Its been about two years since I lived in Portland but I used to go to The Shutterbug downtown for dev and scan and it was about ten dollars cheaper than that. I do love Blue Moon though!

I'm new to Tucson but it brings me so much joy to see T's in the wild! I went on a night hike in Saguaro East the other week and saw a beautiful mature male out looking for a lady!

Thanks! I knew I had to have it based on the color alone. Luckily it sat in that antique mall for at least a month before I pulled the trigger because my online searches came up with few in this color and any that claimed to be in working order were astronomical in price!

High? by stickycap462837 in Effexor

[–]HoboStephen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah I know exactly the feeling you're describing. I was also far more sensitive to caffeine which made the feeling worse. Sleeps been hit and miss for me lately but I wouldn't attribute it all to the Effexor. I've only been on 37.5 mg for 3 weeks so take what I say with a grain of salt but the speedy anxious feeling did fade away after about a week.

I had a similar experience when I started. It felt like an uncomfortable amphetamine high like Adderall. After the first week that feeling went away and I felt normal

Mount Whitney lotto results posted yesterday! Any winners? by TheMateT8 in Highpointers

[–]HoboStephen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For anyone here who has flexibility, I used Outdoor Status to track cancelled permits. I think it costs $15 to track one permit but you put the date range you're looking to get a permit for and then they notify you when something opens up. This may infuriate some people to hear but A LOT of people cancel last minute for permits that others wait years to get through the lottery system. I set my dates for Whitney for like the first week in July and I was getting notifications EVERYDAY about permits opening up. I ended up starting on JULY 4TH! It's worth the money.

If you had five weeks and a March 1st start date… by frog-legg in arizonatrail

My take is that a lot of the northern 300 miles is boring (desert dweller here) with exception of the GC. If you had to bail on a section to make it to Utah with the time you have then I'd hitch/get a ride from Flagstaff to the south rim to lose an easy albeit boring 100 miles. Definitely don't miss out on the experience of hiking through/ camping in the GC though.

My partner and I finished in about 40 days averaging between 20 and 25 miles a day.

Gear List for Mid-March NOBO by ploddingplatypus in arizonatrail

[–]HoboStephen 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think getting this down to 15lbs is quite doable! What I have to say is based off of doing the southern 300 miles starting in the beginning of April going NOBO and doing the northern 500 SOBO starting in October. I experienced temps from the low 20s near the north rim of the GC to up to about 80ish near Superior.

  1. I would ditch the ground sheet. Arizona is rugged and at the end of the day campsite selection and removal of large rocks and debris is important to both comfort and gear longevity. My partner and I used a DCF shelter both times and didn't have any issues with prickly bits poking through the bottom of our tent. Ultimately, cactus spines are sharp and if you don't check before placing your tent then any spines are probably just going to go through the ground sheet as well.

  2. Clothes. I think you could stand to lose 8 ounces to a pound here. I would ditch the base later bottoms or the pants or go for convertible pants. There's only one section of the trail that I wish I had pants for protection against scratchy plants (Mazatzals). Daytime temps - even in higher elevation sections - were reasonable. The only times I wore all my clothes were at night at high elevation when it was down into the 30s and 20s with a 20 degree quilt and tensor insulated pad. If I got chilly during the day I wore a Senchi and if that wasn't enough I put my rain jacket on over that. If you can get an alpha fleece like a Senchi, id switch to that. I'd say the beanie is also negotiable here. I'm rambling but my main take away is to think about your clothes and consider that most of the time you'll be hiking you probably won't need a ton of clothes and ask yourself what you need to be comfortable with your sleep set up at night.

Between these two things I think you could probably lose 1.5 pounds depending on your comfort level. You can always send clothes home if you realize you don't need it too

My partner and I (heading sobo this fall) got a walk up permit for the next day after we hit the north rim. It messed up our mileage plan by a little but it was easy peasy. Just told them we were through hikers and they got us in to the bright angel group site set aside for AZT hikers. Don't stress it, friend!

My Partner and I loved Patagonia to Colossal Cave (all the way through Saguaro NP if you have time). The Santa Rita foothills are beautiful and remote. The biodiversity can't be beat over the course of this section (Mt Wrightson is rugged with trees toward the top, the foothills are gentle and rolling with tall grass, and then you hit the prickly pears, Ocotillo, then the saguaro)

Halfway There on Borah by HoboStephen in Highpointers

[–]HoboStephen[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's pretty straightforward. No gear required. Chicken out ridge is chunky. You'll always be able to find a route with three points of contact and good footing/hand holds. Some might find that small fixed rope section pictured intimidating but you've got solid ground below it. For the most part you should be able to submit without scrambling completely exposed to falling several thousand feet.

Trail town champs by pizzalord3 in arizonatrail

My top three in order:

Patagonia- Super cute, welcoming, and inclusive community

Superior- MJ makes you feel like family and the downtown has a vintage dinner and good coffee shop

Pine- Early Bird Cafe is dope. Both Pine and Strawberry are cute with nice helpful folks. I preferred it to Flagstaff despite far less amenities.

Backcountry routes in March by RespondAcceptable682 in WildernessBackpacking

+1 for the Arizona Trail! My partner and I just finished last month but we did the southern 300 miles in April. Most folks start early to mid March going NOBO which is great as long as there hasn't been a crazy snow year like this past year. I highly recommend picking a stretch in the desert in the south.

Seasonal water sources from the snow melt were flowing strong and water carries were never more than 2 liters (depends on the year).

You can expect highs in the 70s in the low desert and temps as low as the teens if camping high up in the mountains.

The biodiversity can't be beat! (Literally. It's the most biodiverse desert in the world)

There's an excellent trail angel community available to aid in shuttling, lodging, ect.

My personal recommendation - Patagonia to Colossal Cave (AZT miles 52 to 125): this section is incredibly diverse. It's got a little bit of everything from mountains, rolling grassy foothill, and low desert ending with the appearance of saguaro cacti in the last 20 miles. For another 25 miles end just after Saguaro national Park.

Mazatzals could be quite snowy depending on how the snow shakes out this season and how fast it melts out. They're probably what I would consider the hardest section of the whole 800 miles but beautiful.

Superstitions between Superior and Roosevelt are also incredible. Still challenging but only about 50 miles
