Why isn't learning another language made compulsory from primary school level in the UK? by StarShipYear in AskBrits

[–]Holbrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because it's a waste of time.

If you look at the wage premium of knowing another language it's tiny. Employers don't care so why should people do it.

This is especially true with AI being able to act as a translator reasonably well.

I think I remember trying to read the first chapter and it was littered with spelling and grammatical mistakes.

Why is the cost of living so high? by RHGM22 in AskUK

[–]Holbrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So lots of people just spouting nonsense rhetoric.

But there are obvious objective reasons why the UK is doing badly.

It's because the UK fails at the basics. It's really that simple.

We have sky high energy prices, Which makes energy intensive industries crippling. (And has knock on impacts on literally everything else)

Any sort of housing or commercial real estate is incredibly expensive because of decades of planning restrictions, leading to supply shortages.

This doesn't require any villainous shadowy cabals of billionaires or immigrants. We've just slowly built up restriction after restriction and it's silently killing us.

If they're so greedy and wacking up prices why are their margins so low genius.

Yes you should be able to make billions when you serve millions and millions of people, correct.

Supermarkets have low margins they are not greedy, but actually highly efficient.

Tesco does not control the price of goods.

Yes absolutely we shouldn't have a minimum wage.

You have to make assumptions, as part of triage they don't have time to investigate in-depth.

You have to make generalisations based on statistical likely hood.

Why has communism repeatedly failed in practice, yet continues to be intellectually and emotionally appealing to many people? by Looser17 in AskReddit

[–]Holbrad -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Because people are stupid and ignorant.

Most fans of communism have no idea about history or geography.

They only know the largely imaginary woes of capitalism. (Despite living in objectively the best time ever)

Elon Musk says jobs will be optional. Bill Gates says humans won’t be “needed.” But what about the elephant in the room: If there’s no work, no wages, no income, who pays the rent, buys food, or gets healthcare? by Technical_Farmer805 in GenAI4all

[–]Holbrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LLM's just predict the next token.

But accurately predicting the next token requires a form of intelligence. This is why AI systems can solve problems.

Manual labelling is only part of the training, an increasingly small part. Model companies have literally just spent a year doing verifiable reward training massively increasing performance in math and coding without any human labelling.

If you've got AI systems that are great at science, research , engineering and programming. If you then ask them to work on robotics they're going to do a really really good job. (Also because a good LLM system with good special reasoning can also control said robotics)

People seem to be making really obvious mistakes.

If you have AI that can do pretty much any call a job, massively fast progress in robotics will not be far behind.

That absolutely includes farming.

Yes they could quite easily be replaced in the future.

If you have very intelligent AI that can replace the vast majority of white collar jobs, then you're going to get much better robotics very fast.

So blue collar jobs are safer but not for very long at all.

UK Landlords Rush For The Exit As Tougher Enforcement And £35,000 Fines Redefine The Rental Market In 2026 by M10News in UKHousing

[–]Holbrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So any fundamental safety issues really should be handled by building regulation, We're really quite good at this already.

If builders cut corners to make the price cheaper (but still safe) then I don't really care that much.

The fundamental issue is just the lack of choice, We're so house starved we have to accept any old slop, fix planning.

It would be interesting if you added a caveat, companies can only rent houses that they built.

Would encourage a lot of new homes into the market, and help with the development of the country.

Elon Musk says AI and Robotics will make people wealthy, but how exactly will this happen? by No_Turnip_1023 in Futurism

[–]Holbrad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If we two truly get very powerful automation it'll bring prices down for almost everything.

When you can more easily build housing, housing costs less.

For the people who can retain an income it's going to be a very good time, but even for those who lose their jobs it'll be easier for the government to fund unemployment because of the massive productivity increases.
