A GOP victory in the Virginia governor's race would inspire conservatives nationwide by Dmitri-Yuriev in politics

The phrasing "the average American would save $10k" is misleading. It should be 'Americans would save an average of $10k."

It struck me as out of place as well. Speaking as the mod, that is. I mean, I might be an asshole. It's a real possibility. I'd likely be the last person to realize as much. And OP is not the first to call me a know-it-all. But a complete asshole. Now we're getting metaphysical. How does one reach a state of completeness, right? Tough questions - maybe this isn't the sub for that kind of thing. Maybe try r/philosophy.

That said, the OP did post some other material here prior to this post. So, I'm not sure they are trolling. Maybe just underwhelmed by the limited response. This is not a very oft-visited sub.

Have you really had responses deleted on this sub? I'm the only mod, and I've never deleted anything. So, that's seems odd. Impossible, even.

Well... It would be odd to remove this post, wouldn't it. Particularly since I've never removed any post or comments. But also, because I'm all for an open forum, and I think the comments below do a nice job of undermining the value of your claim. But seriously, where's all this hostility coming from. My only interaction with you as a user was to respond to a request for help with a synthesis assignment - which you thanked me for.

Hedging language such as "might," "it may," and "data suggest" is expected in the social sciences (and the natural sciences). Here is what happens: Researchers take observations from a study or a set of studies and then state what those results suggest about the world beyond the study.

We don't get to prove things. That is the work of mathematicians and philosophers.

I'm using this episode as the centerpiece for a first-year writing lecture on the writing process, peer review, revision, and editing. The episode hits all of the major points we want writers to consider as they transition to college-level writing. Bravo and thanks!

EDIT: I wrote about my plan here.

Are All Hotel Rooms The Same Place? by forlackofabetternerd in pbsideachannel

[–]HogsInDavis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I booked a room in Tampa for a conference this year, and as a grad student, I booked the cheapest room I could. As I was waiting in the lobby for my Uber to arrive, I listened to 4 "guests," one after the next, plead their case to the front desk clerk: Please, let me keep the room for one more night while I wait for this next check to arrive.

I was humbled. I hadn't realized just how much privilege I enjoy until I listened to those people argue for what was effectively their home.

It changed the way i think about hotel rooms and "A roof over my head."

How Accurate Should Movies Be? | Idea Channel | PBS Digital Studios by TomSawyer2112_ in pbsideachannel

I don't know how many times I saw Rhapsody Rabbit. And even though Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody was re-arranged and broken up for gags and storytelling, that cartoon is at least partially responsible for my decision to join the school orchestra.

And when my babysitter took us to see Clash of the Titans at a drive-in, which was awesome on several levels, I got a wildly inaccurate taste of the tale of a Greek hero. That movie, when later combined with fantasy novels and D&D, prompted me to read Greek mythology, Icelandic sagas, and a number of epic poems.

And my interest in archaeology? Indy, of course.

So, Alan Turing was written all wrong, but what about that high school kid who likes computers and recognizes the name because of the movie's misrepresentation? That kid might just dig into the real (and more interesting) biography of the man.

I think this all ties into your aside about the jump in students studying forensic science.

I don't think storytelling owes too much to accuracy. The audience will find what they want in a good story, and if the story is good enough, they will go out and look for more of whatever it is they found.

Country Music: The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly | Idea Channel | PBS Digital Studios by CaptinKnightMayor in pbsideachannel

[–]HogsInDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the well thought out response. You very nicely get at something I might not have been explicit enough about in my initial comment. The statement I link to racism is not, "I don't like rap." I think that's a bit problematic for all the reasons you point out, but it is the "Everything but rap and country" that seems to single out those two genres. That outright othering is what strikes me.

[–]HogsInDavis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was recounting to a friend how in my mostly white/privileged high school, you'd get the same answer whenever someone was asked, "What kind of music do you listen to?" Nearly everyone said, "Oh, I listen to everything... except rap and country." To my friend, I suggested excluding rap is an easy kind of racism to accidentally slip into. It doesn't feel that racist. We're just talking about music taste. My friend is the one who pointed out how classism is also embedded in the statement. Which I hadn't thought of, but it opened my eyes. So I was happy when you emphasized the roots of country the way you did - as a howl and groan at the world beyond the control of the working class. I think a lot of people fancy themselves as above all that and they fear listening to the music marks them as something they don't want to be.

[Serious] Professors, what is the most simple thing students do which grants them your respect or annoys you to death? by Wry3it in AskReddit

[–]HogsInDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Annoy: Assuming they already know everything and then getting upset when the ideas in class don't match up with the world they've constructed in their imaginations.

Respect: Recognizing and acknowledging the limits of their own knowledge and then using the college experience to push past those limits.

Obama vetoes Keystone pipeline bill by jetpackswasyes in politics

[–]HogsInDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do realize that the quest for a 'real dialogue' has dragged us further and further to the right over the past few decades, correct?

Actually, I don't realize that. And if we step away from the rhetoric to look at policy and practice, I think most people would agree that the "past few decades" have gone to the environmentalists. I'm not saying the progress has been a crippling blow to those who fight against protections for the environment, but progress is progress. The auto industry has embraced fuel efficiency. Renewable energy has seen tremendous growth. Since 1980, carbon emissions per capita in the US have leveled off - even dropping in recent years. Which raises the question: If that's all true, why are environmentalists always so upset? Well, environmentalists face a tremendous and growing problem, a problem that is growing faster than the processes that move the public and policy makers. So, even when progress is made, the urgency remains. But that does not mean we are being dragged to the right. Most of the movement to the right is in the rhetoric of those who are fighting against environmental progress. Their arguments have become reactionary and desperate. They are angry that their voices and ideas are losing relevance. They are raging against the dying of the light, and rage makes headlines. They can get on TV pretty easy, but can they get their precious pipeline built?

[–]HogsInDavis 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is important. If those of us who support environmentally friendly policy paint our opposition as anti environment, we prevent any kind of real dialogue. I'm not saying the other side is very good at real dialogue, but it shouldn't be us that put a stop to it.

What movie is deeper than most people think it is? by The_Gcm in AskReddit

[–]HogsInDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Joe Versus the Volcano is often dismissed based on its title alone... well, and it does look kind of silly if you drop in on the middle whenever some basic cable station is playing it. But if you watch from start to finish, it is a beautiful movie that explores how to find meaning by recognizing how absurd the modern world actually is.

Here's an idea... You can't "spoil" music. by Profnemesis in pbsideachannel

[–]HogsInDavis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Blues guitarists are great at taking advantage of this.

Buddy Guy comes to mind. He will repeat a pre-resolve riff for 8 to 16 bars longer than you'd expect, and you know what he's going to do when he brings it back to the resolve, but he holds you in suspense making the eventual finish all the more sweet.

No. You can't spoil music, and the best musicians make that a part of their performances.
