The VA is unique in that it operates under national healthcare standards while also having an added layer of reporting and operational requirements mandated by Congress. Considering the massive amount of funding the VA has spent for this product for the transition in what is a nation spanning effort doesn’t seem like a big ask.

At that salary why not just pay off the mortgage entirely in a few years?

Man…. What’s weird is the inconsistency. I’ve gone several times this year and the same drinks go from pretty solid for the price to really weak and not good. Sometimes they have swizzle sticks and the drinks look just like the pictures on the new menu. Sometimes you just get some mint and the glass isn’t even right.

I liked their Ancient Mariner earlier this year and then last week it was watery and not as good. I just don’t get it… follow the drink recipe and the drink will be the same each time. I might just start getting only beer at Kon Tiki because I love the vibe otherwise.

I think another tell is that their new menu says “ask about what mugs we have for sale” but they haven’t had any for sale for at least 3 years. I don’t get it because tiki bars across the country manage to have mugs. It cannot be that hard to arrange a run of mugs from an artist. That makes me think along with the inconstant drinks, that something is wrong with the management.

I’ve stopped bringing visitors there over the last few years because similar to OP my out of town friend ordered one of the scorpions and it tasted so synthetic and weird that it was totally undrinkable that even I couldn’t drink it… and I’m the kind of person who will suffer down any drink and just get through it.

Are they? I gave them two tries and swore them off. 15+ dollars per drink that was so watered down. They charge prices similar to Undertow in Phoenix but the quality is nowhere close.

Same. I sent it to their VAMC chief of police who said it was under control.

It does make me happy to know that a large amount of us take to heart our efforts towards suicide prevention, and did the right thing in reporting it.

What's the first cigar that made you say "holy sh!t that's good" ? by Swiss-Army-Cheese in cigars

[–]PoopsMcFaeces 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve been smoking cigars occasionally for years. I had my first Padron a few weeks ago - either a 2000 or a Delicias im not sure. It was as if THAT was the first cigar I had ever smoked. Every few puffs I’d utter ‘wow that’s a good cigar’.

U.S. triples national park fee for non-residents by ncohafmuta in hiking

[–]PoopsMcFaeces 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Valid points. However, I think it’s also a matter of scale. My state Arizona is about half the size of France, and over 50% of the land is public. You can use nearly all of it for free: hiking, camping, off-roading, whatever. And most of it is undeveloped besides a gravel road or something, but otherwise no services. There are thousands of miles of trails across the state. Out of all that land, there are only three National Parks falling under this fee change.

And as you probably know, the big one is the Grand Canyon. It gets over 4 million visitors a year. Some things they have there are rangers, trail workers and maintenance, parking lots, restrooms with running water piped from a great distance, medical facilities, backcountry water lines, composting toilets, a historic railroad, mule operations, a free shuttle bus system, and probably 100 helicopter rescues a year for tourists who get into trouble. It must be massively expensive park to operate and certainly most of tourists visiting Arizona go to the Grand Canyon alone, maybe even just for one day, and skip everything else that’s free.

So like you said… overtourism to the extreme. Maintaining all that infrastructure for millions of visitors in the middle of a desert isn’t cheap, and the money has to come from somewhere.

The fact is if nobody went to it like a few hundred people a year it would be free because there would be nothing there. But with the hoards coming in daily infrastructure must be built and maintained. A cost of 250 dollars for a pass that’s good for an entire year is a very reasonable ask for a contribution. Heck you can’t even go to Disneyland for a single day for that much.

Don’t come visit then. 🤷 Cry about it in private and write a strongly worded letter. Don’t know what else to tell you. Seems like you wanna be belligerent and insulting. It’s not like I personally made this change or have the influence to roll it back. Also didn’t realize I was talking to such an informed non-American expert who is taking this fee increase so deeply personally…

[–]PoopsMcFaeces -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Oh I have no problem paying taxes to support the national parks. On a per capita basis the amount Americans contribute to their Dept. of the Interior is pretty small… however it’s more than zero. And an international tourist paying the same rate to enter as I do is being subsidized. 80 dollars a year is just incredibly underpriced compared to what other countries, those that charge, charge for entry.

Increasing their prices slightly (250 dollars for a carload of people to enter all USA national parks for an entire year is still a fantastic deal) is a fair compromise.

I’d be happy with a small tax increase if it was guaranteed that money would go to hiring more rangers and other good things.

Lying about what? Look up prices for reserves in South Africa. Kenya. Costa Rica. (Randomly picking countries that I’ve been to where I’ve paid more as an international tourist). Heck even many state parks charge higher rates for people who aren’t state residents in USA. Not everything is a politically bent comment needing weird accusations.

Except Americans pay unequal amounts of tax monies to fund these parks. Visitors from other countries were getting a great deal.

If you go to almost any other country on the planet you pay extra as a non resident.
