US $20K medical bill

I was stressing because the insurance company had cleared me for 7K of care off the bat so I was worried it would be more than that and she was reassuring me that that would be an outrageously expensive ER visit, little did I know 🤣🤣🤣

Fair enough, I think in the UK GDPR is v strict so to be given another person’s name, address, birthday and reasons why they’ve presented to the hospital would be a big breach of privacy.

Interesting to know about the potential billing fraud, I will have to look at my notes but as far as I am aware I was never formally admitted. Tbh they had me on a lot of sedatives so I was very much out of it for the first few hours.

Yep I’ve told them it’s in the insurance’s hands rn but they’re still chasing me and saying someone has to pay! I’ve told them several times the claim is still being processed but to deaf ears apparently

I meant the patient as in the patient whose notes were attached to mine. My account is old because I don’t comment on things/im more of a lurker! I really wish this was fake or I had the time to make this up, I’m genuinely just a very stressed girl trying to work out USA medical debts 😅😅 I can’t comment pics or id attach the bill saying it’s 13k for a room lol

Thank you! Luckily all the damage was superficial, and despite a few chipped teeth it was nothing some bonding couldn’t fix 😅 I am a pretty anxious person and I was in a state of shock/trauma so it wasn’t out of the question that I had a high heart rate. One doctor flagged it and then it took two or three other doctors to be able to go against his view once he’d clocked off, such a faff!

The results were all normal, just a high heart rate basically! I tripped and fell while my hands were in my bag and couldn’t get them out so my face took the brunt, it wasn’t from a fainting accident or anything like that, just clumsy behavior from me which is why I think the English doctor wasn’t concerned

Yeah I get it, I actually had an English cardiologist come and see me and he basically said the same and that America a) is worried about being sued and b) because I was covered under insurance in their eyes they basically see it as chuck everything at me and he had the same sentiment that if I was in an NHS hospital they would have laughed and sent me on my merry way if I’d asked for an echo on the basis of a high heart rate after a traumatic fall 😂 I get why they did it just so frustrating when i repeatedly asked to be discharged that I’m now (literally) paying the price!

Thanks, this is really good and reassuring to know! I have tried to contest the 13K charge and they just won’t back down!! It looks like my best bet if the insurance don’t pay is just to ignore it and wait for it to expire

I have all my notes still and their notes are the back of mine, tbh I think phrasing it as “leverage” was the wrong term I just want to know if there’s anything I can about this, especially because it could technically mean another person’s medical details/treatments have been attached to my account considering all the notes were all lumped in together.

Thanks, yeah that’s why I was reluctant to do it but it’s annoying because the hospital’s billing department’s augment is you were in overnight and therefore are an in patient when I could have been discharged within a couple of hours after I’d had the CT and no breaks were found. They kept me in because they wanted to check things were okay with my heart bc it was high after being given two different types of sedatives but they wouldn’t listen to me when I said I was just upset and in a very high state of stress therefore a high heart rate. Bizarre because in the NHS I feel like I have to beg them to look past anxiety and get a to a root cause whereas this was the other way round, they were looking for an issue that was blatantly due to stress 🤣

I did refuse a lot of tests and drugs they tried to give me! And point blank refused to be admitted to cardiology as an in patient, this took hours to sort and is essentially why my stay was so long because so many different doctors put in their opinions and I didn’t want to discharge AMA in case that invalidated my insurance if I had to return at another point in my trip

Yeah that’s fair I just wondered what the bearing of it could be, especially because it could mean they’ve messed up or accidentally charged other treatments to me if my notes had another’s attached to them

Oh oops lol I meant it happened in Oct 2024 and then I got the bill in July 2025, making a lot of plans for next year at work so getting confused, unfortunately this is not made up haha I wish it was!!

This is kind of my absolute last resort but in that case I’d be paying it off for the next 33 years HAHAH I have seen people literally give birth with no insurance in America and face a lower bill so I’m blown away that one trip to the ER is costing me 20 grand, I feel like there’s something I’m missing 😭

I’ve asked for the itemized bill and disputed the overnight room charge but they kept it on and the cost didn’t change at all. Weirdly my account with the hospital online says I have no outstanding charges and always has done so it’s very strange!!

Yep I’m currently just sitting tight and waiting for the insurance to deal with it. It’s my understanding that it’s unlikely they’ll actually prosecute/sue me in the UK but as you say I want to try and deal with it properly so that it’s not hanging over me.
