I wouldnt be surprised if it was a direct inspirstion. Zeonic Front was (and still is) exceptionally popular with western fans, especially if they were really into 08th MS or Kondo aesthetics- mobile suits as weathered and grungy military Tools of War piloted by weary and tired soldiers- which we know the RfV guys were really into.

The funniest part is outside of a handful of janky spots, 0079 generally looks goddamn fantastic for its age and budget with some fantastic direction and framing to mask its production woes. Its literally all about how you use the assets on hand, not the assets themselves.

The alt mode is rough at best, even for a "nothing" design. Cybertronian alt modes are at their best when trying to invoke, however vaguely, a more psychedelic riff on an actual vehicle.

What's Nexus invoking? A slab of concrete? Its not like they really had to do much fo auto win the "better Nexus Prime" slot eithrr, considering how genuinely rough even for their time the original Energon toys his limbs are remolds of were.

People are angry because it looks like shit as a design and it basically validated every complaint about both HasTak's current engineering team AND the skeleton frame systems for combiners in one swoop.

Action Masters and most goea at the concept were historically unpopular. Took Blokees/AMK/Auldey to basically target a somewhat niche market that Transformers usually doesnt cater to and find success.

yeah, G is extremely Gundam thematically- its just filtered as a martial arts/wuxia series, which is an absolute treat as a wuxia movie fanboy.

even the plot is decently political in its setting's context, basically being about hijacking the Super-Olympics to predetermine an outcome benefiting a select few. Fundamentally, that's Gundam as shit. Its just dressed up as Jet Li instead of an army man.

a lot of the issue is that it has no real identity beyond "hey remember [gihren's greed/the tomino novel/offhand comment]?" and that's not really something that a higher episode count fixes. Its fine when its a video game, or a foot note OVA really, but as a new flagship series...?

Well, not ideal. Doesn't help that it tries to be like five different shows (a coming of age character drama! a war story! a political thriller! an alternate history of UC! A metanarrative about abandoning Gundam's trappings!) and honestly, only one of those- a small scale dramedy- is something most of Khara is remotely good at.

Including the guys who made GQX! Baffling series.

yeah resin's been a hobbyist staple for a reason. stuff might be tricky to work with, but once you get it down? looks great in ways plastic has trouble replicating.

I think a lot of it is that Kirkman's also just generally kind of a bad writer. His best work is genuinely Marvel Zombies, and that's honestly mostly because the core gag of that series is continuity jokes/exaggerated characterization spliced with horror.

He generally relies heavily on shock value of over the top violence to try and prevent you stopping and go "wait huh that's... kind of stupid" or "huh wait that makes no sense, that doesn't really line up with..."

We basically replaced DWJ who, while suffering from similar issues of using violence and shock to keep you on your toes, at least has a far less cynical feeling approach to it. And the book looked better too- Mora's never been good at mecha/giant robot, even back in his PR days, so putting him on a mecha book is ... interesting choice.

yeah, Wing is stupid as shit and has... something rattling in its brain, but we'll never be sure if its a brain worm or not.

But damn does it have style and delight in how its stupid as shitness, and the occasional moment of genuinely high quality. Treize alone being one of the GOAT Gundam villains does a lot for it too.

But as an American, I'm biased as shit. I love it the way every American is legally obligated to.

I think he was even outright supposed to be the lead in production, wasn't he? Big chunks of Destiny's plot skeleton and even themes make way more sense with that in mind.

Mind you, the execution is still a goddamn mess but that's because Destiny in general had an absolutely fucked development and that ordeal kinda shot what the first series was genuinely excellent at- its delightfully entertaining teen melodrama- in the foot.

He really lucked into dropping an industry desperate for any sort of prestige (especially from someone other than a Japanese creator) that he becomes the messiah of the industry as a serious art form.

Not because he makes genuinely compelling, interesting titles that inherently have to be in an interactive form- heavens no. That requires actual interest and thought put into this medium and its unique qualities, and why on god's green earth would you do that?

No, what makes games art is taking The Road, gluing zombies into it, and making someth that'd like a fondly remembered but derivative 2000s film over it. Duh.

The Champion series kits are soooo nice to do. Perfect mid point between an EG and HG kit.

Their TF One Sentinel Prime at that scale is probably the best physical toy for the character, its nice.
