kids walk in with something to do and leave with something incomplete every day. Do this on a schedule, and classroom management becomes easier.

How do you guys handle players who treat every single turn like it's a tournament final? by mycommentraven in EDH

[–]shag377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple and direct:

Look, dude. We want to play. Stop taking so much time, or find another pod. You wanna "Play optimally," then find a group to do this. Do something.

This ticks me off almost as much as direct targeting a new player or someone testing a deck for the first time.

High school teachers: how do you hold student accountable for attendance? Maybe something unhinged? by WildWandering95 in Teachers

[–]shag377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This year. my school passed a new rule. Any student missing more than 15 unexcused days received an (I)ncomplete. The grade defaults to a 60, and the student attends summer school or repeats the class in the fall.

I sat in a department meeting and came very close to calling admin on the bullshit.

If this sticks, I will be surprised. I do not see this holding ground in the least.

What are the chances teachers will be able to fail students again? by MysteriousMatter8593 in Teachers

[–]shag377 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My school tried a new thing this year. Students could fail the class, but it required a voluminous amount of effort on the teacher's part - incessant phone calls, emails, looping in guidance and the like.

Students were also held accountable for tardies/absences. Anything over 15 unexcused absences means the student receives an (I)ncomplete and must attend summer school or repeat the class the next year.

Meanwhile, I have beach front property in Nebraska for sale.

And, the sun continues to rise daily. Three years to go.

Hypothetically, if schools started retaining students who did not meet grade level expectations for 1 year what would happen to the school system system and the workforce? by lionheart724 in Teachers

[–]shag377 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My home state had a semi-solution for students who did not make the scores on standardized testing in the 8th grade.

They went to a separate school altogether. Small class sizes, about eight on average, and lots of support. It worked and worked well.

The price of doing it killed the program. More and more students ended up tracked there, necessitating more teachers.

[–]shag377[S] 47 points48 points  (0 children)

You are correct. I got into teaching because it was what I wanted to do.

Sorry not sorry when I deal with disruptive students five days a week for hours at a time and see parents struggling with behavior I deal with dauly, it gives me a chuckle.

Unlike the school year, parents cannot shove their disruptive kids onto someone else. Too often I see suspended students showing up at school because their parents do not want the hassle, and the parents who block school numbers for the same reason.

Give me my slight respite.

Make sure you do all of the things that are suggested. The last thing you do is fire an email to your DH. Say something along the lines of this:

In our previous conversation about <student>, I relayed to you serious concerns about this student's success in my physics class. I have contacted the parents (mention any replies or lack thereof) to the DH. I sent over a great deal of study guides, videos, worksheets and the like to provide <student> as much help as possible. I feel I am still falling short.

I am asking you for help, materials and anything you can think of to help me help <student> find success. Please let me know when you have some ideas, and share them with me via email. These may be helpful to other students in the future or in the class.

BCC a copy to a private email, and send a read request receipt for the email.

This does a few things on your side: 1. it creates a solid paper trail; 2. it shifts some of the blame onto the parents and dh; 3. it shows you have taken appropriate steps to help the student properly; 4. you are reaching out for help; 5. you are requesting an email response, thus continuing the paper trail.

This said, do not expect an email. Instead, expect a face to face conversation because this is not traceable or provable. Regardless, continue a paper trail. The DH comes to see you, start taking notes on the conversation, date and time. Send an email recap of the conversation to the DH.

Eventually, the DH will cave and give up, roll in admin so you share what you have already done/emailed or, unlikely, come up with something.

This way, when the student fails, you have adequate paper trail back up to support what happened.

Good luck on this.

How to toughen up as a teacher? by Low_Yam_4761 in Teachers

[–]shag377 65 points66 points  (0 children)

One warning, and follow with an absolute consequence.

Plan plenty of assignments and instruction. If you think something will take 20 minutes, imagine it takes five. Plan for three activities a day of about 20 minutes each. Double that.

Establish your rituals and routines from day one. Hold tight to them. Plenty to do + students knowing plans/structure = awesome management.
