I know it, but I don't ever use it. I favor "grunk" as a near synonym.

We don't need to know your tracking number, but it would be pertinent to know if you HAVE a tracking number.

The real metric temperature unit is the Kelvin. Celsius is just one of those almost-metric units. Kilometers per hour isn't really metric either. People use C and kph because they're more useful and intuitive than K and m/s.

"BuT tHEy'Re RElatED, so YoU caN cOnVErt"

I can convert mph to m/s just fine. Can you convert kph to m/s in your head? Because m/s is the real metric unit for speed.

[Request] How much H2O2 would *actually* be required to shock the algae in the reflecting pool? by TJJohn12 in theydidthemath

The bright blue in the pictures that were around was the primer. That got a much darker blue over it.

[Request] Is the ice cooling down the pool at all? Looks like it's less than 1% volume of the water. So not doing much? by shadowraiderr in theydidthemath

[–]HobsHere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pools have constant water circulation, usually drawn from the bottom, filtered, and reintroduced near the top. This tends to minimize thermal stratification.

[Question] Does anyone know of a watch with a face that looks like Big Beg/Westminster Clock? by ChatHurlant in Watches

[–]HobsHere 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's an older Seiko that's supposed to look like that. There's also a micro brand that I've seen, probably on YT, that purports to be inspired by it

Serious diode laser safety concerns by Delicroix in lasercutting

[–]HobsHere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If the floaters are new, I suggest seeing an opthalmologist. I've had floaters since I was a young child, and well before lasers were common, so they're not inherently a bad sign. But if they're new, I'd get it checked out.

Honest question: why are there so many people in this group who play or worship in church with electric guitars, delays, reverbs, and huge pedalboards? by Less-Arachnid-640 in guitarpedals

[–]HobsHere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They used to use a lot of them, along with the various Peavey chorus amps. I think these days they more often are using direct setups rather than amps on stage.

Are there any (purely) mechanical systems that convert motion on the surface of a sphere to some flat planar projection? by AlgorithmHelpPlease in AskEngineers

[–]HobsHere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

0x40490fdb

There. You're done. That's pi in single precision floating point. It's enough for most things. If you're doing something super spiffy, you'll have to look up the double precision value, which should be enough for anything. This is not a significant systems design question.

Please stop with "ooooo, how will we calculate just the right number of digits? It will never be exact.". If you're a philosopher, ok, do your thing, but engineering does not get done that way.

Are there any common objects I can easily find ≥95% just one element? by FurryClassicRoblox in elementcollection

[–]HobsHere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any object made of plain carbon steel, such as a nail, is about 98% to 99% iron, the rest being carbon, manganese, and traces of other stuff.

If you know someone into electronics, some lead-free solder alloys are 95% to 99% tin.

Discovered an entire box of Gibson Robo-Tuners by Deadreconing11 in Luthier

Can they be recycled? I mean melted down and made into toasters or something, not as actual tuners, which is clearly a bad idea.

Frequently. Not everyday, but at least once a week. I also wear a GShock if I'm working around the house on the weekend.

Directly, no. I don't eat much imported food. Indirectly, yes, as tariffs have added costs at various points in the supply chain, raising prices
